The Senate voted to kill a House-approved bill to raise the debt ceiling, leaving the ball in the court of Senate leadership to produce a deficit reduction bill, with just days before the Aug. 2 deadline. The vote was 59-41.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid followed through on his promise to kill the bill, pushed through the House a day late by House Speaker John Boehner. The White House, which has thrown its weight behind a Reid proposal, had promised to veto the bill had it miraculously passed the Senate.
The Senate also killed the Cut, Cap, Balance Act last Friday and has yet to vote on a formal proposal. Having passed two proposals and with little appetite and time to attempt another bill, the House now waits to act on a Senate bill.
I stuck my neck out a mile to get an agreement with the president of the United States, Boehner thundered from the floor after the vote. Its time for the administration and time for our colleagues across the aisle to put something on the table. Tell us where you are!
Brad Dayspring, spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, announced via Twitter that the House will vote on Reids plan Saturday to show that it is not capable of passing. First votes are expected to begin at 1 p.m.

It has them stymied
How is it stymied? It appears DC actually likes what we do.
We send them innocent in the ways of DC new congresscritters and they turn more than half of them in 8 months. It won’t take long to turn the rest. We do all the heavy lifting getting them into congress and all the DC Hacks have to do is turn them. We make the investment, DC gets the return.
This civil war will likely be fought behind computer screens. I seriously doubt anyone is gathering arms and heading to Washington D.C.
The days of “overthrowing our government” have long come and gone.
Americans are mostly lazy. They want their entitlement checks - they want their welfare checks.
Now THEY might get up off the couch and do something drastic if that check doesn’t come in the mail. The other wise, though, will do nothing.
Make some noise on here.
That is about it.
Civil war in this country is probably a thing of the past. Rhetoric may sound nice. But that is all it is. Most Americans are just too darn lazy to throw anything more than a television remote or a cell phone at the tv set.
This is a false article. It gives the appearance that they voted on it. But really Reid single handedly killed it. Republican’s need to get out in front of this and demand a vote on it—the first one that is. But even this one to show the American public where the real issue is.
Actually, Pat Toomey (R.,Pa.)has already worked on a prioritation bill. I don’t have the number of the piece of legislation but he was working to introduce a bill a few days ago that laid out the spending priorities.
Tabled again. Might as well vote present. Nice precedent, wonderful example they set for future generations. Reminds me of the three stooges, Duck, Dodge and Dive....
I really despise these people. This Kabuki theatre charade is lost on me and the general public...do SOMEthing you craven cowards.
Nope. Boehner is NOT going to be crying this time. Rather he is laughing at all of us Tea Party people. This was the plan from the "get go". Boehner has been working behind the scenes with Obama, Reid, and McConnell all along.
Nothing good is going to come from this entire farse. It was meant to fail so they can put in McConnell's plan of giving Obama the debt ceiling increase as he wants with no real cuts in anything. Mark Levin has been talking about this and I believe he's right. For the people in the Republican party harping about not having taxes raised, Mark says it was actually Harry Reid who asked Obama not to push for tax increases because Reid knows that the 2012 election is coming up and does not that to be an election issue.
We've been BAMBOOZLED by the GOP establishment again. The good ole boys, including Boehner are laughing behind closed doors in their smoke filled rooms. And it's business as usual. We need to clear these vermin out. Mark the ones who sold us out and remove them from office.
Never mind I see teh did vote.
Sounds like a plan. :)
MM, there are comments all over this thread covering every position.
But it is your comments that I desperately want to believe.
I am confused about this whole situation—I don’t know what to believe.
This is a serious request—please explain why you are saying what you are saying on this thread.
I need to have hope.
Thanks.
They stood tall. They just didn’t have the numbers. We’d best make sure they have the numbers come 2012. It’s our last shot.
“Wed best make sure they have the numbers come 2012.”
I hope it’s a large enough majority to avoid the Democrat filibusters this time.
