In Norway, the right to possess a firearm is not protected by constitution or even law.
Anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm must obtain a license from the government and then prove to the government some "genuine reason to possess." You must not only sound convincing that you will use the weapon for hunting, target shooting, collecting, personal protection, etc., but then the category of gun you wish to purchase must fall in the officially recognized government uses. Criminal and mental background checks apply, a firearm safety course is mandated and any acquisition, possession and transfer must be registered with the government.
And still, some guy walked into a "gun-free zone," just like last time, and...

Their system is geared so that a person who has shown mental issues and is considered unstable...will not be able to own or buy a weapon. That part of the law might be supported by most people in the US, and most gun-owners. Course, in this case...the Oslo shooter was just a “normal” guy before the shooting and he would not have been denied ownership. Even now, it’s going to be difficult to judge him insane by their standards of the law. He kinda falls into the McVeigh/Unabomber/Charles Manson category.
“Even now, its going to be difficult to judge him insane by their standards of the law.”
Yea, some of us do wonder whether a person who opposes an insane government is insane himself. For example, had he done EXACTLY the same thing in Nazi German or Stalinist Russia, would we have the same problem with him?
And so what constitutes insanity on the part of a government? One could make a strong argument that instituting policies clearly designed to turn your country into an Islamic dictatorship is insane...couldn’t one?
There are going to be failures (shootings) even if government adopts some sort of heightened “sanity standards” for possessing a firearm. An otherwise normal person can become unstable years later. It would require a very active bureaucracy (police state) to chase down every gun owner who ever visited a therapist.
The motive behind leftism is religious belief, with humanity in the role of the Author of the universe. Isn’t this a logical, if unstated, conclusion from the precept that reality is socially constructed? The evils of the world always result from ideas that oppose leftist ideology, and to correct the evils, the world must be brought closer to correct morality.
Why do people on the left never come out and say this? They assiduously avoid religious language and the trappings of religion. They reject Christianity and traditional Judaism. But they lack the self-awareness to see that they have just substituted another religion for the one they abandoned.
Because liberalism is the enemy of personal freedom disguised as "good intentions" which serve only to consistently prove the Law of Unintended Consequences.
Utopia?
It is Utopia lost.
Forever more the place and the conference will be viewed with fear and dread. No longer is there the freedom to destroy society with cockamamie leftist balderdash
Is Utoya one of the Jackson’s ????
I would. He stalked and shot teenagers in a summer camp. It doesn't matter if it had been a nazi summer camp or a stalinist summer camp. There is no way it can be justified as a legitimate target.
Historically there have been many times that people should have taken up arms against their government but didn't. We live in a country that was born of people taking up arms and fighting against tyranny when they felt that they had no choice. There has to be line that the people will not let the government cross, but even if that day comes, it does not justify shooting up a summer camp.
Does any sane person really want his sanity, for the purposes of exercising all of his God given rights as a free citizen, to be subject to the 'objective' determination of a fascist, baby-killing diesel dyke like Janet Reno, or Janet Napolitano, or a racist thug like Ricky Holder? If you answer 'yes' please report to the nearest public rubber room for further evaluation.
One way to reduce the potential for gov't abuse of such power would be to place the burden of a M'Naghten style proof on the government in any such case. Let the government be required to prove to a court that old Tom absolutely positively believes Schmucky Chucky Shumer is a truth saying, God fearing Real American Patriot, before they can deprive old Tom of his rights.
More proof gun control doesn’t work
This is why more regular folks should be armed. Then, if some crazy does start something, he will not cause as much harm as he would have been able to do in a crowd of unarmed people.
Even if you keep crazies from getting a gun, they can have a knife or make a bomb. There will always be these violent incidents, but as I said, the best protection against them is a citizenry that is capable of defending itself rather than waiting an hour and a half for the police to show up.
Because they crave power -- power over you, me and everybody else. Whether it causes "awful results" or not is a matter of complete indifference to them.
I think you pose good questions.
I don’t think anything justifies deliberately killing teenagers & young adults.
However, I can perfectly understand your point, which in parts suggests that there are double standards. And, there are. Both for ‘criminal behavior/actions’ as well as ‘insanity’ & how they may be defined, by different people or grps, to serve a purpose.
1) A car bomb does not only kill evil bureaucrats, so it is hardly a weapon of choice. Something more finely targeted is preferable.
2) Children are innocents, even if someday they will become part of the ruling class, so mass murder at a Hitlerjugend or Young Pioneer camp is not something we would support.
3) Once having taken the path of mass murder, one does not set one’s gun down just because the cops show up. One continues to the bitter end. If you actually believe your beliefs you carry out them even to your own death.
Are you describing the gun laws in Norway. . .?
It looks easier to get a gun in Norway than New York State.
“A good point, but most of us at Free Republic would still have a problem with his actions even if he were in Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia.”
Thanks...the first response was rather harsh, yours and the others are a bit easier on me.
As more and more people get jailed in Europe for simply trying to keep their home countries looking at least somewhat like they’ve looked for the past 1000 years, more people are going to pop and take actions against against the ruling power structure.
...but the people at that training camp were not (yet) in that power structure and it’s very possible that some may have even been turned off after having to chant for the destruction of Israel...and thus would have never joined that power structure. I agree - there is no way to justify armed action against people who are NOT oppressing you.
