Sheryl Crow will be auctioning off her 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster to raise money for the tornado victims of Joplin, Mo. The money raised from the auction of the car will go to benefit the Joplin Schools Recovery Fund, a fund created by Community Foundation of the Ozarks and its Joplin-based affiliate, the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, Inc. A fitting charity for the former schoolteacher turned rock star.
Crow donated her car to Gooding & Company, an auction house in Pebble Beach, Ca., where it will go up for auction the weekend of Aug. 2oth and 21st. The 100 Miles from Memphis singer said of the charitable act, After the tornado in Joplin I was moved to help rebuild a city so close to where I grew up in Missouri. My hope is that the auction of my 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster will bring in funds to help rebuild the schools in the area.
The car has an estimated value of $50,000 $80,000, but Crow is hoping to get $100,000 out of it for the Joplin Schools Recovery Fund. The car has been a favorite for her however she doesnt drive it anymore so the next best thing to selling it was to raise awareness for the people of Joplin.
Louise Knauer, foundation vice president for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, spoke of recent donations by Brad Pitt and his partner Angelina Jolie and of Sheryl Crows car auction, Its just great that they remember their roots and are paying attention. Pitt and Jolie donated $500,000 to the foundation last month.
The tornado that hit Joplin, Mo. on May 22nd was the deadliest tornado the U.S. has seen since the early 1950s. Over 159 people lost their lives and over 30% of the city was destroyed. The community of Joplin has proven to be resilient in the wake of the destruction by pulling together and utilizing the help of celebrities who raise awareness to bring in funds for rebuilding.
yes and that would be Janice Joplin for Joplin....
I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting.
You beat me to it. That was my first thought ;)
She should also include a roll of toilet tissue.
That’d be what, about a 10-year suppply by her standards?
That should buy a lot of TP at 1 sheet a customer....
It’s a Mercedes not a Rolls.
She’s got more miles on her than the car has on it.
Good for her!
She's not bad for a re-tread. (Ducks from female Freepers...)
Normally, I can’t stand this witch. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day (or once a day in the case of digital clocks).
I remember she said a few years ago everyone should use one sheet of toilet paper when taking a #2. Show me Sheryl how you do that.
an even nicer gesture would be filling it full with double ply TP rolls.
Making a McDonald’s commercial in a basement studio in some guy’s parent’s house - $40,000.
Getting “in” with the very liberal and very capitalist music industry to make the most of your talent - an estimated $40 million.
Getting rid of your classic car by donating it to a charitable organization which auctions it off, thereby allowing you to have a nice tax deduction as well as a lot of free publicity enhancing your public image - priceless.
Very decent of her. I take back every mean thing I’ve ever said about her.
Well no. Actually I don’t take them ALL back. Just most of them.
She’s still a liberal.
I knew a girl like her once. She poop out a little black marble about once a week. She got abdo-lutely the most out of everything she ate!
Gonna take a bunch of trees to rebuild Joplin Sheryl.
Can we recycle our toilet paper too? One sheet at a time for violent mother earth?
One of the few things Lance liked riding more than the bike.
Nice gesture by Sheryl. I don’t care for her politics and some of her ideas but overall she is a decent person. At least she is trying to do something positive.
Actions speak loudly. I applaud this action by Ms. Crow.
