China's military is urging land attacks on Somali pirate strongholds in a bold call signalling the armed forces' growing assertiveness.
China's navy has taken part in anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since December 2008, but the government has not advocated direct attacks on land areas from which pirates operate.
However, at a news conference in Washington on Wednesday, General Chen Bingde said he believes land bases must be attacked in order for counter-piracy campaigns to be effective.
The US and other countries taking part in the patrols have steered clear of land attacks for fear of becoming mired in ongoing campaigns in Somalia - a lawless nation where 18 US servicemen were killed in the capital, Mogadishu, in 1993.
Duh. I'd suggest a boat free zone along the Somalia coast for 40 years of so (2 generations).
I guess the big trick is to do it with minimum risk to hostages. Still, the sooner it is done the better to put an end to it all.
Who would have thought that China would be the leader of the free world so soon? But we are a third world country now and can only stand by and watch as the torch is passed.
We know exactly where they live. We don’t need any land forces to take then out and destroy their homes.
Take the Missourri out of mothballs in Hawaii and clear a path 25 miles inland with her 16 inch guns.
Stupid! Just arm the ships and let them defend themselves. Why launch a land war that will sweep in all kinds of civilians who aren’t even involved in piracy? Most Somalis do not know or care anything about what is happening at sea.
If China can pull this off I might be impressed. If not, then they are just paper tigers.
If China goes in, they won’t be handing out candy bars and calling lawyers for permission to pull the trigger. They do have substantial investments in Africa, but I think that if they do something, it will be to send a message to us.
Not that the AH’s in DC will get it....
Soooo weird:
I belive Pravda more than the NYT, and now China’s foreign policy agrees with my more than that of my OWN COUNTRY.
Dude this is sooooo weird...
Russia and China can handle this problem while Obama jokes about it.
Look China:
Any time you feel froggy....Leap.
Won’t bother me a bit and you’ll probably dispatch them more efficiently than we will.
Ever wonder what a Phalanx CWIS might to a barge crowded with captured Somali Pirates..?
Why so did these DRUNK RUSSIAN SAILORS...!

RPG-7, small arms, CWIS...they get creative & experiment lots of stuff. Toootally unfair, totally unhurried, and TOTALLY satifying.
Ivan aims 2 pleeeze...
If you think China is a leader of the free world you certainly have another thing coming. Wait until China uses its economic might to build a navy and then projects power out of Asia. When this happens, forget about China subsidizing US debt to keep the US military afoot in every part of the world. We will see China start to control trade and access to markets and the US will not be able to finance 11 aircraft carriers to check China's power.
Attack the pirates bases? Look how much shxx Obama has caught here for our actions regarding Libya. However, if China is also on board, the politics of it should be easier. Yes, we do have to be careful of hostages. I believe that they are also raiding from “mother ships” where they also keep hostages. Maybe we could capture their families if we can figure out where they are land based, sail out to the mother ships and arrange an exchange of prisoners. Then escort the mother ship to land, and blow it up after the people depart.
With China, it is interesting to see that Commerce is now trumping ideology.
Go to it China. The United States government views America as a bank to provide wealth to invading Third World vermin who in turn will continue to elect corrupt politicians to govern the United States.
In light of the fact that Somali piracy is actually seafaring jihad, getting the PLA to stick its fingers in that hornet’s nest might actually be good policy for the West: the jihadis would have a new enemy to deal with (and not even “people of the Book”, full fledged kafirs), and China would have something to bog down its military expansion.
For China, supporting an operation — even a small-scale operation — in the distant Horn of Africa would be a feat about as difficult as attacking the short distance across the Taiwan Straits.
O has given them buckets of rocks to throw at the pirates.
The US government is presently leading US ships in armed convoys through the area. I know someone who was sailing on one of the ships. They warn the pirates and open fire. It doesn’t take much.
