KANO, Nigeria — At least 16 people were killed in a pre-dawn attack Friday in a Christian village in northern Nigeria beset by ethnic and sectarian violence, police told AFP. Unidentified gunmen attacked the farming village in Bauchi state, one of the worst hit states by post election riots last month, killing 16 residents and burning 20 houses. "There was an attack on Kurum village by unknown gunmen and from reports reaching me 16 people have been killed and 20 houses burnt in the attack," Amama Abakasanga, Bauchi state police commissioner, told AFP by telephone from Bauchi. The area which came under attack is in Borogo local government area and along the border with violence-wracked Plateau state, whose capital Jos has been a flashpoint of sectarian unrest. Police have deployed in the area to prevent escalation of violence in this region, notorious for clashes pitting predominantly Christian farmers and Fulani Muslim nomads.

Africa is more important than most of us realize. There are real wars happening in the region, with Muslims trying to export Islam to that continent. Thanks for posting.
The only comfort to this story is to know those who were killed, on Judgment Day, will have their names listed in The Book Of Life.

If the truth must be told neither republican nor democratic presidents are bothered by the plight of persecuted Christians.
Neither Bush nor Obama were interested in the plight of the Christian community in Iraq and Afghanistan or Christians in Indonesia etc.
Southern Sudan however, gives us hope. Evangelical Christians and yes, Hollywood stars put pressure on the US government to demand a negotiated settlement between Bashir and Southern Sudan. In July, Southern Sudan will become an independent nation.
I am beginning to think that that Southern (mainly Christian) Nigeria should split from the North.
Assuming the country splits into two, how long do you think it will be before the muslim half seeks to incorporate the christian half?
There were some good essays written a few years back about the importance of Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, in the southern hemisphere, especially Africa. Christianity has shown signs of tiredness and decadence in parts of Europe and in America, especially the mainline churches, but there is a new vitality in Africa.
So, in a way, there is a race to see whether Africa will be dominated by Christianity or Islam—the one gaining by persuasion and conversion, and the other gaining by conquest, force, and killing. Much depends on which side wins.
No doubt Obama is delighted to hear that the Muslims are killing Christians and burning churches in Nigeria. After all, that’s what his cousin Railla Odinga was doing in Kenya, and Obama helped him as far as he could, even paying him a million dollars to help subsidize his church-burning thugs.
Two religions, and two offers. One offers eternal life and happiness; the other offers to kill you if you don’t submit.

The Oil is in the Christian half, so naturally the Northern Muslim part would covet it. A separation could potentially be bloody. All this could have been avoided at independence.
Nigeria was really administered as two different colonies by the British - the North as a collection of Islamic Emirates with a British overseer and the South as a more traditional colony.
In the North, Christian missionaries were discouraged while in the South they were given a free hand.
There are many reasons for this. One of them is the commonly held perception (amongst the British) that Islam was the “right and proper religion for the natives”. The second was administrative convenience - easier to rule through an Emir or Sultan than setting up a parallel administrative structure. The British adjudged “indirect rule” in Northern Nigeria to be a success, but the end result was that the British developed a soft spot for a group of people who were indoctrinated from an early age to hate them.
The idea of “indirect rule” as applied in Northern Nigeria was adopted from the British experience in Colonial India. Less progressive Indian Muslims were favoured over the Hindus because Muslim leaders were better colonial subjects. This silly sentimentalism influenced the emigration of semi-literate Pakistanis to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s.
Britain has lived to regret it.
Then again I was educated in a public school.
Actually Islam is about a thousand years old in the Sahel Region of Sub-Saharan Africa. Shortly after the death of the Prophet Mohammed, Arab traders using camel caravans crossed the Sahara and introduced Islam to city states in the Sahel.
