Yesterday was a sad day for Free Republic
May 3, 2011 | Huck

Posted on 05/03/2011 4:46:53 AM PDT by Huck

Yesterday should have been a glorious day around here. There should have been fireworks and celebration. There should have been somber remembrances. There should have been patriotic tributes. There should have been shared joy at the news that our guys had finally gotten Bin Laden.

Instead, when I visited the site, what I found was a lot of carping. I found people focused more on the political spin than on the great news. I found people transferring their birther mentality onto this event, talking about Obama faking this news, photoshopping information, etc. It wasn't everybody, but it was a LOT of people. It made me sick.

Yesterday Free Republic seemed like DU. It makes me wonder what the hell is going on. Are Freepers getting younger? I always assume that DU is so pathetically immature because they must be younger. Free Republic has always been a place dominated by great class, and wit, and decency. Not this time. What I saw yesterday was a pathetic embarrassment and totally unworthy of this great forum.

As some of you may know, I was in lower Manhattan on 9-11. I was just across the street from the WTC when the first plane hit. I still remember the beautiful clear blue sky that day. I remember walking in between the towers just a minute or so before 8:46am, on my normal route to work. I remember my co-workers screaming in panic when they watched from an office window as the second plane hit the south tower. I remember women crying and screaming hysterically. I remember not being able to contact my wife to tell her I was OK. I remember people jumping to their deaths. I remember seeing the north tower go down with my own eyes, hearing it with my own ears. I remember fleeing Manhattan. I remember it was a Tuesday.

I remember returning to work the following Monday, riding the ferry passed the site, noxious smoke still billowing from the wreckage. I remember armed troops on the sidewalks. I remember wearing a breathing mask inside my building because the foul odor was seeping in through the ventilation system. I remember thinking we'd really gotten kicked in the teeth. They had killed innocent people, they had traumatized our women and children, and I really wanted revenge. I hung a picture on my wall of the American eagle sharpening his talons.

It has been a long time since that day. It's hard to believe how fast time flies. Then again, if you lost your loved one, I imagine time hasn't gone so fast. I love my wife so much, I can empathize with anyone who has lost the one they love. I can't imagine how that would be, and don't want to know, but I can cry for those people because I know what it is like to find your one true love.

I'm not an Obama fan. I hate socialism. But I am so happy that Bin Laden is killed, and that we have exacted some real revenge. It's about time. The politics don't even play into it for me. I still have the little flag, now tattered, that I flew on my car antenna after 9-11. I want to take it out of storage and put it on my car. I want to see American flags on cars like we saw back then. But it's not going to happen, and partially because the normally patriotic conservatives such as the ones here on Free Republic are instead focused on the politics and the fact that a socialist Democrat was president and will get some of the credit.

I guess you all would have been pissed on D-Day too. FDR was as big a socialist as anyone. I guess VE day and VJ day would have chapped your hides, since Truman was a DEM. I don't mean to paint with a broad brush. I know it wasn't every Freeper acting this way. But when I went on the board, that was the general impression, and it was really disappointing. It should have been a great day here. Instead, I saw a lack of patriotism and a lack of class. Free Republic should be better than this. If conservatives lose their patriotism and class, then what will happen to those virtues? I hope we can get them back soon. In the meantime, thanks for reading.

Respectfully,

Huck

“Rapid DNA” technology will enable detectives to test material at the scene of a crime or in a police station and eliminate the need to send it to a laboratory.

A Whitehall briefing paper discusses the use of portable equipment for DNA analysis in one hour rather than three or four days with the longer-term aim of reducing the testing time to 30 minutes.

Please get your facts straight. As for secrecy, when so many people are involved, you will get different versions. Give it time. Sometimes things are as they seem. Bin Laden is dead.

Very well said. I’m with you! We thank the big dummie for pulling the trigger but he didn’t make the gun; he didn’t do the intelligence; he didn’t follow up six months ago, he simply took advantage of a political moment. Nothing more, nothing less.

Obama did send more troops to Afghanistan BUT tightened the rules of engagement, the death toll under him has surpassed Bush’s 8 yrs. The War is NOT over and while we are here celebrating like our home team won the Super Bowl, there will be retribution and our troops will take the direct hit, I just wonder if Obama will allow them to protect themselves.

Huck, I sometimes regret checking in here too, and seeing the tone. (Note my tagline.)

But if there’s more than one opinion on FR and some of us are so politically sensitized as to suspect anything 0bama says or does, why is that such a poke in the eye?

Frankly I’m more annoyed that no one here was outraged by the abortion joke at the correspondents’ dinner the other night.

Furthermore, many of us spend time here in the echo chamber that would be better spent writing to legislators or improving our local govts.

I recommend you do that rather than complain about partisanship and tinfoil. Consider writing one letter to your congressman for every post you write here. It’s more productive.

i am skeptical of most college kids, yet my own son is a freshman at Syracuse University in NY and i know his patriotism is true. he was in 4th grade here in NoVa when 9/11 happened. i emailed him last night to ask if he remembered the WHERE IS OSAMA board game he had made for his class project at St James. Also, his 4th grade teacher sent a note home suggesting he had anger issues because in the paper she had them write after 9/11 he talked about wanting to kill bin Laden. He laughed and said yeah he did remember. he also wore red white and blue to classes yesterday, as did his best friends who are at VA tech and are also from NoVA. Being young when it happened doesn’t mean that they don’t remember it and feel vindication. But at the same time, knowing the majority of college students are obama-loving leftists, i was suspicious.

