I also have a couple extra shortwave portables. No problem, keep the best one at home, the others in truck, shed, etc.
We were actually driving back to Texas from Ms. during the Katrina evacuation and saw all of the trucks headed that way. I was in tears because living in Ms. through hurricanes all of my life, I knew that Katrina was going to be a bad one. There were fema trucks and electrical trucks all up and down Hwy.49 that day and throngs of folks headed north like us.

A dose of reality for those who subestimate a minimal hurricane.
Irene turned into a hurricane as it was passing through the San Juan Metro area, so it was a minimal hurricane when it went over.
Bear in mind, in Puerto Rico most people’s homes are built like concrete bunkers and we have a lot of experience with hurricanes.
Damage that I saw first hand - again - as a minimal hurricane:
1. Glass windows in condos unhinged or simply blown off by the pressure differential.
2. Large tree branches (more than 5’ thick) snapped like twigs, many trees down.
3. Horrific sounding wind blowing all kinds of debris around, especially along the high rises of midtown San Juan.
4. An overturned car.
5. Downed lampposts.
6. Severe urban flooding (just from the rain - no storm surge in San Juan).
7. A pipe-and-canvas car shelter blown away, which landed half a block away on top of a house.
8. An air conditioner unit that shifted position along the roof because it was pushed by the wind.
9. Although most people got their electricity back within 24 hours, many are still without power nearly a week later.
10. Scarce ice for four days.
11. I lost over $100.00 worth of groceries in just two days.
12. One and a half days of lost productivity at work.
Just to keep things under perspective.
WJZ - Baltimore,MD reports that Cecil County, Harford County may experience 40-60 mph over night with 75 mph gusts. 3 - 5 inches of rain. Oh boy.
LOL!!! I love the guy that was just on tv standing on the beach in NY awaiting this devastating dying storm and not a hair on his head was moving. I guess they forgot about the Nor’easters they have up there with stronger winds than this storm. I guess rain is scarier than snow. Media is off the charts crazy with this one. I’ve never seen them like this before, not even with Katrina.

Where are they getting this information? Pulling it out of their arses? I’m checking all the cities on WU and the weather stations in those areas, the wind is next to nothing. We have gusts as big as that in a bad thunderstorm or when a cold front passes in the winters. Sheesh.
Well, then don’t check WU, you can check weather stations owned by people in those towns that are updating every 5 seconds to WU. Just enter the city name, click on weather stations and check them. If 10 people have weather stations in that city and all of them say peak gust was 45 MPH I think you can safely assume that is correct. I have a weather station and so does my neighbor. It uploads to WU every few seconds.

A little different imho. Katrina was a Cat 5 storm churning in the gulf for days and nowhere for the water to go but into the gulf. This storm hasn’t been above a Cat 2 since it came on the radar in the US. It also is not in a total bowl like the gulf. We also have an incompetent POTUS trying to make it all about himself now.

BINGO!!!! He came home from vacation early hoping to increase his dreadful poll numbers, because the SS could not do their job if the storm intensified and hit there and also because now it will give him an excuse to take another vacation because Irene ruined the end of this one. Oh and how long before big MO will look at the camera again? Stop hiding wookie, we all know you had more plastic surgery when you were MIA for 3 weeks in July and August.
