"It is a big distraction, because my phone's been ringing off the hook since she announced it," Ted Shpak, legislative director for Rolling Thunder, the group that hosts the annual rally in support of American POWs and veterans, told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell in an interview Friday. Shpak implied that Palin's presence would detract from the event's focus.

"We're not political, this is not a political event," Shpak said. "The way it came out, it sounded like we endorsed her."

Though Palin will reportedly make Sunday's rally the first stop in her bus tour, Shpak was clear that her bus will not ride in the group of motorcycles that will travel from a near the Pentagon, along the National Mall, and back.

Organizers of Rolling Thunder say their guest speakers are Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Palin's representatives say they were invited to Rolling Thunder - by a former board member who is emceeing the event.

Mike DePaulo tells NBC News he had a standing offer for her to ride with them from the Pentagon across the bridge to D.C. - and that he got a call from what he called "the Palin campaign" on Wednesday to see if they could take him up on it. He coordinated it with a friend of his, Joe Fields, of the Alaska Veterans' Advisory Council, who had worked with Palin when she was governor.

A spokeswoman for Rolling Thunder says they frequently invite celebrity guests to ride with them.

DePaulo says he has a permit for the Palin bus to be parked on Henry Bacon Drive near the Lincoln Memorial. He acknowledges he didnt tell current leaders of the organization that she was coming, since they were already on the road.

“Before anyone jumps on Ted Shpak, he’s a good guy. I know him and have worked with him in the past. Rolling Thunder is a 501c3 and must stay out of electoral politics.”

Getting on PSMSNBC with that twit Andrea Mitchell to make his cheap shot against Palin belies your defense of him.

Right, don.

The problem here is not the Rolling Thunder. It’s not Sarah Palin.

It’s us falling once again for a media story and over-reacting.

It’s not political yet they show up at the White House each year and demand that more be done by the government to find their brothers, missing overseas. They can’t buy this publicity. They should just be happy that anyone cares about their loud bikes after all these years.

That maybe the addition of the security required for such a person might be a distraction to their goals?

Are you making a statement of fact or just speculating?

Are you making a statement of fact or just speculating?

This whole issue was resolved downthread, but since you asked...

It's a fact. A cold hard fact. Irrefutable in it's coldness and hardness.

Whatcha gonna do about it?

Regardless of Palin’s political agenda — the “Will she or won’t she?” fervor over her potential presidential run reached new heights this week — the members of Rolling Thunder agreed her participation is a boon. “If she wants to support the troops, we’re all for it,” said Greg Benson, president of Rhode Island’s Rolling Thunder chapter.

So what is it, was she invited or wasn't she? Is she welcome or isn't she? If she's not welcome, and I repeat, if she's not welcome, then screw the costumed clowns...............

If she's not welcome, and I repeat, if she's not welcome, then screw the costumed clowns.

So if a bunch of Maasai were having a wedding in Africa
and failed to invite her, she should just be able to show
up and run the show? Because SHE says so?

As I stated, this issue has been resolved, there was a miscommunication.

You, however, seem to want to gun down the Maasai for their insolence.

Please try to remember that she is not a saint or a savior.

Sarah Palin is the only person who supports Christian virtues and lives them? Did her daughter live them when she had a child out of wedlock? This is precisely why I'm not a huge Palin fan - because her supporters treat her with this messianic quality. Just like the Obama Zombies did in 2008.

It just seemed to me, upthread, that folks were a bit quick to slam the bikers and anoint Mrs. Palin as eternally sinless.

she's the best thing since Reagan.

I do not see her as a deity but I do think that God has chosen her for his agent. Alrighty then.

Thru the ages God does choose beautiful and courageous women for His purposes from time to time.
