Tropical Storm Irene has developed from Invest 97 in the Western Atlantic Ocean, east of the Leeward Islands.
Buoy Data:
Caribbean Sea
Florida
LOL - for a second there, as I was reading the second article, I thought that one of the Top 5 Dangers was ‘Like us on Facebook’.
Mom used to take us to Mobile every other summer or so and I will never forget the destruction all the way across. This was before Interstates and we pretty much drove the coastline.
Old colonial style houses that had been there forever, were gone.
Used to have family, or claimed family, almost every 50 miles from Corpus Christi to Pensacola. If a storm came into the Gulf, it was going to get someone. May still, just haven’t kept track.
Whoop...As soon as I hit post I thought of that.
Sorry folks...
Cape May County.
The last big hurricanes we had in our area...(central Florida) was 7 whole years ago....and we had 4 in a matter of a few weeks....
..there were blue tarps on homes (from all the roof damage) in our county for over a year!!....
..we evacuated twice....rode out the other two.
Right now.....as we are about 8 to 10 miles from the ocean....(as a crow flies)....we're getting some moderately heavy wind and rain.....actually it's been fairly windy all day...
..my husband & I took an early morning walk (82 degrees but a nice wind)
Watching all this gives us cautious prep & heads up... in case of next time....
..hurricane season is not over!
Indeed they do!
We were in Florida in 1979 for Hurricane David....only a minimal Cat1 but it stalled just off our coast for a couple or more days....and spawned tornadoes.
We stayed put in our home
....but the howling, incessant winds....the telephone wires snapping, the driving rain.....were really scary......
Water poured through the sides of our doors and and our front bay window....I'm only talking about a Cat1...and we moved mattresses to the inside hallway where I stayed with the baby as my husband mopped up the water...
..two blocks away a tornado ripped part of a roof off a large supermarket.
Category 1 is not harmless!
Just wanted to mention (small thing compared to whats going to happen up the coast) but causing power outages in our area (Delray Beach FL) just from the slight brush we are getting. We didn’t have any outages, but they are reporting them already. Lots of rain and wind this afternoon, gusts up to 45 MPH (they said)—looked pretty bad out there, altho I was watching from inside the house.
There have been many bigger ones.
Isabel (2003), for example.
We have had rain and wind all day, and some parts of town have lost power, but we have not. It has that feeder band feel. As much as my prayers are with people are in the path, I’m very relieved we are not. Our first 2 years here convinced me hurricanes were not that much fun.
Yikes that sounds like a nightmare, a stalled hurricane (no matter the cat).
The latest track has me on the eastern (heavy wind) side of Irene on Sunday afternoon here in CT.
I love this old hymn.
damn, dunno how i managed that .. html error, runners advance .. lol
That year of all those storms in Florida was insane!
This could get real ugly in PA and NJ - it's been a long time since we had a big blow (Isabel in 2003 I think is the last one) and there are a lot of big trees with roots in saturated soil just waiting to come down on power lines, roads, cars and houses. I'm heading out to the far NW suburbs for this one.
I'm afraid you're right Fatima. I'm looking out the window at the shed/workshop my husband is in the middle of building, I have a feeling I won't be looking ata it in the same condition come Monday.
Yeah, but I sure wish it wasn't because of this woman........
I think you should get the family picture, the insurance policies and bank books and then book a long weekend in Vegas.
