I heard that Macs are better as far as viruses. Is there a reputable dealer that sells Macs?

The problem is not with your operating system, but with your brain for installing a program based upon an unsolicited pop up that kept pushing itself on you.

Your second mistake was not setting Internet Explorer to block pop-ups.

Your third mistake was relying upon free-ware like Adaware and AVG for virus/malware protection rather than paying for Norton Internet Security or a similar program. In fact, we used AVG at my office for about a year on every computer, except for mine, because my former IT person said it was cheap and worked just as good as the more expensive programs. AVG failed to detect three major virus/malware attacks that started on one computerand then spread to the others. In contrast, I had installed Norton Internet Security 2010 on my desktop and it detected and blocked all three of the viruses/malware that AVG missed.

“Safe Mode” is you computer operating in stripped down mode just using essentials. So stripped that the virus or Trojan has no effect (hopefully) You fix your computer then bot into normal mode

To get into SM you tap F8 as computer is booting up

With the problems you have stated, the only thing to do is do a complete “clean” reinstall of the Operating System.
Do you have a reinstall disk? These were provided by the manufacturer once upon a time, not so much any more.
If not even with buying a copy of the Windows you may have to search and install drivers.
What is the make and model # of your computer?
I would be wary of taking computer to some tech places, not knowing what some geek might install on the computer of unsuspecting customers.
I wouldn’t bother with all the install this and run this program, your computer needs a new install of the OS.

I had Drudge’s site open a couple days ago and got hit by a Trojan. Thankfully, my different detectors nabbed it. Notify Drudge anytime it happens. He won’t want his site becoming known for it.

I want to thank you for that very astute piece of advice. My company is in the process of buying me a new computer, and after reading your post I think that's exactly what I'm going to do with the old one.

The only problem here is that I'll need some more desk space, since they use separate docking stations that aren't compatible.

I’m on a MAC and the EXACT same thing happened to me when I tried to open Drudge. Took over everything and I could do NOTHING. EXCEPT use option/apple/escape. And it worked to rid my frozen computer of this crap. LUCKILY, I had hours before read that this kind of thing was happening, so I didn’t break down and hit “ok” when the pop up occurred. THANKS to FREEPERS who got the word out!

Hold on kiddo. I have freely admitted that computers are not my thing. I take full responsibility for clicking on a link that mimicked Adobe....considering that it said it was and Adobe link.

Everything on my computer is set to prevent pop ups. Everything.

You may have a point about AdAware & AVG, but these were programs recommended to me. I have no aversion to paying for a good program.

My son had Norton on his computer; he subscribed and kept it updated. And then he had to throw out his computer and get another one. And then he told me not to spend one dime on Norton’s.

I appreciate your input.

I know what you are talking about. My nephew uses the pay version of Sugar Sync so hopefully they are making a profit and staying in business. He pays and gets 50gb online storage. It is like Carbonite which advertises heavily on Limbaugh
Twice I have instructed over the phone how he can reformat his Dell laptop. He reformatted and has all his “essentials” in the Sugar Synch cloud so no sweat.
In college he is often using the public computers so he always has access to his stuff

I use free Sugar Sync and get 5gb

If you were tricked into loading the virus, a Mac may not protect you. My wife almost got tricked into loading malware onto her Mac a few weeks ago.

Yes, I allowed myself to be tricked.

I had an Adobe file already opened in another window. I had no reason to believe it wasn’t genuine. I assumed it was an update to make the text in the window more friendly to the eye.

I was wrong. And it didn’t take me long to find out.

It must be an Obamulan cyber attack. They hate Drudge because he links to stories and information that they do not authorize for widespread use by their agents in the MSM.

Two years ago, I purchased a MAC - no anti-virus software necessary.

Sorry, NYer, but that's not true. Any computer NEEDS anti-virus software. The reason Windows based PCs are hit by viruses more often is because the majority of computer users are Windows users. Macs are not immune ... there's just not that many people bothering to write viruses for them. But that is increasing along with the increasing popularity of Macs.

I got a nasty virus from a Drudge Report article not too long ago.

I had no idea how to get rid of it so I just went and restarted my computer from day 1.

I lost everything (had pics on an external hard drive), but it did get rid of the virus.
