Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian, has cancelled a charity appearance in protest at the property mogul Donald Trump's campaign questioning President Barack Obama's citizenship.
Seinfeld pulled out of a September event to raise money for the St Jude Children's Research Hospital, hosted by the tycoon's son Eric, because, his spokesman said, "Jerry has grown increasingly uncomfortable" with the way Mr Trump is casting doubt on Mr Obama's birthplace and " feels this kind of demagoguery has no place in public discourse".
The move by Seinfeld is the first sign of a celebrity backlash against Mr Trump's improbable but high-profile flirtation with the Republican presidential nomination.
Mr Trump hit back in characteristic fashion in a letter obtained by the "New York Post" that lambasted Seinfeld for pulling out of the Eric Trump Foundation event.

Well , as late in life as this has come for him, it’s great to see Seinfeld finally find a political issue he is passionate about.
So Jerry is one of the Obama cripple kids!
Kramer for president!
So now Obama’s refusal to simply show the citizens formal documents establishing his Constitutional eligibility for his office is costing needy children medical care.
I don’t think Obama cares one whit.
The entire matter is ridiculous
I’m shocked. The comedian who did a trashy show about nothing is a liberal? My goodness, what will happen next!?
Jerry’s whole life has been about nothing. Now, he’s passionate about Trump saying something.
At least he’s consistent.
Shrinkage, Seinfeld has.
Very low class, to bail on the kids because he is irritated by “the Donald”.
Stand by for a celebrity race to bottom feeding.
The man who is all about nothing finally finds something.
Seinfeld could be really funny tho surprisingly often it was a bit boring.
Actually Kramer and George were the real comics.
Seinfelds leftist politics did creep into a few episodes too.
If Seinfeld is like a lot of rich Jews, he doesn’t know who his friends are. I don’t know about Trump, however, but he’s expressed support for Israel.
Not that,The guy does not honor a debt
I realize that his sitcom was tremendously popular, but I never thought it was very good, or even mildly funny. It seemed to me it was just 20 minutes of the main characters whining about some petty little everyday annoyance that all of us encounter from time to time.
Steinfeld... When was this guy ever funny? He never made me laugh. Get Sam Kinison back, he would be campaigning for The Donald
I suspect he backed off because he is a liberal and got huge pressure from his liberal friends.
As for debts, that’s what liberals do best — pile up debts and not pay them off. Trillions and trillions of dollars.
So a liberal pull out of a good charitable event to defend the chosen one. Real nice Jerry, politics before kids.
