Jerry Brown retreats from hard line against 'gimmicks' budget

Throughout the year, Gov. Jerry Brown has insisted he will not sign a budget balanced with non-tax, onetime revenues - often dubbed "gimmicks." But he left open the possibility Monday he would do just that if majority Democrats send him such a budget.

"That's a very good question," Brown said when asked about signing a non-tax revenue budget at a Capitol press conference. "I will take a very hard look at it. We've had discussions with the leadership, and I've told them the way I see things, and we'll see what happens when they bring it down."

Previously, Brown has stressed there were only two choices - a budget that relies on taxes to close the remaining $9.6 billion deficit or devastating cuts to schools and public safety. He tried to make that point Monday with about two dozen backers standing behind him. Still, he did not dismiss the gimmicks possibility as he has on previous occasions.

Any budget, including another "smoke & mirrors" budget, passed by this Wednesday, will be enough to keep the legislators' paychecks rolling in.

All I can say to conservative Californians is, please move out and distribute yourselves in places like Nevada, Texas, Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia. Since basketcase California is basically ruined, we could really use your help in shoring up the useful populations in places not entirely overrun yet.

Less that three weeks to go before we pack up the U-Haul and head east to Colorado. We're bringing two strong red votes with us, and we'll do our part to turn Colorado back from purple to solid red.

The added benefit of all the conservatives leaving CA is that it will remove several Congressional seats and electoral votes from the Democrats’ iron fist.

At this point, it doesn’t matter what he does. What matters is what he did in 1980.

Just as soon as I retire! Virginia is my likely retirement home, maybe eastern Tennessee.
