Went ahead and moved this thread into Front Page as well as Extended. When you post your next thread, mash Abuse and we’ll lock this one - and go ahead and post that one into both Breaking and Frontpage. This is a historic storm and very bad.

For the Jersey Shore, the most devastating effect would be the surge. A track right on the shore means much of the circulation stays over water, which keeps up the strenght of the storm and also allows greater surge to develop - and a track right up the coast means every shore town gets surge.
And that also plows surge into NYC and Long Island.

My elderly parents live on the south shore of Long Island as well. I’ve been trying to get ahold of them to convince them to come up here to VT for the weekend at least (they’re still in decent shape at 78 and 74 and live in the home I grew up in). My bet is that they won’t go.
My sister talked to my dad yesterday and he said he’s “well prepped for the hurricane as he has a fresh stock of bourbon and pipe tobacco.”. Argh.

Particularly disturbing info about the highest tides of the year occurring during the same time.Know a homeowner in Marion, MA ... large estate on the water with little elevation. Worst case scenario high tide as hurricane hits pushing storm surge up Buzzards Bay (Marion MA is close by the western end of the Cape Cod canal). The surge will be amplified as water backs up ... the canal will provide a partial outlet but not enough to prevent abnormally high water along that portion of Buzzards Bay.

Just checked the track on the
Satellite Loop - the eye is about to hit the Eastern-most edge of Grand Bahama Island. That's essentially on-track with the latest official projection - certainly no further west at this point, anyway. That points Irene right at the Cape Lookout lighthouse.

When the Admin Monitor says that about a storm, we know it is potentially serious. I’m warning friends to make plans to get out now. Thankfully, I built up some good will with my network of friends by talking one family out of the path of Katrina - they had planned to ride her out. The house was rebuilt finally last year. Our discussions do help save lives. I could point them to the data to help convince them.

I imagine it is like an insane asylum. I have no need for anything from the store, with the exception of beer, which my husband should be picking up on his way home from work.

Problem is the east coast (especially NJ) has not had a serious hurricane since the early 60's.
There will be idiots who will want to be riding their surf boards.
Too many folks don;t have respect for what nature can do.
