Unbelievable: TV Reporter Mocks Romney's Mormonism
Commentary ^ | July 7, 2011

Polls show there's an anti-Mormon bias among voters - especially Democrats, more than a quarter of whom say they wouldn't vote for a Mormon. But this video of a Memphis Fox affiliate ridiculing Mitt Romney about his religion is a real wake-up call [video]. The whole news segment appears to be about Mormonism and the 2012 election, but skip ahead to the 3:20 mark for the worst of it [video].

Worth a repost -

If one has no spiritual discernment, it is almost impossible to explain to them what it is and why it is so precious.

Many posters echo the ‘leave his religious beliefs out of this’. In bygone eras of this nation that would have been laughed at. Today, political correctness run amok becomes part of a strategery, to cower people into silence. It doesn’t prevent even the silenced folks from applying the lens of ‘religious values are a reflection of one’s ability to discern truth’, but it tends to stop opposition from exposing a major weakness in Mitt Romney, and that is perhaps the goal with these sorts of threads. After all, the political battle is said to be over the mushy middle, just the sorts of folks who will sit down and shut up when PC is waved at them.

The real question is it mocking when you ask the man on the street if they know one of the candidates believes if they are good enough that they will get their own planet.
It is a tenant of mormonISM. So how again is that mocking?

Our nation is currently at war against Terrorist Islam, an enemy that murders our citizens and soldiers at every opportunity. Islam hold all of its women in bondage. They continue to enslave others they deem beneath them. Islam is our priority at the moment.

You have an opportunity to proselytize and convert Mormons that you will never have with Islam.

All of the above sets a priority for us all.

By the way, why don’t you start a committee of Inquisition to examine candidates and make certain they fulfill your personal standards of religious acceptability.

Since temple Mormons believe they are divine -- "gods in embryo" is a fave term of their leaders -- I didn't know that simply not wanting to vote for someone who considers themselves "divine" = an "Inquisition" of "personal standards."

What is galling is the two-facedness of so many: If Hillary Clinton had claimed in the '08 election that she was a god; or if Obama had come right out & said, "I'm the next Messiah." Do you think FReepers would had let those comments go?

Yes? Do I have a yes or no out of you on that?

Well, since it's a rhetorical Q, anyway, allow me to answer as I would see 98% of FREEPERS: The answer is "no" -- 98% to 100% of FREEPERS would NOT let such comments go...even though they ranged into the "religious" realm.

Now, here we've getting pulpit sermons from you & others telling us, "Thou shalt not consider character as it is informed by their religion" -- yet if Obama came right out & used the word "Messiah" FREEPERS would suddenly be discussing a LOT about Obama's religion.

In fact, let's actually move it from the hypothetical to the actual.

Just about daily on FR, I see some reference to Obama's ties to Islam. No proof, mind you. Just religious innuendo. Day after day. It's great if people want to mention it; (it'd be greater if they could actually put up quotes & links that more directly ties him to Islam).

But you know what? Somehow the ad hoc "Committee to Hermetically Seal Religion from Politics" -- of which you are an apparent "member" in good standing -- doesn't mount your pulpit to point fingers @ such posters with your "Thou shalt not discuss Obama's Religious Ties" sermons.

In fact, we didn't see you or your fellow committee members give the sermons in '08 when Jeremiah Wright was all the rage on FR? Why not?

Doesn't this sound like rampant two-faced hypocrisy to you? What? You only defend Romney? Huntsman? But when the same "principle" applies to other candidates, you're mum? How inconsistent is that?

mormonISM is not Christianity.
The Biblical Jesus is eternal.
The mormonISM jesus is created.
The Biblical Jesus is sufficient for Salvation.
The mormonISM jesus is not sufficient IE after all we can do.
The Biblical Jesus paid the price on the Cross.
The mormonISM jesus is the garden.
mormonISM is not Christianity.

Asking several people about which candidate believes that if you are a good person, you can get your own planet
_____________________________________________

Well Mormons believe if a Mormon MALE is very very good, pays the club dues ofr 10% of everything he owns and acquires and is paid, and is a mormon temple worthy mormon, etc he will get his own planet

Plus a very large group of young virgins to help him populate it...the population are meant to worship him...

Now since that is a tenet of Mormonism....

and Williard Mitt Romney is a Mormon..

Wheres the mocking ???

If there was a question about who believed that God came to Earth and was born as a human baby and then grew up and was hung on a cross at age 33 and bleed and died there for the savation of all the world...the answer would be Christianity

and the candidate would be Gov SaraH Palin, Herman Cain or some other Bible believing Christian...

Would you consider that mocking ???

or is the religious flavor of the day, week, month and year gong to be Mormonism ???

