Gov. Rick Perry talks like George W. Bush but might win like Ronald Reagan.
Last weekends Ames straw poll made for great political theater, but the important action was taking place in South Carolina and New Hampshire, where Texas Gov. Rick Perry kicked off his presidential campaign.
Perry, the straight-talking three-term governor, is bringing to the race a message and biography that couldnt contrast any more starkly with President Obamas.
He grew up in rural Paint Creek, Texas, farming cotton in his early years, and attending the states land-grant university, Texas A&M. Obama went to Harvard Law School, earned his political chops in Chicago, spending much of his early career in academia. Perry has governed a low-tax, low-regulation state at a time when the president has sought to expand governments role in the economy. The Texas governor's blunt advocacy of conservatism and faith-tinged rhetoric couldnt be any different from Obamas nuanced rhetoric and cautious governing style.

Well, considering that the person who goes on to win the Ames straw poll and Iowa caucuses rarely wins the nomination, I'm not sure your point has any significance. I think the author is going by Perry's position in the polls before entering the race (he was running behind Romney and in front of all of the others), and assuming that being in the race and actively campaigning will poush him into the top spot. Based on the reception he seems to have received over the weekend, that appears to be a good assumption, but we can wait to see the next round of polls to see how his entry has affected the state of the race.
>> When you assess the integrity of a politician, what really matters in the end is how good they are at keeping promises <<
Nobody can disagree with such a noble sentiment.
But that’s NOT the definition of a conservative. Otherwise, we’d have to say Obama is a man of integrity and he’s also a conservative because as promised, he delivered on his “healthcare” plan.
If the conservatives were not splitting their votes, cross-overs would be less consequential.
Conservative Michele Bachmann is more like Ronald Reagan than socialist Perry.
These RINOs just keep playing right out of the left liberal playbook...keep repeating a lie often enough and soon people may believe it is true. Assumes the conservatives are really that easily duped.
Bull!
If you're looking for perfect, he died on June 5, 2004.
Perry is the better alternate between the three frontrunners.
Between Bachmann looking robotic and sounding produced and Romney's Massachusetts baggage (not to mention the DNC’s ringing endorsement of Romney along with his coronation as the GOP nominee by the MSM over a year in advance), Perry is, without a doubt, the realistic and best choice in the field.
Axelrod and the dims aren't NEARLY as prepared for him as they are Romney and does anyone on this forum HONESTLY believe that Obama wouldn't absolutely shred Bachmann in a televised debate?
Think with your head, folks.
Oh yeah, and consider this:
Air Force Pilot v. Pot Smoking Hallway Sitting “Stand up Philosopher”
Deep in the Heart of Texas v. Deep in the Heart of the Congo
Chief Executive v. Community Organizer
Taking a Stand v. Voting “Present”
RLTW.
I give him a lot of credit for that.
Yet, Jimmy Carter was also a Naval Submarine Officer. Go figure...
Poppycock the likes of, “The Maverick for Change McCain” or “Compassionate Conservatism”.
The MSM has tried hard to lift Romney up as their GOP golden child, but conservatives have tamped down these efforts.
A lil worrisome that they've jumped in with both feet in regards to Perry. Let's get through the GOP debates before deciding Perry's the GOP messiah.
Hey I’m from Ma. I’ll vote for Perry if he gets the nomination. But I’ll tell ya what.If this guy starts with the God told me so schtick or uses the word prayer when God told him to send 100,000 teenagers to an almost, kinda, maybe war,God might tell me and millions of others not to vote period....People are sick and tired of listening to some Elmer Gantry type with a Texas twang pray for the wrong decisions.
I like Bachmann, and what I've seen of Perry, I like him, too. What in his record qualifies him to be described as a "socialist"? I haven't seen it yet.
I don’t think Rick has won yet. You would think Bachmann didn’t even win the straw poll. Its 15 mos til the election. I want to see who starts winning primaries. No matter what BHO has got to go.
That's the plan.
It is an issue. Right now it looks like the race is between Bachmann, Perry and Romney. I don't know a whole lot about Perry yet, but what I do is pretty good. It seems that we do ourselves a disservice by being overly zealous for any one candidate at this point. If the candidate we like doesn't do well there is a tendency to want to walk away and too much is at stake this time around.
I will go to the polls for any candidate that wins the nomination as long as they are Pro-life.
Excellent post!
I voted for VP Palin last time, there is nothing that will get me to vote for Mutt freaking Romney or Huntsman, nothing!
I would vote for any of the others. If a gun-grabbing bastard gets elected will be without my vote.
I think it has more to do with "timing" than anything. A lot of Freepers have been in the trenches with Palin, Bachmann, etc, even helping campaign on the grass roots level and higher. They're vested in a particular candidate other than Perry and only 1-2 months ago, nobody had heard of Perry.
Its only normal they feel this way when a relative unknown comes out of the woodwork and is already battling for #1.
Enough of testing the water ! She is playing this nonsense to be in public eyes and get some speaking gig and make money! I am all for making money but for god sake, just say, whether she is in or out ! People like you will start moving towards other candidates and we can sort out this field as soon as possible ! I don’t want us to drag this to june or july of 2012 !
