Forward speed is somewhat low for latitude

I've been expecting it to speed up and turn East (that is, track NE or even ENE), especially with the weakening - but maybe it's just so big that getting it locked into steering is taking longer than usual.

Some distant thunder in NH around 2145, with a very fine mist turning to light rain. Winds still calm.

2 million Virginians without power; surge prompts flooding concerns

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/2011/aug/27/2-million-virginians-without-power-surge-prompts-f-ar-1268886/

This hurricane has managed to coincide with a very high tide and so there’s more chance for flooding.

I know they do .. rain or shine, snow, storm.
God bless them. They are truly most loyal, most
incredibly serious about this high honor. They
honor the great, must possess great virtue and
honor themselves, as well as utmost vigilence to
duty.

Tomb Guards Stand Sentinel Through Isabel’s Threatening Sweep

The Sentinel’s Creed

My dedication to this sacred duty
is total and whole-hearted.
In the responsibility bestowed on me
never will I falter.
And with dignity and perseverance
my standard will remain perfection.
Through the years of diligence and praise
and the discomfort of the elements,
I will walk my tour in humble reverence
to the best of my ability.
It is he who commands the respect I protect,
his bravery that made us so proud.
Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
this soldier will in honored glory rest
under my eternal vigilance.

Over 80% of the soldiers who tryout for this duty do not make it. Each soldier must have strong military bearing, discipline, stamina and present an outstanding soldierly appearance. Each Sentinel must be able to flawlessly perform seven different types of walks, honors and ceremonies.

They must retain vast amounts of knowledge concerning the Tomb, Arlington National Cemetery, the United States Army and their unit.

I usually have a more adult sense of humor, but I really think it would be very symbolic if a brave New Yorker would moon Geraldo like they did the Weather Channel guy today.

LOL!

Is the Federal NOAA trying to grab all sensor and model data and shutdown all independent forecasting? Or intimidation that makes them play ball or else?

Like FEMA and HS are pushing down into all levels of local emergency management?

If I could find a cab, I'd zip over there and give him a smack. I want to turn on Fox but dread hearing about how the hurricane is affecting HIM. At least Sheppie had me laughing.

“What was your duration of winds >50 kt?”

None. There were gusts to 45kts only. High water is the big issue in Deltaville. Right now it is 3 feet above normal. I know. Big deal! But our tide is about 1.6 feet rise and fall.

Why do they have Geraldo out there? Do they want people to cheer for the hurricane?

City Island is one of my favorite places in NYC, and so few people know about it. Life is nice on the hidden jewels of Long Island Sound.. but tomorrow may be the exception. I’m considering sending my wife and kids over to her parents’ in Bayside. At least Gloria was considerate enough to hit at low tide. Good luck the next few days!

And don’t forget Sean Penn bailing water out of his sinking canoe with a paper cup..he had gone to help out in Katrina and forgot to put the plug in the bottom of his canoe!

Hilarious!

> but something else about its characteristics is keeping the wind speeds from being more typical of a 950 mb storm ... normally a solid Cat 3.

Perhaps its the millions of prayers being lifted up.

Just lost power outside of Annapolis, MD. Generator running, keeping powered up the well (Yay! We have water!), the sump pump, the fridge, the freezer, and the room with all the computers, FIOS and e-mail server. We have enough juice left over for the coffee maker, the microwave, and the electric frying pan/griddle-thingy.

Next week, it’ll get installed to the first floor heat pump, and then we’ll have a/c in hot weather and heat in cold.

Some of the nonsense on this thread is really getting to me, especially the crapola coming from people no where in any of the affected regions. I know what is going on outside my front door and don’t need some yahoo no where need the area telling me I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I totally, totally agree. Geez, at the very least these people could simply offer prayers for FReepers and their families in the affected areas.

I remember following some of these hurricane threads and also a live thread about horrible tornadoes in Oklahoma a few years ago. At the very least, I offered my prayers...

We’re all getting lots of rain. There have not been the wide spread power outages on the shore the way there has been in Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

The eye is about opposite Cape Charles now and the wind and rin is picking up.

Before the Wallops Flight Center rain guage quit reading properly there had been 11.5 inches of rain and that ws the last reading at 5:30 pm.

Eye is supposed to be in line with me sometime after 11pm. I’m going to stay on as long as I can, but I have been having issues with my connection, so who knows how long that will be.

No, not at all...just a steady rain but nothing dramatic. Friends are posting on FB and everyone is just waiting.
