Live Thread for the Canadian General Election, May 2nd,2011
Conservatives over 40% now with western (very conservative, ‘cept for BC) provinces reporting just a handful of votes so far!
Parliamentary majority for Harper already assured. Hopefully, he can get close to 50% of popular vote in this 3-way race.
And the Bloc have become...well, not much of a party at all.
There’s two levels of bad news, here, however. Conservatives have lost a potential partner in forming a coalition government, with the absolutely horrible showing of Bloc Quebecois. Secondly, the NDP has gained a couple rural seats from the Conservatives in the far North of various provinces, meaning the Conservatives would need to form a coalition. There’s a real nasty specter of a NDP-liberal minority government rearing its ugly head.
The Liberal HQ looks like a funeral parlor right now. And the results out west haven’t come in yet. The last pre-election polls for the Prairies didn’t look good for the Grits.
So much for “The natural governing party of Canada”. This is a 1993 style wipeout.
Wow! Conservatives leading in British Columbia?
I have a few cousins from Montreal who are involved in their local Liberal Party. I can’t imagine they’re in good spirits tonight.
I’m watching on CSPAN2 here in the US. CBC has the Conservatives right on the doorstep at 154 leading & elected.
A few switches in projections, and the Conservatives are now looking at 150 seats, after all. Plus, I’ve investigated the BQ seats, and they are winning only where the Conservatives haven’t run a strong opposition, so it’s quite possible that they may be those BQ MPs who are most inclined to work with the Conservatives.
LOL! “Grits” and “Dippers!”
Any nifty nicknames for Conservative Party and Bloc Quebecois?
LOL! There’s a Pirate Party. Yaarrrggghhh!
Updates -
- AT LEAST a Conservative majority - British Columbia’s 36 seats may determine if it’s a majority
- Alberta 100% Conservative - they won every seat there
- Harper and Layton re-elected handily, Iggy and Duceppe in trouble in their ridings
Yes, at least Harper is back as PM!! A bare majority government would be great at this point but I was ready to settle for a minority again, just as long as it was conservative. :)
How difficult is it for an American to move to and live in Canada?
I will not stay and allow DNC vote buys to saddle my kids with millions in debt.
It’s not going Galt as I’d be supporting another socialist system.
Conservatives are called Torys.
You do not want to be at the mercy of Canadian health care.
That site lists a Rhinoceros Party. May ours become as small as theirs!
Conservatives are Tories, and Bloc Quebecois are referred to, by their detractors, as “Blockheads”
Watching the CBC on CSPAN-2, Peter Mainsbridge is trying to downplay the Tory numbers. Chantal Hebert looked downright depressed.
The blockheads and the grits have experienced severe shrinkage tonight.
