Teens flunking climate change
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | April 19, 2011 | by: Josephine Marcotty

This survey of teen attitudes and understanding about its causes and consequences is enlightening. Turns out more than half would flunk a test on climate change.

They found that 54 percent of the kids believe that global warming is happening, but many do not understand why. In this assessment, only 6 percent of teens would get an A or a B if they were tested on their knowledge, and 41 percent would receive a C or D. 54 percent would get an F.

But they do understand some things better than adults. For example:

* 57% of teens understand that global warming is caused mostly by human activities, compared to 50% of adults;

* 77% of teens understand that the greenhouse effect refers to gases in the atmosphere that trap heat, compared to 66% of adults;

* 52% of teens understand that carbon dioxide traps heat from the Earth’s surface, compared to 45% of adults;

* 71% of teens understand that carbon dioxide is produced by the burning of fossil fuels, compared to 67% of adults.

* 54% of teens say that global warming is happening, compared to 63% of adults;

* 35% of teens understand that most scientists think global warming is happening, compared to 39% of adults;

* 46% of teens understand that emissions from cars and trucks substantially contribute to global warming, compared to 49% of adults;

* 17-18% have heard of coral bleaching or ocean acidification, compared to 25% of adults.

The legal profession has ruined the media's interpretaion of terminology. The courts can define "facts" to be different than the actual scientific "facts" at issue.

57% of teens understand that global warming is caused mostly by human activities, compared to 50% of adults;

They may "understand" it, but the remaining 43% get it right... The vast majority of global warming is caused not by human activities, but by natural climatalogical cycles as influenced by the sun and by the rotation of the earth and their influence on bodies of water. Looking at historical data, it is quite obvious that since humans came onto the face of the earth, CO2 levels are actually way down from historic highs. And that global temperatures decreased every time while CO2 levels continued to increase, proving that it is a false conclusion that CO2 causes global warming. It is quite obvious to me - and I do have a scientific background - that high CO2 levels are a result, not a cause, of global warming. And it may actually be true that increases in CO2 over time result in lower global temperatures, but there has been no cause and effect relationship established; in fact, the increases in CO2 are more likely to be a result of global warming, but that the cooling or warming of the earth's temperatures may not be the result of fluctations of CO2 or methane at all . The earth's natural processes are quite effective in maintaining an equilibrium. But what the radicals are attempting to do is change that equilibrium... that is what scares me more than anything.

71% of teens understand that carbon dioxide is produced by the burning of fossil fuels, compared to 67% of adults.

While it is true that burning fossil fuels does produce carbon dioxide, that certainly is not the only source of carbon dioxide. It is quite likely that warming of the oceans resulting in dissolution of CO2 and other dissolved gases are the primary source of such gases.

46% of teens understand that emissions from cars and trucks substantially contribute to global warming, compared to 49% of adults;

Methinks that emissions from automobiles have recently been proven not to substantially contribute to global warming. In fact, based on reports just this week, the production of CO2 in the U.S. has decreased in the last couple of years.

97% would rather go hang out at the mall or illegally download something than lift one little finger in reaction to global warming.

“is caused mostly by human activities”

I don’t think even the most outlandish claims advanced by an actual scientist say that it is MOSTLY caused by human activities. I mean, correct me if I am wrong - but the idea of Anthropomorphic Climate Change (human caused) is that we are CONTRIBUTING to the trend - not that we are the primary determinant.

What actual % of CO2 is put out by cars, compared to biomass, or industrial activity, or a forest fire? They don’t want to get into those numbers.

Global Warming, a Closer Look

According to the calculations above, human CO2 output contributes to 0.117% of the Greenhouse effect.

When you throw 12 of 10000 people out of a stadium for being too noisy, it's obvious you have an agenda against the 12.

Why do you assume the other 43% got it right??

8% thought Reagan and Bush were fully responsible

5% thought Mr. Bean had something to do with it

3% blamed emo kids......

lol /sarcasm

In a few years it will be 100% caused by Americans, lol

“I read it in Algore.”

Al Gore flunked his science classes, so there is still hope for the little darlings.

I’m sure glad those evil SUVs and power plants caused the Global Warming that ended the Earth’s many ice ages. I’d hate to be living under a mile of ice.

Yup, and Al gore would never have been able to live in Tennessee, since glaciers supposedly covered the entire N American continent that far south.

I love survey questions based on false premises, but I can sense some encouragement in this line. The global warming scam has now been fully exposed and hopefully more and more people are seeing it.

"In the instance of this particular poll, the pollster is assessing the degree of indoctrination that has taken place among a new generation of students who have been force-fed over their schooling years multiple showings of the movie An Inconvenient Truth [sic]."

The pathetic reality of this is omnipresent here where I teach as one of the science indoctrinators actually indoctrinates her students for an entire unit over this propaganda film.

Why?

Why WHAT? Do you mean "why do I say they are MORE brainwashed"? Did you read the article? Did you understand the number of points where the kids DO "know" more "facts" than the adults?
