AARP, the powerful lobbying group for older Americans, was dropping its long-standing opposition to cutting Social Security benefits, a move that could rock Washington's debate over how to revamp the nation's entitlement programs, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The decision, which AARP has not discussed publicly, came after a wrenching debate inside the organization. In 2005, the last time Social Security was debated, AARP led the effort to kill President George W. Bush's plan for partial privatization. AARP now concludes that change is inevitable, and it wants to be at the table to try to minimize the pain.

I enjoy placing a brick into a large brown envelope, taping the AARP first class return envelope on it, wrapping it securely with clear packaging tape, and dropping in a mailbox.
Hey, why not load up the return postage free envelope with all your extra unwanted junk mail and send it back? They have to pay the postage. 2 birds one stone.
AARP - always take the credit but never take the blame. Where have I seen that before? Oh, yeah, everywhere.
Depends on what they mean by "change". Obama ran on a platform of change, and you can see where that's gotten us so far.
The decision, which AARP has not discussed publicly, came after a wrenching debate inside the organization.Yeah and that 'debate' was prolly about the Millions of AARP members who've canceled their membership since AARP became a spokesmen for the DNC. And all that MONEY they've lost because of it.
I dropped my membership, or actually I failed to renew around 2002(1)(2). Yet they STILL keep sending me Renewal Letters & Cards - 'Renew now and save $xx.xx'. It goes right in the trash and the 'New Card(s)' into the shredder. One would think that after Nine Years they'd get the message.
(1) I had a Three Year membership.
(2) I only joined when I hit 50 for the 10% Hotel-Motel Discount. But also I had a AAA Card then and they have a similar discount. So screw AARP.
I'll tell you how - they've had the government STEAL a portion of their paycheck every week for the past 40+ years with the promise that they'd get it back. Now, they want it back because the government owes them. Above all the welfare queens, food-stamp drones, "earned income credit" bums, psuedo-disabled scammers, and the rest of the liberal freeloaders that never paid a penny into the system, they should get first dibs. When the government cuts off the welfare gravy train, then they can start talking about how to deal with SS.
the welfare gravy train is schedule for a major derailment.
The only question is when. The sooner the better.
...and speaking of stealing, it isn’t just SS, we are being fleeced faster than we can keep track of the fleecing. We certainly don’t have any control over it, which speaks volumes about government “of the people”.
AARP receives waiver from ObamaCare
I tell you what, the AARP is becoming one of the most sleaziest organizations in the US today. AARP, go to Hell!
my husbands' family to be specific....his father, the oldest, basically was in the army just as WW2 ended....his younger brothers were never in, never in viet nam.....
you have a whole lot of older people on benefits now who never served in the military let alone a war....

One has to be deaf, dumb, blind, ignorant, stupid, arrogant, and just plain divorced from reality, to ignore the lessons of time, regardless of whether they had direct, or indirect influence in ones life.
As the saying goes, ignore history at your peril.
What does an easy existence and benefits have to do with recognition of reality. The country is broke and going broker at the speed of light. We either seek, suggest, produce, and/or demand the hard solutions, or go down with the ship.
As an investment it is a total rip-off for the individual participant. Should I die in 2032 at 84, the fund in the "lock box" would grow to $681,739, even after all the "benefit" payouts, a fund the government gets to keep. No sane person would voluntarily participate in such a scheme.
