NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wild boar are invading the farms of central New York state, attacking livestock, killing family pets, chasing people and posing "devastating consequences" for the area, federal officials warn.
The feral swine are a non-native species suspected of escaping from game farms, and as many as a couple of hundred are roaming the state, said Paul Curtis, a natural resources professor at Cornell University.
While an exact picture of the wild boar population in New York State is unclear, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the swine were successfully breeding in the three counties and producing litters averaging 4 to 6 piglets.

No, I don’t hunt them. This is what I have heard. If you saw hunters taking big hogs to a processing plant, maybe they were just using a few parts.
They get rank after 100 pounds, is what I have heard.
At any rate, I wish we could get rid of them. they are dangerous. They come around my place and tear up fences and I have been charged by a big hog.

The only downside I can see is they wasted alot of bacon.
I use a Marlin 1895-SS lever action chambered for 45-70 Govt. and shoot P.M.C. 400GR. semi-jacketed flat nose rounds for feral hogs. Out here hogs can be a serious problem but my popgun is a serious solution.
I prefer a bounty or at least an open season, no bag limit and eligible to be taken with any sort of hunting license.

B.S. : My 30-06 goes through 1/2 inch boiler plate at 60 degrees.

They're not too bad if you deep pit them, but most folks throw the meat away and eat the rocks.
The meat is good but it can be quite dry. It's a good meat to mix with venison in sausage.
One word: bacon.
A "Bounty" would be the government paying people to do something they're already inclined to do. There's already too much of that going on. That's how our economy got into this mess.
Sell tags. Perhaps offer a cash prize for the biggest one harvested.
I don’t think it works quite that way. The boar will still be charging at you, you’ll just be ‘charging’ backwards at the same speed for as long as you can hold on ;)

I thought all swine were non-native to North America, having been imported by colonists and explorers back in the 15th and 16th centuries.
The article talked about wild boars with pseudorabies virus and that worries me a little bit... How do you know the boar you take is safe to handle (because you’re not supposed to handle the carcass of an animal that had rabies, much less eat it)? Anyway, if that issue could be addressed satisfactorily, you should get yourself a big horizontal freezer and lay down some fabulous meat. Keep it “full up.” You could save tons of money on groceries, assuming you’re not vegetarian. Just sayin’... Cheers!

A place where they breed and release or import and release game animals for people to hunt. Hunters pay to hunt the land where they game has been released.
If a hunter goes pheasant hunting on non-game farm private land or on public land, the hunter may or may not even see a pheasant. There may not even be any pheasant there. If the hunter goes to a game farm, there will be pheasant there.
Game farms also import exotic game from other parts of the world for hunters to pay to hunt.
A lot of hunters don't consider this to be “sporting”.
When I was in Hawaii several of my Samoan friends hunted wild boar with spears. It was hazardous but fun and the pig tasted great after being buried and baked.
The more whack the better. I have an SKS. Not the best thing for that job.
