I’ll do self-check out when they give me a W-2 and a paycheck...
I am so bad at those self check out things. I can manage it ok but it seems every time an item will come along that says see the human.
One time I just left the stuff in the bag and walked out. Left the stuff right where it was and never completed the check out.
Albertsons still in business?
I haven’t been inside ALbertson since 2003 strike I been going to Stater bros or NOrthgate markets LOL!
It’s really all about the packaging.
Stuff that comes in small plastic bags often is a scan fail.
Wegman’s never installed them so there is nothing to remove.
Most of the other local grocery stores have at least one lane as a self check-out.
I don’t care either way. If I have one or two items I will use the self units. More than that I go to a regular cashier.
Shop at Wegman’s for the selection of merchandise, not for the self-checkout or lack thereof.
There have been times when I have gone to Home Despot and the self check-outs where the only lanes open. So I went to Lowes.
Yep, I’ve had that experience. And when they break down, then you have to wander around looking for someone who works there to deal with it.
In our Albertson, the self-help system has a rather long delay from the time a product is scanned in and when it tells you to place the item in the bag. And if you place the item in the bag before the system tells you to, it says an unexpected item has been placed in the bag and to remove it. Then the system usually gets hung up, requiring a store employee to assist.
The Ralph’s self-help instructs the user to place the item in the bag almost immediately after scanning. It could be that Albertson’s has had too many complaints and possibly their system is older technology and they do not want to invest in an upgrade.
Some stores have removed them due to the amount of stealing that goes on. People going thru the self checkouts don’t always scan every item, I’ve seen it done time and time again and when I point out that I don’t think that item scanned properly I am told to go eff myself. I then mention that when the item doubles in price they have no one to blame but themselves. I have also gone to the service desk, store manager etc. and told them people are not scanning every item and I’m told they will “look into it”. After so many months of items being stolen the stores finally realize why it’s happening and eliminate the problem. Of course that doesn’t stop people from changing price tags..........a grocery store here lost over $27k in a month due to people switching price tags - they take dollar off tags from one item and put them on meat. Some clown tried to walk thru the register with 4 one dollar off tags on a piece of ny strip steak - cashier just about laughed in his face - and on top of it this clown was using food stamps.
Yep, you figure not everybody likes the self-checkout. So, it’s a trade-off. The stores save on labor costs, but will lose some customers as a result. The loss of customers and increased shoplifting have to be balanced against the savings in labor costs.
If the employees are quick and helpful, have a smile on their face, the prices at the store are acceptable and the employees want to be in a union, what is the problem?
Seriously, I don't get this. This is still a free country. People should be free to organize if they want. What is it to you? I don't hate my neighbor for belonging to a union. He makes good money, keeps his house looking nice, takes vacations with his family and spends a lot of time with his kids. Great kids.
Maybe you are right. It would be so much better if he was broke, his yard was a mess and his kids were the terror of the neighborhood.
Like most people, I prefer them when I just have a few things. But when I have a lot of stuff which might the scanner choke, I'll go to a human checker.
Yep - They have to pay an employee to monitor the things anyway, so what’s the damn point?
I’m with you.
Someone was telling us the other day about a Walmart in a lower income area that was seeing blatant theft going on through their self-checkouts, and the employees were helping the thieves.
Plus they want to reduce “walk aways”.
Funny, I think their selection is pretty bad. Like Lowes and Home Depot they have everything but only one brand of it. Their service and attitude are superior to all others (Giant (not bad), ACME (beyond sux)) in our area.
I'm trying to get my teenager to work there hoping the work ethic and happy attitude will rub off. :-)
I can’t decide if your post is more of a strawman or a false dichotomy.
Why would he be broke, his yard a mess and his kids terrors
if he weren’t in a union?
They are getting rid of them because now the union can hire more people to fill the new checkout positions.
Well here in Indiana, most stores have 1 “associate” monitoring / assisting at 4 self check lanes.
So if all 4 lanes were active, they would save theoretically 3 people.
As a retiree, I shop during the day when things aren’t very busy. I almost never see more than 1 or 2 people at the self check lanes. The actual savings may be minimal.
But in this environment, companies are doing everything they can to not hire people.