The Reid/McConnell/Boehner Bill will pass, Obama will sign it in front of his fake greek columns, claim he saved the Republic and carry his grand victory and superb leadership into the 2012 election.
And Boehner will cry himself to sleep tonight.

You saw the script, huh 8-?
“But I think Boehner is in a horrible position...and, I’ll say it...I think he was good with his little rant today.”
It persuaded my Democrat mother. I never thought that would happen, but today was the day. I’ve been smiling all day because of that :)
God, how I detest those arrogant bastards.
Reid? LOL.......what an extreme load
The Democrat Party has become a hostile terrorist force who is now dedicated to the eradication of our Capitalistic way of life in America.
If the Left are not allowed to retain THEIR plan to continuously grow Government then they now are poised to disallow this country’s financial life blood to flow.
Another way to say this - they are poised for the killing blow to Capitalism.
They have the means and are now in execution mode.
The Senate’s choice to kill a Bill that would allow the Government to pursue a path of austerity completely shows their cards.
I had to take a break from this. The defeatism and lashing out by nearly everyone on every thread was making me angry and when I get that angry, I know I better haul it in for awhile so I don’t get nuts.
I’m gong to try and give some rational perspective here because ultimately, what we are dealing with is a straight up war that is being fought...mostly behind the scenes, and thus far, our evil Conservatives have managed to give harry reid and obama the screaming meemies. THAT is a good thing.
I am going to ask you to recall that it wasn’t that long ago there was a firestorm in the lamestram because Mitch McConnell said his first job priority was to STOP obama and make sure he was a one term president.
Believe it or not, sometimes politicians tell the truth because that is exactly what the House and Senate pubbies have been doing ever since the health care debacle.
obama has been trying to RULE by fiat.
McConnell might very well be one of the best parliamentary strategists there are. He has waltzed circles around reid AND obama and so has Boehner. They have caused a huge meltdown and the dems are reeling from this. They have nowhere to go.
The pubbies might have actually managed to line up enough dem votes in the senate to bring the CCB bill back on to the floor. THAT is why reid suddenly announced there would be NO VOTE on his own bill last evening. HE doesn’t have the votes to pass it and McConnell has utterly refused to “negotiate”” with him.
McConnell’s refusal, even for stalling purposes, tells me that he has some measure of confidence that HE and the pubbies in the Senate are in the catbird seat,
There is NO SUCH thing as a reid, McConnell, Boehner bill. What there IS, is a Mcconnell/Boehner STRATEGY to force the CCB down reid and obama’s throat with some dem help.
What I suspect happened with regard to the TEA Party pubbies in the house, was that Boehner talked to them person to person and ASKED, not demanded, not threatened, that they TRUST him...and they DID. THAT is why he had a comfortable cushion during the House vote.
Several of the TEA Party individuals who I saw interviewed live, refused to discuss what Boehner did say, but to a man, they said he looked them in the eye, treated them with respect, and told them he needed their help. There were no threats. No bribes. Just maybe he told thm the truth...and it’s rather obvious they believed him.
All this dissing and second guessing, and readiness to throw everyone under the bus here just makes no sense if anyone has followed this entire thing closely.
The strategy, short and long, is to STOP obama from doing as much damage as he could when the dems controlled all three houses. And credit needs to be given where credit is due. So far, they have done a masterful job and I am impressed. REALLY impressed, because I wasn’t sure or confident that they could do it. But they have. And I say G-d bless them. They know our entire country and way of life is at stake here. They know that a nod from obama will set the streets on fire. They have had to walk a fugging tightrope and I sit here everyday watching people who sit behind their computers, cluelessly insulting, calling names, armchair tough guys who wouldn’t know how or what to do if their lives depended on it, bashing and trashing the only hope we have right now of making it through to 2012 with as little damage as possible.
Both Boehner and McConnell know we are out here. I think they are BOTH doing the right thing and will DO the right thing, even if they think WE don’t understand or appreciate it. Whatever else anyone thinks, WE have a tradition of patriotism. I am saying we have PATRIOTS working for us right now, and that gives me hope.
