I know many of my fellow Freepers will understand my request. Please say a special prayer for a great dog who went to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. He blessed us with 13 years of loyalty, happiness, love, and security. We are heartbroken we couldn't take the pains and debilitating problems of old age from him, but we were able to end his suffering before it got worse. He was proof that angels all don't have wings, some have fur and four legs. As a child I had always had dogs growing up, but my mother would never allow me to have a German Sheppard because she was afraid of them. After I found him near my house, the vet informed me he had been born one year to the day my mother passed away. When my daughter was born, many people told us to get rid of him because he was 11 then and they said he would hurt the baby since he wasn't used to being around kids. That was absolute nonsense. The first time she was sick, he sensed something before it started and came running into the room and stood right at my feet as I was holding her. That night, and many after, when I was trying to get her to sleep by walking her, he was right behind me, all through the night. He would sleep by her crib (his usual place was at the foot of our bed) and keep watch over her. When she woke up, he stuck his nose through the bars for her to pet him. Whenever my daughter got scared of anything, he would run to her side and lean so she could hug him and he always calmed her fears. He also calmed my fears when my husband was away. The first thought my daughter has in the morning is of her puppy dog. This past Christmas, when she woke up she wasn't interested in what Santa Claus had brought her, she wanted to make sure her puppy dog was in the house and he was ok. But now his dog house is empty, his bowls are dry, and his leash hangs in the garage.
Prayers up for you and your family. We have a Golden Retriever that is truly a family member. She goes everywhere with us.
She is eight years old and age is just begining to show. We know that some day, we will be in the same situation as you are now. I do not look forward to that day, but in the meantime we cherish each moment with her.
I certainly understand what you are going through and I will pray that God will bring you comfort and another companion for you - not to replace your fur baby that has gone to the bridge but to bring a smile to your life!
I have found a great deal of comfort in knowing that God made and purposefully loaned me the wonderful creatures that have graced my life. With their passing, they have returned to the only One who loves them more than I do, and I have entrusted them to His keeping.
Prayers from our family to yours.
My priest and I believe that all dogs go to heaven. There must be a special place there for your sweet dog.
Our daily companions are our best friends. They are numbers 5 & 6 of a group of Golden Retrievers we’ve cared for during the last 40 years. I was with everyone of them at the end. It doesn’t get easier one bit. I would rather have any one of them than a relationship with most of the people I’ve met. You will mourn and never forget. I read your post and remembered everyone of them. Hopefully, and I’d bet on this outcome from your heartfelt post, you’ll soon rescue a dog in need of your special attention and care.
In the meantime, I’ll mourn with you.

Yes, Dogs are Angels. What was your Angel’s name? I will say a prayer.
“You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.”
~Robert Louis Stevenson
Tears rolling down my cheeks. Losing a pet is really tough, but the memories are worth the pain. Prayer on the way for you and your family.
As I read your post my 13 year-old English Setter is laying by my feet. I know I won’t have her much longer and am dreading losing her.
I pray for you and your family. And, like the other posters say, it’ll get better with time, and another little dog you can bless with a home and love.
We lost our poochie months ago. Prayer for sure. We have another poochie. I still miss my Tasha! It is really hard. Prayers for you at this hard time in your life.
I share your pain and your joy of having a shepherd dog in your life. Mine is eight and I dread the day when it eventually comes, for us to part, if only for awhile. I know it will be the hardest thing I ever go through. Hugs of comfort for you. And I offer a prayer that you will know if and when the time is right, to open your heart and home to another rescue.
Oh gosh, I am so sorry. I have lost a few thru the years. We had a GSD when I was a kid also. She actually belonged to my Grandfather, but she lived with us for about 3 years because of a situation and then went back to live with him. She lived to be 13 or 14. She was such a great dog (they really are). I don’t know what to tell you other than I do know how it feels. Hugs to you. They leave such a hole in your heart.
To all of you, Thank you for your kind words of support and comfort. You are all making a very difficult time more easy to bear for me.
13 years is a long life for a German Shepherd. Take comfort in knowing that you have given him a great life, and honor him by getting a new dog to take his place.
I sympathize with your mother because I, too, was terrified of dogs — especially GSDs. I got over it by adopting a lost Schnauzer. And, since, have been pleased to know a wonderful GSDfor the last 10 years, who belongs to my best friend. She’s a real love biunny whose life is also coming to an end — she can barely get up and walk anymore. I’ll cry when she goes, and she’s not even my dog.
I couldn’t bear the thought of getting a new dog after my first Golden Retriever passed at 15 1/2. Finally, after about 4 years, we adopted my current Golden from a Rescue group. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. He is the best dog ever, and he is going to grieve when my friend’s GSD passes. He can’t play with her any more because of her skeletal problems, and he doesn’t understand why. So sad.
My prayers are with you and your whole family.
Prayers up to comfort you in this sad time.
I am so so so sorry for your loss. May God bless your four legged friend
Praying for you and your family MissEdie.
May God comfort you and your family in your time of grief and loss.
Blessings,
SZ
