Eric Cantor: Obama 'in over his head'

By: Jennifer Epstein August 3, 2011 01:10 PM EDT

President Barack Obama is “in over his head” when it comes to tackling the country’s economic troubles, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said Wednesday.

The president has not run a business or created jobs and has proven himself ill-suited to put the economy back on track, the Virginia Republican said in a midday interview on the Wall Street Journal’s website with opinion columnist Peggy Noonan and editor James Freeman.

At one point during negotiations on a deal to raise the debt ceiling, Cantor said that the president chose to play politics rather than working on the substance of the deal. Obama seemed “agitated” by Republicans’ opposition to any measures that might be perceived as tax increases – something that the president wanted in a deal – and, at one point, said, “Eric, don’t call my bluff,” Cantor recalled.

Though Republicans were reluctant to support a bill to raise the debt ceiling that didn’t also include plans to vote on a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, the “prevailing sentiment” among members of the GOP was that “we didn’t want to go past Aug. 2 because of the unknown” without raising the debt ceiling.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will be responsible for choosing the three House Republicans to join the committee that will propose ways to reduce the deficit, and Cantor said he is getting “a lot of calls and emails from members who want to serve” on the panel, including some who voted against the deal.

Cantor voted yes to this monstrosity of a bill. I’ve lost complete respect for him. Every year he sponsors a “Republican Round up” in Richmond, VA. Every year my family and I go. Not this year. It’ll be interesting to see how it does go this year.

The biggest problem the President has is knowing that many Democrats feel the same way. His numbers are dropping so fast among Democrats, he’s got to be afraid that they’ll ask him to leave before the election.

At this point, Cantor has zero credibility concerning anything economic.

Color me surprised that the community cupcake sales didn’t fully prepare him for this.

It's no surprise that Cantor would have voted for it.

It contained what he & Boehner had said from the beginning they wanted...no tax hikes and cuts equal to the amount of debt hike.

Don't know if you knew that's what he said he wanted from the beginning.

So that’s one thing he and Cantor have in common.

It’s in the air...I wouldn’t be surprised if the 25th was invoked, first. Then he would be found to be mentally unstable or some illness at which point...Biden would become the official president.

The accidental president
The affirmative action president
The rigid ideologue

Cantor voted yes to this monstrosity of a bill.

Cantor and SOH Bonehead and any Republican in either house who voted for this massive tax hike and spending orgy needs to be thrown out of office. The list of RINOs who agreed with the muslim in our White House should be our list of turncoats to be removed from office . . . Cantor, Bonehead, LaTourette, Portman, and anyone else on the Yea list.
