Paging Rick Perry: How a Southerner Could Sweep to the G.O.P. Nomination (getting into the weeds)
New York Times ^ | May 18, 2011 | Nate Silver's Political Calculus

Posted on 06/11/2011 12:05:03 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

MAY 18, 2011 - Being a Southerner conveys certain advantages upon a Republican presidential candidate.

Since 1980, a Southerner has finished first or second in every Iowa Republican presidential caucus.

[snip]

The White House has been occupied by a Southerner — counting the Massachusetts-born and decidedly patrician George H.W. Bush, who resided in Texas at the time he ran for office — in 30 of the past 46 years. I’m not sure this is entirely a coincidence....

[snip]

If a candidate dominates the South — and it’s much easier for a Southern candidate to do that — he’ll have made a lot of headway into winning the votes and delegates that he’ll need to secure his party’s nomination.... a candidate like Mr. Perry, who would have advantages like fundraising and establishment support that would extend to all corners of the country, ...doing very well in the South and still well enough outside of it to win his party’s nomination.

For a Republican candidate, in fact, this advantage may be especially powerful because of a demographic quirk related to Iowa, the first and most important state in the nominating process. Some 60 percent of Iowa Republican voters are born-again Christians — about the same fraction as in many Southern states....

......He’d stand a good chance at doing well in Iowa, and if he did, he’d probably follow it up with a win in South Carolina, and possibly also Florida. And then he’d pick up plenty of delegates in the Southern states that voted on Super Tuesday and beyond — including of course Texas, which itself accounts for 140 delegates.

So don’t sell the Southern Republicans short yet — the advantages the primary system offers to candidates like Mr. Perry could be more than enough to make up for a late start.

I have a big problem with Nate Silver (the author) and his characterization of Rick Perry and Texas as a part of the South region of the US. Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona are the Southwest. The SW states have a completely different heritage, history, geography, economy and and both historical and contemporary political drivers than the South.

If Mr. Silver can't get these fundamentals right, I doubt if he can get much of anything right. I demand that Nate Silver release his school transcripts from elementary through high school to prove he really took (and passed) some US history, geography and state history classes. Or maybe his formative education was limited to NYT crap.

As an Okie, I find Mr. Silver's premise flawed from the start and insulting.

Nobody has to simply “ claim “ anything”.

The TTC land grab plan for foreign crony owned gas stations and industrial parks along the proposed route meets the definition.of socialism.

There is no requirement for other posters to teach you English. It is not surprising you don’t know English well, since you are stumping for one of the La Raza water carriers on a rightwing site.

“Perry lurks to the rino side until election time , then he talks all tough and conservative. He’s a finger in the wind politician who can’t be trusted.”

Isn’t it something how the lame stream media keep pushing these RINOs?

I agree with what you said. Rick Perry is like a snake in the grass. I don’t trust him. He’s another bush type. He talked a big game, then got in and threw us conservatives a few bones. Then was cozy buddy buddy with the liberals passing liberal laws and giving us junk like the patriot act, etc. No more RINOs! People, don’t fall for the deceit.

Those folks can be brutal and are as much leeches on the taxpayer as anyone.

Yes, BUT, their brutality is always reserved for other Republicans, never the Democrat majority they seek to court and fail to convince.

It seems certain to me that our little Republican primary voters are incapable of separating the wheat from the chaff or the real thing from the RINO. We will lose again out of the ignorance of our own primary voters.

You need to quit listening to bovine secretions and do some research...Perry is only a RINO to a vocal minority who would call anyone a RINO except Adolph Hitler!

And you need to stop telling me what to do, and take your Adolf Hitler and shove it up your @$$.

What part of "I HEARD" don't you understand? This is called "conversation"...give and take, pass and re-pass...DISCUSSION.

If anyone is acting like Hitler here, it's you trying to dictate what others on the board say, or think.

Texas has created more jobs than all the other 56 states...

You are right. TEXAS created those jobs, not Perry. Please, for the love of God, do not make Perry into some sort of superman. For those of us that have lived here and followed his career from democrat legislator forward, we all know what he is. He has NEVER been a principled Conservative LEADER. He is the Texas version of a RINO - definitely more to the right than a Romney or Pawlenty. He is a political opportunist of the first order. If there had been a competent Conservative to run against him, you would have never heard of him.

Is he better than Pawlenty, Romney and all the rest of the crumbs the GOP establishment is tossing our way, yes! But there is no passion, even in Texas, for Perry except within the Anybody But Palin Cult. Before the GOP insiders started whispering sweet nothings in his ear, was there anyone in Texas creating web sites begging him to run? Has there been any grassroots effort on behalf of Perry in Texas or elsewhere? No! That SHOULD tell you something.

Besides, shouldn't he take two years off to "bone up" on policy? Or is that required only of female candidates.

Lady, you speak with much wisdom. Rick Perry is exactly what America needs. Sarah Palin is exactly what America needs and I think that Allen West and Herman Cain is exactly what America needs.. The rest are just eastern yankee favorite “jackwads”

Meanwhile,Texas is about the best off economically state in the nation by several measures.

The corridor is a good thing, good for the country and very good for business. I have no opinion on the guardasil thing but It seems to be like DPT, Polio and other such.

I hear he was a Democrat. I would guess he was a conservative, give m hell Zell type

I still favor Sarah with Cain a very very close second but

"Go sit in the corner...you are either drunk or win the dumbass of the year award....."

I was going to suggest you do the same.

Perry's a RiNO. Another big spender (and former dem) with an R next to his name. The establishment is begging him to run because it's becoming obvious Romney doesn't have the votes to win the nomination and they need someone who can peel away votes from conservative candidates in states where evangelicals are the most influential voting bloc. Perry himself has a snowball's chance in hell of winning the nomination.

If you are claiming Perry is a conservative, then I don't think that word means what you think it does.

How is it that someone from Colorado, being the socialist leaning state that it is...finds time to be so critical of a Texas Governor.. Seems to me you need to worry about the dumbcrats that you elect....and not worry about RINO’s that you falsely label here in Texas. You do in fact win the dumbass of the year award for getting into an argument that you are ill prepared to debate with any intellectual power..

The team the Pubs finally pick will surely have one southerner on it , top or bottom. The Pubs need to get back all 11 states of the South. I can see Perry on the ticket , top or bottom. He is a Center Right guy who will surely have borders, jobs, oil drilling in his platform as well as abolishing regs for farmers via the EPA. We shall see.
