Gov. Haley Barbour issued a warning to social conservatives in choosing their Republican nominee for 2012: “Purity is the enemy of victory.”
“Remember purity in politics, purity is the enemy of victory,” Barbour said. “We can’t start out with the idea out as the Faith & Freedom Coalition that our candidate’s got to agree with me on every single thing. We cannot expect our candidate to be pure. Winning is about unity. Winning is about us sticking together to achieve the main thing.”
“Conservatives, religious people, small government people, we are not going to have purity. We’re not going to have a perfect candidate,” Barbour said. “There’s only been one perfect person that ever walked on this earth. And there ain’t gonna be another one in this election.”

Bummer. Man, and I like Haley. There is no reason for Barbour to say this unless he is planning to back one of the establishment squishes - Romney, Rooty or Newt. NO SALE.
We will accept only non-perfect, non-establishment conservatives like: Palin, Cain, Bachmann, West, DeMint ...
So, this time, why don’t the “Moderates” compromise, reach across the aisle, come together, “all get along with” social conservatives and support Palin or Cain or some other social conservative?

And forget about the homosexuals. They are a one issue group and will never vote against that one issue. Let the Democrats have those votes.

Agreed. I’m not a Palin fan, in fact, I can barely stand her. Helping McCain win in AZ doesn’t help either. I’m ready to vote for her if she gets the nom. I like Cain the most I think. I will NOT vote for Mit.
There could be a big difference in the position you hold and the conservative agenda.
For instance, if a candidate is 100% for the conservative agenda, but doesn’t care one bit about gay marriage, does that person get your vote?
This is the problem, we as conservatives face. We don’t negotiate away our beliefs and we aren’t supposed to. A candidate has a choice, be a conservative or be a liberal. The voters have a choice, don’t vote for right vs left, vote for right vs wrong.

I know Barbour’s gonna be slammed for this, but he’s right. There’s only one person out there whom I will 100% agree with on every issue, every time, but I’m not running.
A vote for anyone other than yourself is a compromise. The question becomes how much of a compromise are you willing to make, and on what issues are you unwilling (or at least, less willing) to yield?
To a large degree, character counts more than policy. There is, of course, a large overlap between the two, as certain policy positions betray a lack of character. On the other hand, I would rather have someone in office who I can trust to make the “big decision” if and when it is necessary rather than someone who has ideological purity on paper. In an ideal world, I get both, but in our non-ideal world I have to prioritize.
As an example, looking at the declared and/or potential 2012 GOP Presidential field, I’m quite sure I can point out a handful of policy positions I disagree on with every single candidate. I could probably also come with 5 (without even trying hard) solid negatives on each one that they would need to overcome. But one of them is going to be the nominee, and I’m going to have to support and vote for one of them in the primaries. (It’s no secret that I currently prefer Palin, but we’re still 7 months out from the first votes being cast, and a lot can change between now and then.)
I will make that compromise, because holding out for perfection means waiting a long, long time.
The big push to stick with the status quo of mediocrity in “our” politicians. I’m fed up with that and have been for awhile.
I refuse to vote for anyone who has or will not act like a fiscal conservative or who plays the role of the Statist.
You can see it on several thousand FR threads. So-and-so is supposedly wishy-washy on abortion, or immigration, or unions, or gay marriage, or China, or whatever.... "He's a RINO, and he'll never get my vote."

Barbour is right. But I don't expect many folks on this thread to admit it.
He’s right if he’s talking about someone other than Rudy, Mit, or Newt, or Rhino #4, #5, etc.
The Republican party platform, like our constitution, is a pro-life, pro-family, pro-small government, pro-defense, pro-liberty platform. Haley Barbour and his ilk would be wise to support all of these traditional conservative positions as President Ronald Reagan did. They swept Reagan to victory and they’ll sweep the next conservative Republican to victory. Our war is against the evil policies of the godless, liberty-hating liberals, socialists and Marxists. We don’t achieve victory by bringing one of them into power simply because he is a Republican. Victory can only be achieved when we elect a trustworthy traditional conservative to the presidency, backed by a conservative congress and conservative majorities in the states. Only then will we begin seeing a reversal of the socialism and big government brought on by the liberals and moderates (RINOs).
Anything less is NO victory! Striving for anything less is surrender!!

I don’t need purity. I do need someone who won’t spit in my face and say my concerns are stupid.
And I would strongly prefer someone with a consistent philosophy, with the right instincts, rather than someone who can always find an excuse to screw me.
