After living through Ike and the aftermath, it seems to be a little strange how much we, on the Texas coast, are hoping for a storm.

I just had to go braggin’ we haven’t had a storm in the Tampa Bay area since 1921. I’m a hurricane nut and picked the Bay Area because I love the Gulf and Pinellas/Hillsboro has about a 1% chance of a direct hit. Mother Nature doesn’t really care about statistics, however.

Oh boy now I can watch the weather the next couple of days and hear the readers mispronounce the Leeward Islands.

I think
Irene could be potentially
VERY frightening for southern Florida, especially if the track heads straight towards the city of Miami itself.
Even if you don't get a Category 2 or 3 hurricane, the combination of circa 90-100 mph winds plus the storm surge could heavily damage the very expensive South Beach area of Miami Beach, FL, which could effectively wipe out much of the tourist industry of that city (South Beach is by far the #1 tourist spot in the Miami area).

As bad as we need the rain, contrary to some people’s opinion, we don’t need a hurricane.

Tampa Bay area HAM operator here, and the airwaves have been quite chatty about this one.
There’s some model divergence across the different predictors, but it seems that this one bears watching.
Anyone have a good hurricane prep checklist? Mine’s almost 15 years old, and I’ve scratched out, added, whited out, highlighted, asterisked, and erased almost everything on the paper.

I’m flying into Orlando for a Convention on Tuesday and leaving Satruday morning... I guess I should bring a raincoat? I’m coming from Colorado and have never experienced a tropical storm or huricane. I guess it should be an exciting week.....:)
