6 arrested after Florida teen shot, his body burned in fire pit
CNN ^ | April 21, 2011 6:32 a.m. EDT | From John Couwels

Six people were arrested this week and accused of luring a 15-year-old boy to a Florida home, shooting him several times, burning his body in a fire pit and putting the remains into paint cans, authorities said.

The killing occurred Sunday in the central Florida city of Ocala, according to a statement from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Two females in the group allegedly lured the victim, Seath Jackson, to the home, and the group beat him with a wooden object. He was then shot several times with a .22-caliber gun, authorities said.

As the wounded teen attempted to flee, he was tackled and shot again, according to the sheriff's statement. His body was allegedly placed in a sleeping bag and burned in a fire pit outside the home.

His ashes were placed into several paint containers and thrown into a large garbage can, authorities said.

Authorities said they learned of the alleged plot from a member of the group who confessed to witnessing the killing.

Four adults and two minors were charged in connection with the killing.

Michael Bargo, 18; Charlie Kay Ely, 18; Justin Soto, 20; and two minors face first-degree murder charges, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

And James Haven, 37, faces charges of accessory to the crime for allegedly helping to dispose Jackson's remains and driving one of the suspects out of the area to avoid arrest, authorities said.

Sheriff's department documents gave little information about what caused the killing other than brief statements by suspects about a dispute and a growing hatred.

Soto's public defender, Bill Miller, would not comment on the case. Ely is not represented by an attorney, and Bargo will make his first appearance Thursday morning, according to Marion County courts.

Not in Florida, FRiend. I’ve been here for 30 years, and crackers are part of the culture. Crackers were the cowboys of Florida back in the day. It’s been associated as a racially insensitive term, but it’s really just another word that’s been bastardized as of late.

I’m not casting aspersions at the other sickos in our country, but it seems like Florida gets a lot of bad press. The old country/cracker/hillbilly attitudes persist in many parts of this State, and with the influx of non-native Hispanics, perversion is the soup du jour in the sticks.

Actually, cracker, is an old Florida term for people who drive cattle. For an explanation of the culture, read Strawberry Girl.

As a native Cracker I would point out that the term is not the least bit offensive to those of us Crackers. It’s one of those words that have been hijacked and its use is meant by some to be offensive. I simply refuse to let them have the word or the satisfaction of denying me the right to be one and to use the word!

As another poster points out the term came from the Florida cowboys who would use bull whips to drive the cattle and you could hear the cracking of the whips for miles. I have a great uncle who spent his entire working life making those whips from buckskin. It was quite an art, much like being a good cigar maker. He obituary said he had spent his life “putting the crack in Cracker!”

But you are certainly correct in your observation that the term is often meant to be offensive, the equivalent of the “N” word but for whites. Redneck is another of those words that have been hijacked.

“Havens was released on a $10,000 bond on Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.”

I can’t have read that right. A 37 year old “adult” who helped dispose of the evidence, i.e., the burned body of a 15 year old, was let out on a $10K bond?

Good Lord is right.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a rural area, what matters is that we now have a generation that have no conscience. You don’t have to be rich to have a conscience.

Care to explain you comment, FRiend? Cracker is not a racist term, it’s part of Florida culture.

I’ve spent MANY days hunting in the forests of Ocala, and I know the denizens of the area. Many of the farm hands and property owners are the most down-to-Earth folks you’ve ever met. I tracked a 5-point buck to a man’s property on year, and he personally drove me out to the far reaches of his property to retrieve it, gut it, and quarter it. He even offered taxidermy services to me.

You ask anyone who lives there, and they’ll tell you that things are starting to get bad in their neck of the woods. The kids aren’t alright, as the song goes, and this story is emblematic of that.

Not sure what you mean by bigoted, but as a Floridian, I’m a little incensed at your accusations.

James Havens was released on $10,000 bail??? When the courts don’t seem to think a crime like this warrants a bail like that it is no wonder that such a heinous thing seems so inconsequential.

So the enlisted “friends”... what, were just bored one day and said, “ya, killin’ somebody, and burning their body and ditching the remains into paint cans sounds cool, sure... be there in ten minutes”... tell ya one thing, these kidz weren’t home schooled.

Children have been raised in packs from about 6 months of age in institutions (day-care centers and pre-K programs, and then formal schooing where they are increasingly in latch-key programs before and after school.) Parental involvement is at a minimum. Now, unprecedented numbers of unwed teens are having their own babies and keeping them, (but not raising or nurturing them).

Society is being radically transformed.

Is anyone surprised at the results?

Amen, panthermom! The latest generation of kids is one of the strangest bunch I've seen, and I'm a young 31. They're more concerned about how many "friends" they have of Facebook or how many hits they have on YouTube than they are with studying or community service.

When I was a kid, Facebook was little league baseball and YouTube was the Boy Scout Jamboree. This latest generation is morally and socially vacuous, and I fear for the future of our country and our world.

He was an accessory-after-the fact, and most likely is the one who told the police of the crime. Sounds like a plea deal for state’s evidence............
