Top Republicans are increasingly convinced that President Barack Obama will be easily reelected if stronger GOP contenders do not emerge, and some are virtually begging Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels to add some excitement to the slow-starting nomination race.
Its a sign of the GOPs straits that the party is depending on the bland, wonkish Daniels for an adrenaline boost.
But interviews this week with longtime party activists and strategists made clear that many in the Republican establishment are unnerved by a field led by Mitt Romney, who could have trouble confronting Obama on health reform; Tim Pawlenty, who has yet to ignite excitement; Jon Huntsman, who may be too moderate to get the nomination; and Newt Gingrich, weighed down by personal baggage and a sense that he is a polarizing figure from the 1990s.
Despairing Republican lobbyists say their colleagues dont ask, Who do you like? but instead, Who do we back?
Its not that theyre up in arms, said a central player in the GOP money machine. Its just that theyre depressed.
And a huge swath of operatives, donors and strategists remain uncommitted, in the hope that the field is not yet set.
So instead of solidifying against the overwhelming force being amassed by Obamas reelection campaign, the GOP is indulging in an embarrassingly public and probably futile search for a more compelling standard-bearer.
House Speaker John Boehner, the nations highest-ranking Republican, confessed that he did not watch the first GOP debate of the cycle because he believes there is still time for more candidates to emerge. He said last week on NBCs Today show: I would expect that we havent seen all of the candidates. He then proceeded to plug Daniels.

Mitch also has the LP vote sewn up. That’s a great base to work from. Well at least his campaign slogan could be “Little man for little government”
“Daniels justs looks like a wimp.”
No small consideration. The last minute voters are typically influenced bu superficial characteristics such as physical characteristics.
“At 57 he is not a towering leadership figure to be feared. His Harley makes him look bigger than he is, but standing next to Obama in a debate? He will look like a wimp! Appearance does count these day, the media will play it and exaggerate his small stature. He cant win, the MSM will see to it.”
He’s only 5’6” but by the time the MSM gets through with him, most people will think he is 4’6”. Bizarre photo angles and tall folks strategically planted by the MSM next to Mitch will do the trick. Then, the comedy channel, late night hosts and SNL will gleefully get their laugh attack machine going. We might not like it, but this stuff does matter. If we want to beat the worst president in history, we better take note of these pesky and superficial “details”.
Across the years, I have heard many times that “My governor is so great”.
Okay, if he is a ‘great governor’, what has he done to merit the accolade?...........
Two of Reagan’s three SCOTUS appointments upheld Roe v Wade. I guess Reagan was a RINO.

Attorney will appeal ruling that Hoosiers have no right to resist illegal police entry

INDIANAPOLIS | An Evansville lawyer will ask the Indiana Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling that Hoosiers have no right to resist illegal police entry into their homes.
“We’re just not going to let this lie; we’re going to see if there’s anything we can do about it,” said Erin Berger, attorney for Richard Barnes.
Barnes was convicted of misdemeanor resisting law enforcement for shoving a police officer who tried to enter Barnes’ home after Barnes told the officer he couldn’t come in.
The Indiana Court of Appeals overturned Barnes’ conviction because the jury was not instructed on Barnes’ common law right to resist illegal police entry into his home.
But in a 3-2 decision written by Justice Steven David, an appointee of Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, the state’s high court reinstated the conviction and proclaimed “the right to reasonably resist an unlawful police entry into a home is no longer recognized under Indiana law.”
Berger said she was “surprised” at how far the court went in its decision.
“It paints with a very broad brush, and I hope that the Supreme Court will consider revisiting how broad the ruling appears to be on its face,” Berger said.
Berger told The Times she will file a petition for rehearing in the next few weeks asking the Indiana Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling.
If the state’s high court denies her petition or affirms the original ruling, Berger said she plans to appeal to the United States Supreme Court.
Since the court’s decision last Thursday, Berger said she’s been contacted by attorneys, law professors and many others offering assistance for an appeal.
“You’re ignorant and ill-informed, in other words, which is quite a trick if you spend any time here on FR.”
Aw Shucks Huck, you’re probably right. Here’s a few other things I’m “ignorant” about:
1) I am ignorant of what it’s like to have to beg and “pretty please” the dems in my legislature in hope that they’ll come back to the state house to do their job. . .
2) I am ill-informed on the chutzpah it takes to ask social conservatives for a “truce” because their “principles” don’t matter as much as my middle of road/wishy washy RINO stance. . .
3) Lastly, I have no clue what it’s like to put a room full of people to sleep with only 4 words, “Hi I’m Mitch Daniels. . .”
O’Connor and Kennedy, particularly O’Connor, proved not necessarily reliable and unworthy; but, that was then, this is now.
A Mitchbot, huh? Infected with Mitchbotulism.
So I guess Reagan was a RINO? Or...sometimes you can't rely on your SCOTUS picks. Which one is it?
So, if Obama runs as a Republican, will you will support him?
Check out 68. My reply is at 71.
I ain’t a Daniels fan, but he is, at the very least, a capitalist, he isn’t a socialist.
I would not vote for Obama, but I would vote for Daniels if he is running against Obama.
You can be such an ass. What a stupid question.
He is... except he’s using the name Slick Willard.
Sorry, ... every time the party ELITE have done the picking we’ve been beat by the RATs. We don’t want anything from the Party Elites.
She walked into that one. Better yet how about Romney?
What is Sarah the Barracuda doing posting here anyway, shouldnt she be campaigning or traveling or another book tour or Reality documentary?
“...but, that was then, this is now.”
I, Sarabaracuda, do hereby swear to support the Republican nominee for president no matter who she or he may be. I urge all Freepers to take this pledge along with me. Hi, my name is Barry Obush. Today I'm announcing my candidacy for the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States. Thank you for your support! |
