The Obama administration is telling American automakers that it would like cars and light trucks to average 56.2 miles per gallon by 2025.
Government and industry sources familiar with the discussions say that's the number being floated by administration officials in the early rounds of negotiations on a 2017-2025 fuel economy standard.
The White House wants to boost fuel economy to reduce reliance on oil and cut down on global warming pollution.

Hey, dont knock that one! That gets 4000 miles to the gallon!
We must make all the roads downhill.
By Executive Order....
And the Laws of Friction. Don't forget Friction.
Without all these laws we'd be a lot better off. :)
Compact cars powered by direct-injected turbo Diesels are extremely efficient. This is why the EPA has essentailly banned them from import. The commielibs are not about increasing efficiency - they are all about increasing control.
Thery’ll always be rich people who don’t want tiny little death traps. The manufactures won’t even offer them as products anymore with cafe stds like that.
Not hard at all. America produced cars that boasted 30+ mpg over fifty year’s ago; but the manufacturer failed due to slow sales.
If mpg is your sole design objective, getting the numbers cited is relatively easy, but the end product won’t be very useful - or safe - in the American driving climate.
For decades snotty liberatti have complained american vehicles “didn’t get the same mileage as European ones”. This ignores america’s a great deal larger than all of europe, vehicles have to perform in all these conditions in order to be marketable, they have to be produced economically within the purchasing ability of a large population, and offer enough flexibility to go from commuter to family long-haul bus. >PS
LOL, well there’s no telling how many more there may be. The oldest is twelve now and the youngest is one and three are female.
I’m sure I will graduate from plenty of summer and school year day care to transport to ball games and band practices while their parents are still at work. In Ohio the driving age is 18 so I’ll be busy for a while.
If I could raise my van overhead in my fist I would say “From my cold, dead hand!”
In order to achieve 56.2 MPG(assuming gasoline)
would mean a vehicle with a curb weight of 1779 pounds
with ultra streamlining.Once a 200 pound driver enters to drive the MPG drop to 50.53.
Newton's second law: F = ma
100/cwt = mpg
Ask the administration when in history has increased efficiency reduced usage.
Never. Energy is power, people use all they can afford. The only thing that reduces demand/use is price.
Obama is either stupid and doesn't know this, or is depending on everyone else to be stupid.
Aerodynamics could possibly be improved. Also for some reason they never made a "hatch" version.
Light trucks were exempted from the CAFE for years, as only passenger cars were counted.
The switch to pickups and sport utility vehicles was a marketing ploy to accomplish two things: Hide the high cost of UAW benefits in a high cost product and circumvent the CAFE standards. (Its easier to stuff $3500 of health care costs in a $35,000 truck than a $9,000 compact). Remember, just before GM went under it had 100,000 emploees and 1,000,000 retirees.
The current standard is 27.5 mpg for passenger automobiles and 20.7 mpg for light trucks, a classification that also includes sport utility vehicles which are light trucks with passenger bodies.
So lobby Congress to change the rules and presto: fuel efficiency!
