"Perry is surging at Intrade, where people put their money where their mouth is."

The Market lost 2000 points in 2 weeks where people put their money where their brains are.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t sound just like GWB (and have all the same mannerisms). That is what people across the country will hear (and see).

When I listened to him, I didn't hear W--I heard Ronald Reagan. BTW, I am not a Texan, can I still vote for this man?

thanks for the website link. Google throws up (literally) a bunch of anti-Perry stuff upon a search, including HuffPo hit pieces and links to anti-Perry sites. Wow, are they scared of him. Makes me really want to donate to his campaign! Perry/Bachmann or Perry/Palin!

“Yep.....but it won’t work.”

I understand. Just sayin’ that it’ll be the standard line of attack. There’s going to be a lot of “do we really need another Texas Governor, now?”

Will be interesting to watch.

I'd love to see Perry debate Obama. I bet he could make Obama cry!

The first problem with your scenario is it assumes that Romney's unethical and dubious gamesmanship would somehow be discounted by the truly principled Michele Bachmann. Bachmann will never team up with the likes of atheistic socialist Romney.

Riiiight.

You seem like a well intentioned person, so rather than a argue this point by point, I'll just give you a general angle to consider.

Your reply, including this paragraph, is very principled and very naiive. Our system of government, from the very first day, was designed to promote the lesser of two evils. You get as much as you can take, unless you get too greedy, and then you get nothing. There's a great quote in my profile by Ronald Reagan on just this point.

Michelle Bachmann is a junior congresswoman with solid philosophical credentials and no real accomplishments. She knows perfectly well that she has no chance of being President. She's running for vice president, in a race where Romney is the presumed front runner. She's taken no real swipes at him, only at the others running for Vice President. In fact, she's precisely designed like Palin was for McCain; a conservative booster shot for a sagging RINO.

This is just how the world works. You can hope and pray against it, but, like your entire post, it's not political analysis, it's heart felt projection.

>> “Bachmann and Romney are going to team up. Bachmann isn’t top ticket material, but she’s a tough conservative attack dog. Romney has money and presidential bearing for days, but no actual credentials. They need each other, with political symmetry that no other candidates have.” <<

.
You like to use words, but do you know what they mean?

If Bachmann and Romney have “political symmetry” then she’s certainly no “conservative attack dog.”

I agree that Bachmann isn’t top ticket material, but for that reason, she isn’t VP material either. This doesn’t mean that she is dog meat either though; I think that she can be useful in congress if she stabilizes.

We have only one “top ticket” candidate available to us at this time, and that is Palin. Filling her VP slot is going to be difficult, and I pray that she isn’t forced into accepting Perry. It would be as dreadful as when Reagan had to accept Bush. Perry and Bush I are similar in some very frightening ways, and the Gardasil incident is just the tip of that iceberg.

Frankly I don’t believe the CAIR guy. Just exactly where are these so-called Conservative Muslims. I have yet to see one. Maybe he should name them. Oh yeah can’t do that, they would be dead by the next day.

Taqiyya at work on this one.

To: plain talk
Dear Plain Talk:

Texas has a BBA. Our budget forecasts two years out, because the legislature only meets every other year.

Now, understanding that, we are not allowed to accumulate debt except for the following: (1) by a referendum vote of the citizens, (2) natural disasters or emergencies, or (3) self-sustaining bonds.

What are self-sustaining bonds? These are bonds where the tab is not picked up by the taxpayer, but by those who will benefit from whatever the bond creates. Bonds to fund college grants and student loans will be paid for by the students. Bonds to build a cancer center will be paid off by those who use the center. Bonds to create new parks will be paid for by user fees.

How much of the current "debt" is self-sustaining? Roughly 90%. That is what some of these clowns running around screaming about "Perry doubled the size of Texas' debt" DON'T UNDERSTAND. Only 10% of the debt comes from non-sustaining expenses (meaning the money is recouped by some other means than on the back of the taxpayers).

And yes, they have cut general revenue spending. In Texas, the lion's share of the State budget goes for education. We had a short-fall in taxes and revenues, so they cut the budget. Each district had to come up with millions in cuts, unless the voters approve to raise their share of local school taxes to offset this shortfall. Each district has control over it's own destiny, by choosing to pay more if they want, or doing without if they don't.

Unlike the FedGov, which allows programs to continue in perpetuity, Texas has a Sunset Commission which examines each area to see if it has outlived it's useful purpose. The Sunset Commission regularly reviews, makes suggestions, and either continues or discontinues government programs and departments. I know; I've been called by them for input.

Perry did cut taxes towards the middle of his term. We projected budget surpluses, and had a substantial "Rainy Day Fund", so they mandated that school districts slash their tax rate. Ours dropped by half a dollar per thousand in value.

In the meantime, we had 5 million people move here, Katrina refugees, several natural disasters, a combative President who refused to help secure the border and is punishing our oil and gas companies for being successful, a housing market crash, and more. But Forbes, in 2008, calculated our total debt as 1.2% of Texas' State GDP (not including local government debt).

We also have something Obama does not, a AAA rating without the benefit of an Uncle Ben Funny Money Printing press. We have to EARN it.

There are lots of things to bash Perry about, but financial management, since most of the spending is generated in the State House, is not one of them.

To: GRRRRR
Dear GRRRR:

You do realize that Debbie is quoting a retread article from Salon, right?

What has Perry done? Oh, that's right. He signed HB 470 in 2003 that called for truth in advertising and allowed for a penalty against those who label food as Halal when it isn't Halal. Similar laws for Kosher foods have been on the books for years.

In the last year or two, he signed a cooperation agreement to raise awareness in the Muslim community of the need for partnering with the State, particularly during times of natural disasters (of which we have many) and to review the impact of Muslims in America. Shocking stuff, I tell ya!

Seriously, I wish we would go back to the good old days when folks actually dug and researched, drew informed conclusions, instead of relying on retreads from bloggers.

There is plenty of actual, factual things to be concerned about - but the Perry aligning with Terrorists is nonsense. FTR, I am NOT in the Perry camp!

It is a monumental waste of money and entirely redundant to the State. Heck, each district even has their own redundant cirriculum coordinators at a hefty price for each subject. They can be streamlined, too.

Honestly, the only useful purpose it could serve is administering the National Teacher's Exam and data collections for trending. This could easily be handled by a not-for-profit organization that would be more efficient and self-sustaining with user funds instead of tax dollars (like the American Bar Association).

But since that makes sense, Washington won't do it.

1. Your instincts are right. You shouldn’t believe the CAIR guy. If Islam were a religion of peace and tolerance I wouldn’t be here. The PC liberal police don’t get it or don’t care.

2. Liberals and secular progressives are salivating, waiting to paint Perry as a religious fundamentalist. He should keep it on the QT.

Much like in the USSR and China there is no room for a God. The STATE is God. There is no room for competition.

As some Congresscritter once said (don’t remember who)..

“Christianity is a religion where God sent His son to die for us. Islam is a religion where people send their son to die for God.”

I like Perry so far.
