Is America Ready for 'George W. Bush on Steroids'?
The Atlantic ^ | AUG 6 2011 | JOSHUA GREEN

HOUSTON -- The days leading up to "The Response," Texas Gov. Rick Perry's prayer rally at Reliant Stadium, had looked a little grim for the governor and the event's organizers. Only about 7,000 people had confirmed that they would attend a venue that seats 71,500, and the controversial roster of sponsors -- including the American Family Association, which is labeled a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center -- drew as much attention as the event's stated purpose of praying and fasting for the nation's improvement.

- SNIP -

I thought the day's shrewdest political insight came from Dr. Richard Land, the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention and a sixth-generation Texan, who I bumped into in the hallway after Perry spoke. "If he runs, he'll be a strong candidate," Land told me. "He's a charismatic figure. I think about him on stage with the other candidates and he'll stand out. He's not a wallflower. But the most interesting question for me is whether the country is ready for somebody who looks and sounds like George W. Bush on steroids."

“Richard Land is the head of the SBC’s ethic’s committee.”

And the SBC has gone squisy on amnesty for illegals. We’re members of an SBC church, but will attend an independent church this morning to see how we like it. I never cared for the idea of my offerings/tithes being funneled via the Convention. Now the amnesty thing. Icky.

Yes— I would take a wish washy conservative as president with a conservative house and senate any day of the week.

There's no doubt that conservatives are going to make gains in the House and Senate in 2012, but we need to hedge our bets by doing everything in our power to elect a bare knuckled conservative president, too.

We could wind up with a slim majority in Congress, which can all too easily be turned into a minority when it really matters.

Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.

For you INFORMATION AND EDIFICATION, that executive order was NOT A MANDATE...it had an opt out that put the decision into the hands of the parents. That executive order merely said to FUND IT, should the parents want it!

Stop carrying the water for the democrapic propaganda!

The Women in Government entity from all over the United States took Merck’s money in 2007 and convinced a lot of Texans that females were going to be dropping dead everywhere from cervical cancer.

All Perry did was make it available for those parents that wanted it!

You can’t call either Greg Abbott, Steve Hotze or Norm Adams “RINO’s.” The pressure from the latter 2 because of the changes made by General Abbott killed the bill as much as the opposition from anyone else.

People--this is an article from the Atlantic which cites the Southern Poverty Law Center (communist front group) as an authority.

If they don't like Perry, that's a good thing.

Isn’t Obama, Bush on ‘roids?

Exactly. Anyone who is looking to cut government is not Bush. He was a disaster in that regard.

Rather than carrying the democrapic propaganda that you just spewed AGAIN, why don’t you read up and study those issues just like I did.

He’s not FOR AMNESTY! Never has been! And if you bring up the krap about the Texas Dream Act, if you bothered to read it you will find that it allows children that were raised in Texas, just like all the other children raised in Texas to PAY in-state tuition. That is PAY to use our college and university system. It is NOT free tuition nor does give a pathway to citizenship.

He’s also put more protection on our southern border than the US government we pay to protect it. GO READ UP! He’s hiring returning vets as we speak to put Game Wardens who have more authority even than sheriffs to go on a person’s property, especially federal park lands. There are 100 of those jobs open! Go apply!

The US Congress ordered the Trans Texas Corridor, not Rick Perry! There is going to be a Trans Texas Corridor and there’s nothing you nor Rick Perry can do about it.

The Gardasil executive order was not a mandate, it put an opt out and left the decision to the parents. The ONLY THING his Gardasil executive order did was provide funding for those that wanted it. The Women in Government organization took Merck’s money in 2007 and convinced a lot of Texans that females were going to be dying all over the place with cervical cancer.

Go READ UP! The uninformed are going to kill this country by believing democrapic propaganda!

Oh really? So you think the speaker of the Texas House who was holding fund raisers for democratic candidates didn’t help kill it?

Nor a bunch of RINO Bush supporters like Gregg Abbot, Steve Hotze, a doctor out of Houston that lobbies to get his natural herbal remedies paid for by insurance policies and public money, and Norm Adams who got policemen and sheriff’s to lobby against the bill because they don’t want to do the job of confronting illegal criminals??? The ones that want to go...oh he’s undocumented, let’s just let him go. You really think THOSE GUYS are conservatives?

In case you didn’t read up on the Williams bill Perry pulled up, it requires illegal aliens fingerprinted in jails who are undocumented to be run through the immigration data base to show the arrest record. Did you get it, THEY’VE ALREADY BEEN ARRESTED FOR A CRIME. It’s not about profiling.

By the way, a process that many many Texas communities are already participating on their own. SB9 just said everybody is required to do this.

I still believe that the Cooperative Program is the best way to fund missions. One good thing about SBC is that each church can do as they see fit.

I love my church, but left one in the same city that I don't agree with. Same denomination.

I get the same gut feeling with Perry as Romney........I would not buy a used car from either one of them and I damn sure do not want them running this country.

I get what you’re writing, I disagree with most of your opinion, especially if you call AG Abbott a RINO. Absolutely not!

I was there June 27, were you?https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2197759181195&set=a.1478461519203.2066479.1163711361&type=1

(Please, you’ve got to come to a pro-life rally or tea party and call Hotze a “RINO” and declare him “not-conservative.” Warn me so that I can move to the other side of the room.)

I agree that the Speaker did everything he could to kill the Bill, but he had help from all sides.

It’s already illegal for a City or County to prohibit anyone from following State or Federal law - SB 9 would have added penalties including withholding of State funds. I agreed with that. In addition, if the person is already “arrested” and being fingerprinted, the bill is unnecessary. The problem was with people being questioned for other investigations.

Yes, like John Kerry he was for amnesty before he was against it. He was for the NAFTA Highway before he was against it, too. How many girls had the Gardasil shot put out by Merck, who contributed to his campaign? I do not think any “shot” can prevent cancer! And we have yet t9o see if the drug caused harm.

Sorry, those excuses just don’t cut it with me. The only reason he changed his policy was to get re0elected.

Then we need to be absolutely certain that the candidate we nominate is not a flip flopper, doesn’t cause possible harm to others for campaign donations, respects our immigration laws as they were written, and believes in the sovereignty of the U.S. of America as designed by our founders.

Read Anne Coulter’s “Demonic”. It’s a real eye opener.

I appreciate the enormous effort you went to to explain your support for Rick Perry. You are certainly sold on him.

I can understand why Perry switched to the Republican Party, like Ronald Reagan did, and for the same reasons. Unfortunately one of the reason is the Democrat Party has become the Communist Party. But now the Republican Party have proven themselves to be wannabes, so I identify with the Tea Party, which is not any one ideal, but made up of solid citizens who value life in the U.S.A, who cherish her sovereignty, and cling to the truths and proven success of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Tea Party is none other than “We the people”. And for the most part (I wish I could say totally) may I add “the God fearing people”?

Do not believe the lies being touted about the Tea Party by the MSM. The former two party political system is now nearly an inadvisable one party system! And that Party is Communism.

It is too early to be taken completely in by any one candidate. We simply do not know enough about any of them.

The RNC did not permit a proven Conservative to win the last nomination for president. I suspect if the RNC backs Rick Perry it will tell us all more than we want to know about him. If he is truly as Conservative and patriotic a you say, the RNC will draft Zeb Bush at just the right moment, and we will not have changed direction but slowed the journey.

Well, I bother to read the bills, right off the sites they’re recorded on. I bothered to read the executive order to see what it said. I was on the transportation ad hoc committee and studied the whole corridor process. I don’t fart around with democrapic propaganda.
