Speaker Boehner Announces Appointments to Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction
Washington (Aug 10)
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced his intent to appoint the following three lawmakers to represent House Republicans on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:
House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)
House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI)
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI)
Speaker Boehner has tapped Chairman Hensarling to serve as a co-chair of the joint select committee. Boehner issued the following statement regarding the appointments of Chairmen Hensarling, Camp, and Upton:
Our debt and deficits are a threat to our economy, and America cannot achieve long-term job growth until we take action to address this crisis. In the weeks ahead, a serious, bipartisan committee of lawmakers will begin the hard but necessary work of making the tough choices needed to rein in mandatory and entitlement spending, which are the drivers of our debt. The lawmakers I have appointed to serve on this joint committee are proven leaders who have earned the trust and confidence of their colleagues and constituents. They understand the gravity of our debt crisis and I appreciate their willingness to serve on this panel.
The two parties have fundamental differences about government and its proper role in our society. Where we've been able to agree, we have acted, and in a way consistent with the American peoples desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Still, the differences remain, and so does the urgent work of returning our economy to creating jobs and lifting the crushing burden of debt that threatens our childrens future. This joint committee presents an opportunity for both parties to bring to the table their best ideas, debate them on the merits, and ultimately come together to do whats best for our country. With all thats at stake, I expect that the joint select committee will conduct its work in the open and transparent manner the American people deserve.

“Mr. Ryan said that House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) hasnt yet settled on which three House Republicans he will select for the 12-member panel. Asked if he would be on the panel, Mr. Ryan said that I have not been told.
He requested it. Notice he did not say “I am not going to serve.” He said he hasn’t been told yet whether or not he would be on it. The quote you cite was made AFTER the selection. I know what I saw and heard. Maybe he had a change of heart, I am not sure, but he asked to be on the committee publicly...
Kate Upton is Fred Upton's niece. And you have excellent taste.
The choice of Upton is a catastrophe.
Now the only question is how much our net taxes paid will rise under the guise of “closing loopholes”.
Boehner has SCREWED the base with the choice of Upton.
TRUE!
I saw him being interviewed about wanting to be on this committee, and although he said he would be on it if asked, he said that there would be no good results coming from the decisions made by the 12.
It’s very smart of him to be disassociated with the losers.
Why damage his image?
That’s about as useful as reading the White House blog to educate yourself on what’s really in the health care bill.
He may have looked at what the "super" committee can accomplish and what he has planned for the Budget committee (moving from baseline to zero-based budgeting and other reforms) and what can be done there and concluded he's simply better off staying Budget committee chairman and moving forward that agenda.
That reflects his statements on FoxNews Sunday and the statement released today where he says he asked not to be considered.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan made the following statement today praising Speaker John Boehner's choices for the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction and explaining why he asked not to be among them:

Being from Michigan I can tell you we are screwed with these picks.
Upton will f**k us. The only question is; “at what point?” But then you knew that when you appointed him, didn’t you Johnny boy?
only takes one RINO.
for sure the Dems will be lockstep.
we the people be screwed, again
Pat Toomey is a great pick.
Pathetic, what’s Upton going to do,suggest using mercury bulbs to balance the budget?
WTF!
No Ryan???
Retaliation against the Tea Party.
You are wrong... sorry but you are.

You mean what he said 3 days later, after the picks were made? What about it? He’s just putting the best face on it. If you ask me, he should take Boner on. This was a big mistake. Boner’s selections suck.
RE: WTF!
No Ryan???
Actually, Paul Ryan was the natural choice for Boehner but he asked NOT to be included in the committee (see Post #62).
In which case, Boehner should have chosen the brains behind the Penny Plan — Connie Mack.
So you think he is lying?
The better way to find out about them is to let some anonymous blog poster tell you what to think about them.
