If you've tried to buy a used car recently -- a lot of people are finding it hard to get what they want.
There is something of a used car shortage going on. News 10NBC found out there are a number of factors why there are fewer used cars out there.
One is -- more people are holding onto their new cars longer but also, there are fewer rental cars coming on the market and fewer people are leasing vehicles so therefore -- fewer of those cars are out there.
Joan Kamisch is trading her 2000 Chevy Lumina for a shiny 2007 Dodge Caliber. I held onto it as long as I could, but it started to have a lot of repairs on it. I figured I'd rather try to purchase another vehicle instead.
She found her car but dealers say there are fewer cars at auction and therefore fewer used cars on the market.
John Iannone, owner of Auction Direct in Victor, says there is a shortage and there isn't a shortage. He has over 500 cars on the lot and sold over 300 last month alone. Rental car companies are keeping their inventory longer. People aren't leasing like they used to. So the return of used cars is short. But when you go back a few years, those record-breaking years of 2005, 2006, 2007, all those new cars are now used cars. So is there a shortage? There is. Is it over played a bit? Yes.
U.S. New Car Sales fell from 16 Million in 2007 to 10 million in 2009.
The new car market is running at roughly 11-12 million units a year. The used car market is sometimes two or three times that. Brad McAreavy is president of the Rochester Auto Dealers Association. The new car market is what feeds the used car market. And of course that used car stay in that cycle a long time. But it all starts with new cars being fed into the market. So if that number starts to decline, ultimately it's going to lead to fewer used cars in the market.
So Joan signed on the dotted line this afternoon and got the car of her dreams.
New car dealers are also affecting the used car market. As their new car inventory gets low, car makers aren't able to meet the demand -- dealers are going to auction to find cars to fill the lot.
If you're buying -- shop around. Used car prices are at an all time high -- up about 30-percent from just a few years ago.
Auction Direct says Honda has surpassed Toyota as the brand of choice for people shopping for a quality used car.
So they expect us to BELIEVE a used car salesman???
The cars pay me! As a small business I get to deduct every mile at either actual cost OR 55+ cents a mile. I never take actual cost ;)

Yup. Just watched it the other night via Netflix streaming.
Joe Pesci was classic, too!
It's hard to believe that movie is now 28 years old.
You're welcome. I just looked, Ford still offers passenger vans in multiple-seat configurations. They are considered commercial vehicles, which may be why the regular salesmen are ignoring you. Try their fleet guys.
Here's a link to their site - http://www.ford.com/commercial-trucks/e-serieswagon/
Lumina probably needed a paint job to. It didn’t seem to stick to well to them ;) It likely needed head or intake gaskets, a rack and pinion (they leak out of the box) a new drivers seat (go flat fast) struts, ball joints and a laundry list of other issues that car has. Probably had the GM piston slap too.
However, she really has lame dreams. a caliber? shessh. At least get a SRT8.
at 10 people your going to need a E150 or Express van. closest you can get in a minivan is 8 people I think. As others have said check the commercial side of the dealership. Also enterprise around here aways is dumping a ton of them on their used car lots.
I’ll make you cry. I worked with a guy who found a 1969 Super Cobrajet being used as a chicken coop. He took it home for $500.
OMG - 1983, you're right!!! What a different world, eh?
“Nicky's Royal Flush Plumbing” - I LOVE IT!!! “Who am I? I put the toilets in this place!”
The scene where they have the (very) squeezed-in wedding reception in Monty's back yard and he sings is one of the funniest scenes in movie history, IMO.

Trivia: Jennifer Jason Leigh (Alison) and Taylor Negron (Julio) were both in 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High (the scene where Spicoli has the pizza delivered to Mr. Hand's class - JJL is in the class and TN is the pizza delivery guy).
Have you tried recharging the coolant? Sometimes that is all they need. You are gambling under $20.00 against maybe getting the A/C back.
15 years as a mechanic. But even a weekend warrior could see the problem with this cars a/c system. Theres a big hole in one of the lines. It’s on my list of parts to grab at the junk yard next time I am out there.
I should have figured that anyone who routinely drives clunkers is probably at least and most likely much more mechanical than I am.
Thanks a bunch everyone.
I have been looking at lots of places. My wife now has her heart set on a Dodge Sprinter from Bargainvans.com. Now my issue is financing. Our CU cant book the car we want so we might have to find a bank online. Any suggestions? This used car stuff sucks. I only want to spend around 15K but am willing to make the wife happy. LOL.
Anyone know what a Ford V-10 gets as gas mileage in a very large 21 passenger shuttle? Seen one here for sale. Might be a good deal.
If your looking that big, go get an old short bus school bus. the 15 passenger ones have small block V8’s some even have V6 engines.
Don’t forget the sprinter comes in 3 flavors. Dodge, Freightliner and Mercedes Benz. All 3 dealers should have banks willing to write the note on one.
The Ford V10 is a great engine, however at 4 bucks a gallon spend the extra on a diesel sprinter. expect no more than 10 MPG out of the V10
hubby is completely mechanical here. I drive a 2000 dodge neon 154K miles on it now. I have recently shortened my commute (job change) from 45-60 min one way to 15-20 min one way. Hubby has a company truck (HVAC). Son has my old 98 Dodge Neon. We just go down to the junk yard for parts. We also have two Ford F150 pick ups, one used exclusively for plowing. ALL paid for!! Screw you Obummer!!! FUBO!!
"Spoken like a true used car salesman."
Here's the way it works:
Looking to buy? = There's a shortage. If he sells you this car it might be weeks before he can find another on to sell. The only reason he is willing to sell it to you for 25% over Blue Book is because he likes you.
Looking for a good trade in allowance? = There is no shortage. In fact they have more cars than they can haul to the auction where no one is buying anyway. The only reason he is willing to give you anything at all for it is because he likes you.
well since the tsunami, they might need them.
No, they don’t. The Japanese drive on the left with the driver on the right side of the car, whereas we do the reverse. If anything, they’d buy cars from the UK or Australia, not here - getting a LHD car certified in Japan is apparently only slightly less difficult than getting a RHD car cleared here (if you aren’t a mail carrier).