There was plenty of discussion of Wright around here as I recall. I don’t recall specific posters but I do recall it coming up on many occasions. The big difference is that Romney is totally unqualified to be the Republican candidate by his record without ever mentioning his religion while Barry had no record, not even so much as his college transcripts to look at. So, there were fewer things you could point out when making an argument against him to that great mushy middle that ends up actually deciding elections. In the case of Barry, therefore, pointing out the outlandish and unChristian nature of the church he was a member of for so long was appropriate. What else could you show the mushy crowd that was on the record?

Mountain Meadows Massacre and the LDS teaching (never renounced) of Blood Atonement.

And, I’m sorry you can’t multitask.

Mormonism is the greater threat to souls, and to this country. A Mormon president would not help this country at all.

Even the Bible states that we should be more concerned with souls than our bodies. Mormonism is the greater threat to souls. At least Muslims aren’t pretending to be Christians. Or do you not believe the Bible?

New International Version (©1984) (Matt 10:28)
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

The first answer is that you don't try to tell people that Mormonism is off limits, the answer to the second question is that discussing it here at FR reverberates to the greater population and spreads knowledge and creates Christian activism, it even results in Mormons converting to Christianity, which has happened right here at freerepublic.

Well said.

I just wonder what these defenders of Romney's mormonism by demanding censorship on FR would say if THEY were the ones being told to "shut up". It's the same old, same old..."free speech for ME, but not for THEE".

I also note that Jim Robinson has said there will be NO support of Romney on FR...but this appears to be a back door effort to do exactly that, by painting Mitt as a "victim".

How about an exhaustive list of groups who claim to be Christian and you say are not.

- - - -

Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Science, Unitarian universalists, oneness Pentecostals (deny Trinity), Christian Identity Movement .

In short it comes down to something simple. All Christian churches agree on the basics, - the Trinity and the person work and nature of Jesus Christ (which includes Grace over works). The rest of things Christians fight over aren’t matters of Salvation.

Good point, well posed. Why can we not do both, point out the heresies in MormonISM and vigorously oppose the spread of Islam? Do you realize there is an implicit assumption in your posed scenario that conservative Mormons will not oppose Islam with us if we oppose the heresies in MormonISM? You’ve shifted the focus from pointing out the hereise in MormonISM to attacking Mormons—the individuals—and that is not the focus intended by many pointing out the heresies in MormonISM.

Um..are you familiar with Ministries to Islam? They are doing some great work and reaching many Muslims for Christ.

Now, the penalty for leaving Islam, in Muslim countries is death. Here the penalty is the same as leaving Mormonism - shunning, divorce, being ostracized by friends and family, and occasionally death (I went to BYU with a girl who was murdered by her brother for leaving Mormonism and converting to Evangelical Christianity).

Why can’t you mutli-task?

Ok, then any other candidate is safe from your starting issue with them being their religion, right? For anyone not a member of one of those groups you'll look at their record in office and their actions.

Of course, what about the churches who by doctrine say exactly what you claim is the minimum requirement but who allow homosexual marriage and appoint homosexuals to the ministry? Are people who are members in such a church or denomination disqualified even though they have a good conservative track record?

Then, you mention works parenthetically. As I understand it, Catholics believe we are saved by Grace alone and must respond with faith which is only shown by our works. Does that mean you agree with their doctrine sufficiently that you would vote for a solid conservative Catholic?

And what about those folks who are not part of any denomination? Do they need to fill out a theological questionnaire even if they've been a solid conservative for decades and have a track record to prove it?

I'm really sick of the fine people who meet all the appropriate religious criteria for the religion first crowd to vote them into office but in return do nothing about mass murder and the elimination of every Christian symbol that is an intrinsic part of this nation. It's time to judge people on their record and if they insist on going to Hell themself but help to turn the country around, so be it. Going after the single lost sheep is all well and good, but millions of sheep are being slaughtered every year and the tests the religion first folks have been applying haven't helped to stop it.

You post is a perfect example of why I take the positions that I do.

Your allegation that I am a perfect candidates for mormon conversion is asinine, ignorant, insulting and disgusting.

“..........if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

Cute cliche (a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought).

In my previous post I sincerely tried to be polite and cut this conversation off. Unfortunately, that approach failed to work with you, so I guess I need to be more direct.

Your high and mighty holier than thou attitude, insulting barbs and cheap shots, do tell me what kind of person you really are..... and I am not favorably impressed.

This was NOT a religion thread, but arguably it turned into one.

Now, you need to just shut up and move on. Go preach your crap to someone else, you are wasting you time with me.

Cheers.....
