The guest list for Rick Perry's August 6 day of prayer won't include many U.S. governors.
Only two governors, both Republican, plan to join Perry at the event at Houston's Reliant Stadium, which Perry has labeled as a non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting. Perry invited all of his fellow U.S. governors to the event.
Just two - Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal - have accepted the invitation.
Mark P. Jones, a government professor at Rice University, said he is not surprised by the lukewarm response.
"For a Democrat there is nothing to be gained by attending, and politically its best for them to quietly decline," he said. He added that even for Republicans, being associated with an exclusively Christian prayer event could hurt them among moderate supporters, and attending the event could mar their reputation if a speaker says something scandalous.
But he said he doubts Perry will have trouble filling the venue, which seats 71,500, with religious supporters.

They can do whatever they want.
I read you loud and clear....and get the point.
They can do whatever they want.
I expect they will.
This is so small a showing from rock ribbed Republicans that I too think these folks are largely too busied out to stop for this. BTW, I wonder if Sarah Palin, even though not a governor now, is showing.
Do you plan on attending?
Just to reiterate, "Moderate". What is a moderate Republican?. Pro-abortion, gun control types? Other Democrat platform beliefs as well? That's my guess. I don't believe we need that kind of 'support'.
“It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favors.” ....President George Washington
No. I will leave the public grandstand praying to phonies like your hero Slick Rick Perry. Jesus taught us to pray in private.
If this country is to be saved, it will be by a rebel (like Palin, Bachmann, or Cain), not by a hack career politician who showed his true colors by supporting Al Gore, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain. No genuine "pro-life social conservative" would ever have made those choices. Your man is either a fake, or someone who is a fatally defective judge of character.
algore AND john mccain? yikes....double whammy.....I’ll give him a pass on Rudy as Rudy came before mccain on my preferred list.
In before the Perry-hate thread-spammers...
Rick Perry also panders to La Raza, and is a globalist weak on border security. It's time conservatives quit falling for his shtick.
Good for Jindal and Brownback!
I’m all for prayer, public and private, and our political leaders need to do a lot of it.
That being said Rick Perry’s been dancing around the country for the last month practically begging people to ask him to run for President.
This stinks.
Sorry, the truth hurts you when you are trying to dissemble. Algore was pro-life and Rick Perry was a typical Texas Democrat back in the day (which wasn’t Leftist) when he supported algore. Gore was considered too conservative and too southern by those against whom he ran for President that year, and by the MSM.
Algore learned his lesson, that if you wanted to get beyond the voters of Tennessee in your political career, you had better move decidedly to the Left, which he did AFTER Perry supported him. These are just facts. You can run around later and claim that anybody could tell that algore was a phony. You are saying that after he moved way Left. That’s what proved his phoniness.
Does he come across to me as a phony?
Does now, but he didn’t always, but he did come across to me as a bit odd.
OH, I agree.........although I am partial to Rudy for cleaning up NYCity after Dinkins.
Look at it from whatever angle you like. I'm not displeased with my Governor for not attending.
This "separation of church and state" is one of the biggest frauds perpetuated on Americans today. It's been twisted and distorted. That doesn't bother you?
A major part of a President's duty is appointing people. If Slick Rick is so dumb that he thinks Algore, Rudy, and McCain are worthy of support, then he does not deserve to be President.
Algore in a nutshell.
