Krauthammer: Palin "Not Schooled" In Policy; Doesn't Know She Needs It
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 1, 2011 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 06/01/2011 9:43:57 AM PDT by Rennes Templar

FOX News contributor Charles Krauthammer gives his take on what a "Washington establishment elitist" thinks of a potential Sarah Palin run for the presidency. In self-deprecating fashion, Krauthammer says he wears Palin's "hoity-toity" comment as a badge of honor.

"She is very smart and adept. Great political instincts and is a star. The problem with her, I think, is that she is not schooled. I don't mean she didn't go to the right schools. I mean when you get into policy, beyond instincts -- I like her political instincts, I like her political overall view of the world -- but when it comes to policy, she had two-and-a-half years to school herself and she hasn't and that's a problem," Charles Krauthammer told Bill O'Reilly on Tuesday. "It's not only the lack of schooling, it's the lack of effort to school herself and the lack of insight to see that she needs it."

I’d like Chuck to say that in person to Sarah and watch as she bitch slaps him across his smug mug. These over-education elitists (Republicans and Democrats) are one big reason we’re in this fix to begin with.

The intellectual elite always deprecate those who they opine don’t have the IQ to govern. They slammed Reagan.

On the other hand, those same intellectuals seldom can get elected to dog-catcher.

You can hire policy wonks. Finding people who can actually move the electorate isn’t so easy. Leadership and character are not necessarily trumped by IQ.

Good summary. “Schooling” is how people learn to go along with what they know is wrong, in order to avoid punishment or ridicule. It’s how they come to believe that professing the “right” sentiments is more important than the real-world outcomes of real-world actions. It’s where people begin pretending they don’t notice inconsistency and hypocrisy, calling red, green and blue, orange ... irrespective of what they really see ... and being unwilling to say “black” and “white” and “niggardly” and “negate,” because that’s Racist ...

Somehow, Sarah has failed to fall for all of this, God bless her.

>>You have to be able to surround yourself with excellent people AND know enough to know when they are giving you excellent advice.<<

I agree. How would Palin stack up against Urkel, or Bush, or Clinton, or Bush?

John Wayne with Lipstick: The Axe Wielding Natural

"...she's more macho than Biden and more feminine than Obama....If you don't think castration anxiety is real, just watch the reaction of the media elites as they instinctively cross their legs." It happens only every time Palin opens her mouth.

Yes, I do think that this trip is Presidential, and is one of the finest ideas anyone has thought of o date. She’s reminding Americans, many of whom need a nudge after all the years of trashing, about just how majestic and unique our country is. And, how far we have drifted from its founding.
As for DWTS, she’s a loving mom. Her daughter comes first, and she’s unashamed of showing that she is proud of her family. Bob

I think he means that Sarah hasn’t devoted herself to understand policy issues since the election. Not sure what evidence he has for this assertion.

My thoughts as well. I thought he was offering fair criticism but O'Reilly never pushed him for specifics. What makes Kraut think she's as "green" (new to the game) as in '08?

She probably has been reading every top policy adviser's written account on the subject.

Probably being the key word. Right now, we do not know and she is not coming across as having done so.

My hope is that she runs for the Senate in Az. and uses that has a stepping stone. She is certainly young enough to serve two terms in the Senate and still run for President in the future.

“Ultimately, a civilized society must disarm its citizenry if it is to have a modicum of domestic tranquility of the kind enjoyed by sister democracies such as Canada and Britain. Given the frontier history and individualist ideology of the United States, however, this will not come easily. It certainly cannot be done radically. It will probably take one, maybe two generations. It might be 50 years before the United States gets to where Britain is today. Passing a law like the assault weapons ban is a symbolic - purely symbolic - move in that direction. Its only real justification is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.” - Charles Krauthammer, “Disarm the Citizenry,” The Washington Post, Friday, April 5, 1996, page A19

What evidence indeed? The evidence—based on Palin’s interviews, Facebook postings, and even her tweets— is that she is savvy-policy-wise and taking on more schooling in policy very well.

Doctor Krauthammer sounds like some vapid sports fan boy calling into a late-night sports-talk show here.

Besides what does “policy” mean? It’s a big, huge and weak word, like “love”. Or “hope”. Or “change”. What’s does the good Doctor K mean when he says “policy”? Policy in regards to what?

I think that most Washington insiders, though they are corrupt as all get, have that understanding.

I also think that one’s personal values is the most important thing to take with you when you are elected. Everything else stems from that.

Charles should know that he has lost all credibility with this family. I think now he thinks he is more than he is or ever was.

He apparently has extremely thin skin as well. Apparently Kranky can dish it but can’t take. Perhaps he will give an example of her lack of education as she goes to all of America’s historical sites.

He gave an example of her mixing up Revelutionary war battles and it was Bachmann’s gaffs, perhaps Kraut should have done more studying before he fired off his mouth?

The hatred of the Country Club is worse than the DNC.

And the Great Pumpkin shall rise from the pumpkin patch and shall smite our enemies. If she runs then everyone will finally see the error of their ways. What? Did I say “if”? Gulp. One little slip like that and we'll have to stroke our principles for 4 more years.

Well, you would have a stronger argument if you weren't building it on an idea that Krauthammer has specifically ruled out.

You: Charles, you pompous Fox bureaucrat. Ronald Reagan was "schooled" at Eureka College.

Krauthammer: I don't mean she didn't go to the right schools.

You responded as if Krauthammer said she's a dumbass because she has a bachelors from a state school in Idaho when in fact HE SAID THE EXACT OPPOSITE, not only in the part I quoted above but when he also said she is "very smart and adept," has "[g]reat political instincts" and he likes her instincts and worldview.

So, did you even read the bloody article before you posted it? And is this the crap we'll have to put up with all the way to the nomination or Election Day, threads freaking out that anyone dared criticize our queen? Is this where conservatism is now?

Any governor, unless they have gone to the governorship after serving in several high-level federal posts, is going to need to study some issues before they run for President if only to match up data with their principles. For example, if Mitch Daniels had decided to run he would have needed to make sure he had foreign policy briefings out the yang and expect sweet little Katie Couric to ask him who the current defense minister of Chad is. Same thing with Rick Perry...if he gts in he'd better not let "well, we border Mexico" leave his lips; no one will take that seriously and will be desperate to trip him up one some fine point of IMF policy or what Muslim sect believes what. That's just reality.

And you know what? Reagan had been studying those issues for years before his hat went in the Presidential ring.

Moreover, after watching Palin's interview with Greta last night, I have to say that Kraut may be on to something. What I heard from her was a lot of repeated talking points. Good talking points, but few and repeated ad nauseum. I heard her going back to script time and again at a point when a Herman Cain or a Paul Ryan would have been attacking the same subject from a completely new direction. Maybe part of that was that the interviewer was one of the most friendly to her on the planet so she didn't feel the need to be as tough as she would be with a Kouric type, but I came away worried.

A few months ago, Sarah did a “bless his heart” on Charles. I think Sarah is the one doing the schooling.

While I generally agree with your sentiments about Krauthammer, I think John McCain was John McCain’s worst enemy in 2008.

Bears repeating.
