Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Yes, it still burning and we’ve been having problems with the smoke as well.
They estimate that spots of it it are burning more than a foot deep in the peat.
TWC is covering this pretty good. They are looking at a 72hr event. Lots of local coverage and expert analysis.
This storm is big as the outer bands are pushing all the way to the Smokies.
yes, i guess there are people living in the things .. nevermind .. some attempts are better than others
stay safe
Where is Jim Cantore?
Eye-opening precip map. Wowser! Thanks for posting it.
Battery Park
Last I heard, lower Manhattan.
Where I fear for Manhattan is the wind. If this storm stays together and pushes 100MPH gusts downtown, that will be funnel hell.
People live in tall buildings, too.
Bleach can evaporate from a closed container with no air in it?
sheeeez...
QPF values are very high. 10-12. If the storm tracks west of the city, LI sound will have a major surge. If it tracks over the city the wind and debris will reek havoc on the skyscrapers and high-rises.
Nope. It's wobbling, and also pretty much all the guidance has it turning back to the left.
This has as much chance of not making landfall in the US as I do of becoming Director of the Institute for Creation Research.
Experts say, eh?
Remember that a QPF 14 was met in Nashville, May 2010, and TN has a propensity for rain.
Last I heard my friend is still going with her daughter. they were to fly out from Jax tomorrow—Sat- into NYC.
I didn’t call tonight cause I just couldn’t hear about it if they were still going. It would just make me angry.
I will call them in the morning and stay on the phone long enough to ask if they are going and then get off the phone before I say something to end our friendship..ha. the broadway shows are cancelled I heard, so maybe they will stay home.
I just think its not only risky and stupid, but more so, as one of the news people said...selfish.
LIVE streaming video of pier at Topsail Island (?) http://www.surfchex.com/index.php It is kind of dramatic in the darkness.
Landfall may be limited to the Outer Banks. There is a HP in the Mid-Atlantic arguing with the storm right now. Landfall should occur at LI.
