President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.
"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

What did they do before SS? In other words, the kids pitched in, or they moved in with one. Or they died. SS is an entitlement, and one that is not sustainable. There is no money. It was spent on things like the military, the Space Shuttle, and studies of the sexual habits of slugs. It is gone.
Disability goes out on the first. Retirement goes out on the third.
When it comes to SS older people turn into Van Jones types on here. ‘There’s plenty of money for it!’ suddenly starts cropping up. Eventually, they’ll scream just as loud as over on DU when it comes to supporting this socialist monster.
Sorry to say, I do not think this is their last gasp at all. They are PR-driven. They say whatever they want to be the truth, then wait for their illiterate true believers to believe it.
Look at Fast and Furious. They are making believe the scandal never surfaced, trusting that their moronic watchers of CNN will see black for white and white for black. They are just forging ahead with the gun restrictions that they planned before the scandal surfaced.
PR to the mindless, all the way.
Yes, we can try to spread the word. And be called mindless partisans of course. Orwell was a genius.
It is because most people don’t have anything to live on if they don’t work.
Somehow, we have the idea that after 65 an able bodied man doesn’t need to work and can be supported by others. That isn’t how it is done.
Just curious....do you think that when you dial their “office” that the phone actually rings in their office in the capitol?
They have phone banks set up just like any corporation. On a day like this, they have outsourced folks just to answer the phone, direct calls, and write down what you say into an online database that gets collated and summarized for the staff.
I am not saying its bad...but we are light years from Mr Smith goes to Washington.
You are being much too pessimistic. This is not 1995 all over again.
Comments on Politico and The Hill relative to this social security threat are uniformly 90% anti-Obama. Shockingly anti-Obama. These are left-wing web sites.
Also, look back at the omnibus spending bill that Reid tried to bulldoze through during the lame duck. The American people rose up, and it was defeated.
Not just work, but also they can’t save enough either.
I say cut off all SS for anyone that’s able. If they medically can’t work at any age over 18, give them even more than now. People with Cerebral Palsy and so on should not be forced to starve or die.
However, everyone getting a free ticket after x age is pretty anti-conservative imo. People will get just as addicted to obamacare and scream for it too.
They say a conservative is a liberal that’s been mugged. It appears a liberal is a conservative that turned 55.
Getting his evilness on
NASTY STINKIN’ SCOUNDREL!
That’s an asinine “reply”. What did I say that you would have dreamed up as even remotely ASKING FOR MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT?
Are you a plant from Democratic Underground? on SSI? Welfare?
I will be okay without my SSI, but, I still believe it is mine.
No on all 3. However, I’m still amazed at the people that go bonkers on a conservative forum about missing any government entitlements.
Can someone please help me understand this? Isn’t Social Security funded separately? I thought the SS fund had a large surplus right now sitting in Al Gore’s lockbox? Why would SS checks be in jeopardy?
You are right, of course, but I was thinking about a durbin or reid type senator - he could play on of them even with his background.
My old age money is mine
If SS was actually ‘your’ money you would be able to will it to your children, or to a charity, when you die, but you can’t. It isn’t ‘your’ money. Paying into SS is essentially paying dues to participate in a government run pyramid program. You will only get something out of it if those at the bottom of the pyramid keep paying into it.
If you and your spouse both work and pay into SS for 40 years, and then both retire, you will both receive SS. However, when unfortunately one of you dies, the remaining spouse gets to keep receiving only one SS check, and has to choose which one they will give up. If this was ‘your’ money, put away into your own investment account, you would be able to keep what both you and your spouse had put into that account, even when your spouse died. SS is in no way ‘your’ money.
