Suicide Bomber Attacks U.N. Building in Nigeria (at least 18 dead)

ABUJA, Nigeria — A suicide bomber driving a vehicle packed with explosives rammed the United Nations headquarters in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Friday, blasting an enormous hole in the building with a thunderous explosion, witnesses and officials said. As many as 400 people may have been inside at the time of the attack, the first time United Nations offices have been a bombing target in Nigeria.

Boko Haram, a shadowy Nigerian Islamist insurgency group with possible links to Al Qaeda’s affiliates in the region, claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to the BBC’s Hausa language broadcast service in northern Nigeria.

An aide to President Goodluck Jonathan confirmed at least 18 dead and United Nations officials said the total number of dead and wounded was likely to rise considerably. Abuja hospitals issued a call for blood donors as the police and fire and rescue squads sealed off the area and pulled survivors and bodies from the wreckage, which destroyed at least two floors of the seven-story structure.

I’m not sure why, but for some reason this reminds me of an old joke about a busload of lawyers going over a cliff...

...the punch line is: “A good start”.

“Nigeria : We bombed UN building –Boko Haram”
Posted by Admin on 2011/8/26 14:35:33

From ISMAIL OMIPIDAN, Kaduna

Saturday, August 27, 2011

SNIPPET: “Militant Islamic group, otherwise known as Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for yesterday’s Abuja bomb blast. Commenting after the blasts, which rocked United States building in Abuja, one Sheik Azzawahiri, who had been disowned by the group as unknown to it, said that the group struck because the Federal Government was not showing any sincerity in holding talks with it.

Azzawahiri, who claims to be speaking on behalf of the group...”

SNIPPET: “Meanwhile, nothing has been heard from Boko Haram authentic spokesman, Abu Zaid.”

In an interview with a Times reporter in northern Nigeria last year, one of the group’s leaders said the group wanted to shift its focus from domestic targets.

“The U.S. is the major target because it’s the major aggressor against Muslims throughout the world,” said the militant, who gave his name only as Musa. “America is the main aggressor, and I believe all these attacks against America are divine worship.

“They are fighting Islam and we will also fight them, if we get the chance,” he said.
