So do I--and a lot of us "little people."
“The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero
You ask a good question G. The phraseology is that this committee must deal with the deficit which, by definition, includes consideration of tax increases.
However, I don't know how else they could do it. I must suppose both sides are hoping that the political climate is such that it will be beneficial to their side....ie the Dems to tax the millionaires and billionaires and the pubs to avoid any tax increases.
frankly this seems fair enough to me. I'm still enchanted by the Tea Party crew in the House and I seriously doubt they'll cave on any big tax increases. I give this part of the deal a thumbs up.
Further, I know I risk wrath here, but my initial feeling is that this is a pretty good deal for the pubs. The one big thing they gave up was agreeing to take this whole discussion off the table after the beginning of 2012, ie well before the election. This was a big deal for Obamer. He didn't want to be in the situation he's in now, which he's handled horribly...his disapproval now up to 50%-he goes down slow like the Terminator but he goes down. By me, the pubs got an overwhelming advantage to win the next election and losing this talking point won't hurt them much. Not that the pubs use talking points to their advantage at any rate.
I note, with my very open mind, that the Dems gave up on raising taxes, which they should have give me a break. Yeah they're keeping it open with that committee thing but I made my arguments that we can live with this.
It's all been very interesting and at the end of the day I think more damage was done to the Dems and Obama over all this than the Repubs, never mind what the media says.
The guy fighting to keep the hands of others out of your pockets generally rules the roost.
Do you really think Moochelle would voluntarily give up taxpayer funded vacations and endless bowls of ice cream?

NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! and Barry the Marxist Kenyan isn’t about to give up his plane. He is obsessed with that plane for some reason. I expect they will have to pull him out of it and he will be in a straight jacket, when it’s time for him to leave. Who knows, he may try to buy it, with stolen tax payer dollars, or course.
I dare to dream that this new committee might kill all those green initiatives of Obamers as part of the cost cutting. If the pubs would go out and sell it I'm quite sure most Americans would buy into it, our common sense selves who carry this country on our backs.
I don't see cutting back on the military, reasonably, will be a big problem for the pubs in the near future.
I don’t understand why Repub’s would agree to this. Automatic cuts to defense (especially if they are as large as some people fear) are a threat to our national security.
These “triggers” will ensure that repubs vote for tax increases. Dem’s won’t hesitate to hold defense spending hostage.
Why would Repub’s give 12 people in Congress so much power?
think in the end, we will have Boehner, Pelosi, the rest of the Democrats, and liberal Republicans unite to pass the final bill over the objections of the Tea Party freshmen and other conservatives. Obama and Reid will have gotten an immediate increase in the debt ceiling in exchange for projected future cuts along with a super panel can can recommend tax increases. Bonus points to the Obama left: They will have divided the GOP against itself. What a mess.
I agree. Boehner will take a bad deal, the media will compliment Boehner, and Boehner will say very little to criticize the Democrats, Obama and the deal itself.
Come the 2012 elections, we will probably win the White House but the Senate and House elections for the Republicans will be a mess.
Tea Party folks will be mad and the mushy middle type of voters, will think that the deal was "good", because Boehner will be quoted as saying that the deal was "good".
Exactly, the Tea Party has all ready won simply because the terms of the debate are now changed forever. They did not win a complete annihilating victory but this will be a long war. This is the Tea Party equivalent of Lexington/Concord.
The war on Federal Spending has now started.
The super committee that Dingy harry and McConnell have established has the mandate to come up with spending in the amount of 4%,big whoop.
Standard and Poors want 10%/400 billion(they said 4 trillion over 10 years) or we get downgraded.
Woof, Woof on CNN just announced that if the committee does not do its job we get an immediate 4% cut of all spending, what BS!!
4% of a 3.6 trillion dollar budget is 144 billion, nothing compared to what Moody/Standard & Poors is demanding.
It's not even close to 400 billion.
Our debt will be downgraded to AA probably at midnight some weekend so few will ever know just like the super committee will negotiate in secret apparently what both sides want.
The big question which has not been addressed,I'm so surprised,is how much of the 2.2,2.4 trillion will our side give zero at once? The entire thing or just part? If he gets the entire thing than what have we been doing all this time?
IMHO, we are on the way to getting rolled again, time will tell.
Even if you confiscated EVERYTHING the rich have, I am betting you do not get to $1 trillion. And that would be a one time shot, once that was gone we would be in far worse shape then we are now since we would of killed the geese that lay the golden eggs of economic expansion.
I guess the fairest thing to do is wait until there is an agreement and then see what they do.
The big DC political machine lie of this whole thing is the GOP needs a bill.
NO, the 0 Democrats need a bill. They are the party of spend. They are the ones who have to go to the voters in 2012 and defend their total mishandling of the economy for the last 4 years.
The GOP candidate in 2012 is going to be running against DC. The 2012 election will be a referendum on 0s Presidency.
Time for people to quit buying the propaganda fed them by the DNC Media-Political machine, the 0 Dems, not the GOP, will be hurt the worst by this failure
The GOP will be divided only as long as the key players want to be divided. When I look at what has happened the last few weeks, I see the new guys, who are a sizable minority in the House, and the establishment both get a sense of the other's strengths and weaknesses.
That can be a valuable improvement in understanding the other players on your team, or it can be a source of division. How you react will depend on whether you think the team victory is important, or your individual stardom is more important.
In 2012 the GOP candidate is going to be the outsider running against the DC machine. The Zero Dems have to defend their running DC for the last 4 years.
Rightly or wrongly the President is held to account for the state of the Economy, not the Congress. 2012 is going to be a referendum on Zero, not the GOP House
I think that was the same argument that Clinton and the democrats used in the 90's to end Clinton's term with a "projected" budget surplus. Have you ever heard the dem's mention the surplus Clinton left, but omit the military cuts?
Bush then spent the next 8 years replacing and rebuilding what Clinton and the democrats cut.
Ha! Close your eyes and envision Inauguration Day 2013...Obama climbs aboard AF1 for his final flight back to Chicago. While Moochelle peruses the inflight menu of delicacies, Barack Hussein and his Chicago henchmen hijack the plane to Kenya.
Both sides are so slick they have not mentioned how much they will give zero and how soon which is the entire ballgame for some of us.
