Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.

Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

To put that into context, Coney Island has a population FOUR times higher than the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.

Even in a generic Category 1, it’s under 10 feet of water. (keep in mind this will be water with pounding surf on top of it, plus another 5 feet of tide.)

I live in California, but grew up in Texas. Hurricanes can change. In my opinion, i’s better to be safe than sorry. The east coast has lots of people that’s why it is getting so much co erase.

I pray that people stay safe.

Considering I grew up in Brooklyn, I think I’m pretty familiar with what Coney Island is and isn’t. And as a former reporter I also have a good idea of what is and isn’t hype, over blown or not.

I find the national news outlets to be overblown as they often have no clue what they are talking about when they are outside of their rarefied bubbles. I prefer local information and do not mind if they “hype” it as they have a vested interest because these type things affect where they and their families live.

I don’t need some blown dry NY or DC type standing up on Chincoteague Island or in Ocean City MD telling me we’re all gonna die. Give me the guy or gal that actually lives in one of the areas being evacuated who actually knows what he or she is talking about when it comes to the area.

Probably because a big tree would need battleship cable and spikes that go 35 feet deep.

LOL--I have a huge oak tree in the back yard with that setup. It came with the house.

An hour later and it is starting to come down harder here in SE CT as well.

Likely +/- 24 hours of rain from here on out.

No sooner read your post and the rain started here in western MA...just as I finished outside. Calm rain so far.

Same here... trees not moving at all. Still too early...

Rainfall Reports from NC:

Wilmington: 6.47” - virtually continuous since Noon on Friday.
Southport: 11.85”

Also: here’s part of an NWS Drought report, dtd 18-Aug-2011.
This is for the New Bern/Morehead City area:

AS OF AUGUST 17TH...NEW BERN NC HAS RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 17.86 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION DURING 2011...WHICH IS 16.04 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL PRECIPITATION OF 33.90 INCHES.

Given the doppler rainfall estimate I just saw... they’re (technically) all caught up now.

It looks like Irene is not turning to the NE as predicted. Unless it starts turning soon it could come right of the Chesapeake Bay. Something like this happened with Ernesto in 2006. Predicted to go 40 miles off shore and came up the Bay instead.

Really? I spoke with my sis in Westfield 2 hrs ago, and the sun was shining, her grandaughter was outside swimming in the pool.

That’s a quick change. Are you south of Westfield?

Prayers for all .. scary night ahead for millions tonight, I fear.