I am not a fool. The news about OBL being killed on the heel of the news “70% country headed in wrong direction.”
And the way Obama talks you would think he pulled the triger.... So sue me.... I don’t believe they killed OBL.

It seems that Obama takes every opportunity to do things in the **least** transparent manner. Geeze! You wonder why some here on Free Republic are exasperated?

1) It is a **simple** matter to prove one’s natural born citizenship. Unanointed Americans do it every day! Obama first posts a forged COLB, sends a man to prison, ruins Major Cook's career, and then posts second “birth certificate” with nothing controversial that is filled with kerning, layers, and in a form and manner that presents many opportunities for mischief.

None of the above was necessary. All of the above could have, and should have, been completely resolved during the election with immediate release of all of the **best** and certifiable evidence. Obama has **never** done that.

Then with the death of Osama bin Laden, Obama then **again** goes about it in the LEAST transparent manner imaginable!

Obama is a sadist, uses every event for future political posturing and advantage, or is an idiot. Maybe he is all three.

In my business, I deal with the public. Yesterday - everyone that talked about OBL (mostly unprovoked by me - although I did have Rush playing on the radio) - voiced doubts about it happening the way the government and news media reported that it did.

I don’t think this is just a FReeper thing - I think there are an awful lot of people in the country that don’t trust what they hear anymore. It’s not just crazy conspiracy nuts - it’s the general public! I agree with you, it’s very sad that we’ve come to this - but it is what it is.

I’m glad the bastard’s dead - but I’m not happy that he got a “respectful” burial - - I’m not happy that they won’t release photos of him for fear of “inflaming Islamic sensibilities”. If this is truly the case - then it doesn’t matter that we killed OBL - we won that battle, but we’ve lost the war.

Don’t blame FReepers for voicing what everyone is thinking right now.

Rather than bomb the compound, they went to all the trouble of personally killing him only to give him a "proper" muslim burial and toss him in the ocean?

Even after bombing the compound we would have to send in men to scrape the DNA off the walls. I wouldn't say that the "proper" burial had anything to do with the say they went in, they went in correctly and did everything correctly. After that it was political correctness and that includes the "no pictures" commandment (so far anyway).

“When you can’t believe a word out of this administration it is hard to suspend disbelief. I mean an instant DNA test, no pictures, and a quick sea jettison? These people are control freaks.”

Yes, and there seem to be a lot of FReepers lately that demand that we believe what Hussein says without question. VERY suspicious and troubling.

I have to agree. There is more to it then meets the eyes. The end justifies the means, kill Osama get re-elected. I don’t believe he authorized this for any other reason then a popularity contest to boost his poll numbers, to make him a “man” or “the man”. As well as to avoid the masses from learning that his parentage doesn’t fulfill the presidential eligibility clause of the constitution. Sure eliminating Osama was the right thing to do, God Bless our Troops. Yet, to some of us, it feels dirty, because Obama and his ilk aren’t likely to have done it because it was the right thing to do. He did it because it was the right thing for Obama. Some people will say that doesn’t matter, yet it all matters. We need to be more vigilant then ever and not celebrate the death of one evil man when there are many more evil men, who want to take Osama’s place and inflict worse devastation upon innocent people. If anything I am sad that such evil exists and relieved that good, such as our soldiers, can triumph over it.

I find myself lately as one of those who quickly wanders into conspiracy land. Its not a choice that I've intentionally made. I used to laugh at the craziness of characters like Alex Jones. I still don't subscribe to about 90% of what people like him say but I do not take the news at face value anymore.

I can remember the exact moment vividly when I lost my so called faith in our govt. It was when the courts and state and fed gov sat back and let Terry Schiavo starve to death. Remember she was the woman who was in a coma for so many years, cant remember exactly now. Her husband had moved on and was living with another woman. The husband wanted Terry to be pulled off life support so he could remarry. The courts sided with him , even though Terry's parents were willing to take care of her. It was never clear as to what Terry's wishes were on if she wanted to live on life support or have the plug pulled. Anyway the courts pulled the plug and she slowly withered away and starved to death. While so called laws let this happen and many political people cried havoc for this not a single person took action to stop this. This was my “epiphany” moment and have never since trusted anything the govt does.

So while I'm glad Osama is dead and I have the utmost respect for our military, I do not blindly accept this news when Obama comes and TV and says its so without any proof and a body quickly dumped out to sea. This govt is in business for itself and will squash anyone that tries to oppose it. They will lie and cheat and say whatever they want to get they want. If that makes me a tin foil person then so be it. But I've been an adult long enough now to see what these politicians are capable of.

I agree. I loathe Obama. It is beginning to seem as if many here loathe our entire government. I would love to see our government cut by 50%, but I don’t hate it. I spent 25 years in the military. It has its faults, but it isn’t a corrupt tool of evil.

I don’t give Obama ANY credit for Osama’s death. I think his policies were counterproductive to killing Osama...but I was very glad to see Osama dead. If Obama is given credit by some of our brain dead voters...oh well. Those are the same voters who were unmoved by Rev Wright.

I used to consider it the mark of a liberal to view every event as a political event. It seems that attitude - politics uber alles - has taken over some who claim to be conservative.

Asking for details about OBL death, and questioning the phony DNA report is not a conspiracy theory. The DNA thing was stupid, DNA testing takes a minimum of 4 days. They should of said we are awaiting confirmation by DNA, but these rank amateurs screwed that up. This does not make me a conspiracy nut, although I look good in tin foil hats.
