CBS News Reporter Criticizes Michelle Obama for Wearing $7,000 Designer Gown in 'Poor Economy'

On the day a poll showed Barack Obama owning the failing economic recovery, a CBS News Washington Bureau reporter questioned Michelle Obama's judgment in wearing a $7,000 gown at tonight's state dinner for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, noting that other guests "dressed more modestly."

Writing on Twitter, CBS News reporter Christine Delargy said:

Gowns by Michelle designer Naeem Khan retail avg of $7,000. Good, bad image for Obama in poor economy? Most din guests dressed more modestly 30 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

In a previous Tweet, Delargy noted her fashion expertise:

Michelle in Naeem Khan tonight. Wore same designer @ 1st state din for Indian PM. @markknoller has record of everything else. I have fashion about 1 hour ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

There is another post from someone saying they think her dresses are borrowed. I bet anything they’re correct. This dress is too long and does not fit her correctly. She should got to Ross Dress for Less and find something more flattering that she can afford.

Why the designer made the dress too long for her, is beyond me.
She shouldn’t have to keep picking it up just to walk.

Scritch, scritch, scritch.

If they start riping Obama and Michelle’s arragance and elitism...it’s going to get ugly.

This is one of her better looks but the $7K price is more of the tone deafness we've come to expect from this White House. The trips, the food, the dresses, 'high gas prices? buy a new car'... all things that would be wall-to-wall coverage of a Republican administration in difficult economic times. We saw how they were used against the Reagans.

I can't understand the dress length or her insistence on extremely high heels. Much of the time they make her even taller than him and together they dwarf their distinguished company at these events. It's bizarre and a bit pathological.

Looks like Moochelle is trying for a Whitney Houston look. It doesn’t work.

Surprise, surprise! Why doesn’t the CBS reporter note the $7000 gowns of Congresscritters and politically engaged Hollyweird stars. This is not to defend Mooshell, but to expose the selective outrage of these MSM parasites.

I don’t care what she spends on her clothes, and I don’t much mind the way she looks, but just once it would be a relief to see the First Lady looking like a First Lady.

“Wore same designer @ 1st state din for Indian PM.”

What’s wrong with that? Whenever I wear a suit (about once a year), I wear the same Robert Hall suit I wore 40 years ago (albeit after several waistline enlargements). I was going to buy a new one a couple of years ago, but there was no Robert Hall store in my neighborhood.

I’m ecstatic that FR might create a fashion forum./s

It’s not like the gowns cost anything, anyway. They’re loaned by the designer for the publicity.

Typically they are, if you’re a movie star. Mooshelle keeps hers because she’s worn a few of them 2x. We paid for that dress - not them.

OMG - from the back Michelle’s dress looks like two babies fighting under a blanket.

What no bare armpits during daylight? Says who? She was well dressed.

Etiquette rules followed by most of corporate America and most of government-employed America, dictate the covering of armpits (if for nothing else than to absorb sweat) for highly formal daytime business events, such as welcoming foreign visitors - 'friends' or not. Other widely-held American etiquette rules pertain to the wearing of panty hose for women and ties for men as well as various rules concerning daytime footwear, acceptable haircolors for a business environment, etc. Michelle wore a nicely designed dress, but, with the sparkly platform heels, the outfit was more appropriate for a garden party or casual cocktail party, not a formal daytime reception. If Michelle means to be seen as a reflection of America, dressing up in princess gowns and strappy shoes to greet a very dynamic business-minded and down-to-earth Merkel isn't quite the message the American people want to project to the world.

She has to pick it up so she doesn't step in the bull shiite her husband continually spews.

"What’s wrong with that? Whenever I wear a suit (about once a year), I wear the same Robert Hall suit I wore 40 years ago ..."

I think you misunderstood the comment. She didn't wear the same dress that she wore at the state dinner they held for the Indian PM in Nov. of 2009. The Kahn dress she wore at the first dinner was a strapless. The dress in this recent picture is a new dress by the same designer.
