Agreed. Hurricanes are unpredictable. Mr. T shopped for non-perishables this morning on his way to work. If Irene hits hard a large swath of the east coast, we could be without power for a week or more. We're planning ahead, with propane for the Coleman stove, bread, water, canned goods, and so on.
Yep - speaking of track, though: the 8am advisory is a little odd: 25.5N and 76.5W.
Note the 5am report: 24.6N 76.2W.
And now the 2am fix: 24.2N 76.0W
Did Irene suddenly “jump” 0.9 degrees to the north?
I don’t think so (for one thing, it couldn’t suddenly double its forward speed): I believe that’s a bad plot report based on the eye being scrambled a little over Eleuthera Island.
I just added a phone ap by KittyCode called Hurricane. it was an iTunes 2.99. I checked the free ones & not too impressed
Love all these maps thank you.
Boo/ghost
aha..you all just dont know the extreme joy of tofu like we vegetarians... /extreme S
I recall well the pork.. that is what I think I missed the most. Filet also & the scallops/lobster/shrimp
thanks miss NN for all your work here.
smooch!
I don't do tofu, but I use low sodium soy sauce. omg--don't know how I would survive if clams, shrimp, oysters and scallops weren't available. We've got a local guy farming clams--they are positively yummy. Of course, it it helps to live in a coastal community.
{{{hugs!}}}
I believe that you are correct. The eyewall reformation last night was indeed a very choppy affair! Once she gets out over open waters by about 1-2AM Friday we should begin to get a clearer picture on all counts.
...(GRIN) I'll skip past that. My point: Here in Norfolk VA, traffic is always a nightmare going west on 64, triple on weekends. There are several other ways out, probably as bad. For those in this location, if your planning to evacuate, consider this...
... Good Luck to all of yer...
I have some excellent wild turkey hunting on my farm. Perhaps we could work up a new turkey hunting method where you cast out a baited hook from a camouflaged blind. You then lure the turkey in with your call as usual and when he takes the bait you set the hook and reel him in. I bet an 18-20 lb turkey would put up a good fight on medium tackle!
Combine this with my spear fishing/bow fishing idea for your son's aerial jet-pack/jet ski rig and we've got the makings of a new TV show. We could call it "Extreme Angling"... /g
LOL!
Well, if I was going to give the NE a hurricane enema NY would be the correct place to stick the tube.
We woke to rain and some breezy wind. I assume it is some outer bands brushing by the coast of S. FL. I had to move my big umbrella into the patio. Prayers for NC and northerly areas. She looked very BIG and BAD on tv this morning.
Joe Bastardi - Forecasts Irene to be a Top Mid-Atlantic Hurricane
Puts in in the same class as Hazel and the Hurricane of 1821.
I always appreciate all the work you do during hurricane season! Thank you so much for keeping us updated.
We’re going to New Bern over labor day .. FIL has his sailboat near Morehead and a good friend of the family has a place down there .. we’re watching with baited breath!
Oh, I noticed you were talking about food. I made up the most wonderful mango sherbet recipe recently. I think even a vegetarian could eat it, because the only ingredients were mango, honey (ok, some don’t use honey, I guess you could substitute agave nectar altho I didn’t try that) and coconut milk. I guess not hurricane food because you need an ice cream maker, but oooo man. Sorry. (if you want the recipe send me a message). :)
I can only imagine that any attempted evacuation of Norfolk/Virginia Beach would be borderline impossible, even if they use contraflow on the highways. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Funnel is enough of a joke during normal summer weekends and I can’t see the roads heading west out of Chesapeake and Suffolk being much better. If they shift that forecast track any more west, it sure looks like Tidewater is going to get raked.

From sunny California- I’m thinking of all you east coasters, and saying a little prayer. I just want all of you to know that before this thread gets seriously busy...
...A year ago I was in Lexington KY. Kind of wishing I was still there...
At 11 AM today they will decide if they are going to evacuate Ocean City N.J.
North Carolina's Dare County ordered all visitors to leave as of 8 a.m. Thursday to get out of the way of Hurricane Irene.
Evacuation was mandatory for all nonresidents, county officials said in a statement, and residents should prepare for a monster storm. The county includes the vulnerable Outer Banks, where Irene could make landfall.
"Although the mandatory evacuation order is for all Dare County visitors, residents are advised to take proper precautions and make general storm preparations," the statement said.
Officials in Carteret County are meeting today, deciding whether to issue evacuation orders. The decisions are expected today, in order to give people in those counties enough time to evacuate before the first major effects of Hurricane Irene begin to impact Eastern Carolina. They try to give a considerable amount of time during the daylight to escape any threats of an approaching storm.
Officials say they consider the track of the storm, expected impacts, along with hurricane watches and warnings when determining whether to evacuate an area.
Mandatory evacuations have been issued for Ocracoke Island in Hyde County and Dare County.
