NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wild boar are invading the farms of central New York state, attacking livestock, killing family pets, chasing people and posing "devastating consequences" for the area, federal officials warn.
The feral swine are a non-native species suspected of escaping from game farms, and as many as a couple of hundred are roaming the state, said Paul Curtis, a natural resources professor at Cornell University.
While an exact picture of the wild boar population in New York State is unclear, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the swine were successfully breeding in the three counties and producing litters averaging 4 to 6 piglets.

I know, I was pointing out how stupid it was to think wild hogs could live there.

NH and NY get plenty of snow, and these wild boar can root through a snowbank to get food. These are Russian boar, and most likely descended from escaped boar from Corbin Park in NH.

Ha, ha, yes members of the mystic breed, they walk on water and leave no tracks. How do you think they were killed out in Britain in the 16th century.

Only in a democrat stronghold like New York would people be too scared to know how to deal with a wild boar population that needs to clearly be brought under control. Just shoot the damn things and eat them!

True, true. And I believe they usually aimed for the jugular on this, which would lead to a pretty quick death methinks. Does make it a bit harder to aim though

No restrictions on hunting feral hogs, they are not Wild Boars. You can hunt them from a helicopter with your AK 47 if you want to. I (hope) it was Rick Perry who said that, should make the enviroweenies hate him even more. ha! As far as Texas having more than any other state, I don’t know if that is true.

“The only wild boar that I have eaten was absolutely AWFUL! Strong and gamey and left a bad taste in my mouth.”
Let me guess.
They left the fat on the meat when they cleaned it and cooked it.

Thanks. Television has had several shows on wild pigs and they usually are in Texas. Texas probably has more open spaces of any of the lower 48 that is why I assumed they had more wild pigs. A hunt sounds like fun, though I would be a little leery of eating wild pig due to such pigs often being heavily infested with parasites.

It also was a big old male hog. Maybe a young female would taste good but never again for me.

Bigger ones can be a challenge to cook.
It also depends on the time of year they are taken and what they have been eating.
Early fall when there are a lot of green acorns on the ground for them to eat, they are bitter tasting like an acorn.

Where I live, I have seen wild boars,
here in Michigan they are spreading throughout the state. I recently read an article in the local paper about a resident here in S.E. Michigan (New Baltimore) seeing one in his back yard.
I guess the hunting laws say you can shoot them on sight, any time of the year, but you have to have a hunting license..........
It doesn't address the issue of local ordinances which ban the firing of weapons within their city limits..........
