Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Lot of power flickers, but still have power for now. Thought we lost the big screen tv but after a power strip reset, it lives. Have seen quite a few vivid blue-green flashes of nearby transformers going POOF. Last update from NAS Patuxent River at 9:08 had winds of 31mph gusting to 58mph.
Transplanted from Wisconsin. Now in Barnegat. I still have those fears of summer storms.
Most succinct and important statement ever!
Thank you.
We need to all have bumper stickers & T-shirts, etc..
I know everyone thinks it, but the more it's repeated the better off we may be, who knows.
One thing I do know, this passive acceptance of inept leadership isn't working and I'm tired of , being led by NINCOMPOOPS!!!
I should have added: If you're in the Fenway neighborhood right now... See the current Red Sox-A's game for FREE - Enter at Gate C
We have not heard any more about that either.
There is a facebook page up that is putting out some good in;
ESVA Hurricane Irene Online Base
There is a gal there from ANEC and is posting info, including flooding reports from the crews and a bit earlier she commented that there is 4 feet of water at Inlet View.
Hi FRiend! So — are the Sox winning? My second fav team!
I usually have my glass of Resveratrol just before I go to bed, but tonight I’m thinking of being on storm watch so might make it a double TOMORROW night!
Shirts are good....BILLBOARDS are better!!!!!!!
Yes, it is big. I have been watching the local radar and there have been some bands with some strong stuff coming through now and then.
Was watching Shep ‘til my daughter confiscated the remote-she’s had enough of the coverage- and made me watch a great movie. Been away for two hours.
Was struck by the sight of Broadway, empty of traffic.
Storms in the Northeast normally travel 20-30 mph after being picked up by the westerlies. Irene’s forward speed forecast is somewhat slow for its latitude.
SciFi series on BBC, one of my favorite.
“I usually have my glass of Resveratrol just before I go to bed, “
LMAO! Im gonna steal that line....if folks think I am on medication, they will leave me the hell alone...If the know it is merely red wine, they will right away ask if they can have some!! ;-)
I believe “ Food and Wine “ did an article on Wisconsin wines a few months back . I wasn’t even aware they had wineries , much less good ones .
A blueberry wine? Mmmm.... sounds good!
Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and prayers, girlfriend. :-)
(he ain’t MY leader...)
This is certainly true - Joe Bastardi (for one) has been beside himself all day tweeting about the incongruity of it all. Now the buoys and weather stations haven't reported anything beyond about 78mph on the winds - but those are static data grabs - not the maximums.
Nonetheless, the highest wind gust of any kind I've actually heard has been 115 mph...and nothing sustained near that. My own amateurish best guess here is that the sheer size of the storm is being held together by that low pressure, but something else about its characteristics is keeping the wind speeds from being more typical of a 950 mb storm ... normally a solid Cat 3.
thanks ...Freepers Rule!
My friends who are lurking on Freep for the first time are soooo impressed!!!
Stay safe. our thoughts and prayers are with you up there!
