New Tinnitus Therapy Demonstration April 16 at UCLA Westwood

Los Angeles, Calif: (MMD Newswire) April 11, 2011 -- Dr Murray Grossan, Ear Nose and Throat specialist for tinnitus, will be speaking to the Los Angeles Tinnitus Group on Saturday April 16 at UCLA. The public is invited.

He will discuss his tinnitus treatment method based on neuroplasticity, which means that brain functions can be changed for tinnitus relief.

Although his book for tinnitus is titled Stressed? Anxiety? Your Cure is in the Mirror, DrGrossan points out that stress is not a cause of tinnitus.

Usually tinnitus can come from loud noise exposure, inner ear infections, hypertension or certain drug toxicity. But there are many instances where it can come solely from the brain itself. For example, when a surgery or trauma injures the hearing nerve, tinnitus can start, even though the ear is no longer connected to the brain.

According to the American Tinnitus Society, fifty million persons experience tinnitus; but ten million suffer from tinnitus.

His program from the Stressed? Anxiety? book uses a method of changing the circuits so that the tinnitus no longer a symptom. Of his hundreds of tinnitus patients, his method has been successful without resorting to sedatives or tranquilizers.

The important thing for the patient is to realize that building new pathways is no different than learning a better tennis serve or golf stroke. The book gives the exercises that work for tinnitus relief. Like having a full time coach to help your tennis serve, Dr Grossan uses a mirror to tell you when you do the exercise right. "With the mirror to guide you, you have your coach with you seven days a week."

As part of the demonstration, you are asked to bring your own portable mirror.

***You take large doses of aspirin? Steroids? Statins? NSAIDs? All can cause tinnitus, especially if taken in conjunction with each other..............****

Unfortunatly I have to take asprin, blood thinners, and statins together each day.

Sounds like a one note siren all day and night.

Put me on your “ring list!”

Too many years of jet aircraft engines, steel shop hammering, power plant noise, aspirin, blood thinnners and statins together. And I wore ear plugs!

I can’t even hear the spring peepers anymore, or the night sounds in summer.

On the good side, I can’t hear much of what my wife says either.

I’ve reached the conclusion that there are many “triggers” for ear ringing and that, like the current wide-ranging classification of many ills in the “autism spectrum,” there are many things that trigger ear ringing and ways to deal with it. My left ear seems the most affected. I started hearing the “noise” 22 years ago. (you can live with it, once you accept it)

My BIG “trigger” is MSG (all the 30+ odd “spices,” “proteins” and “natural flavor” they put in processed foods (boxed) inc. pastries, frozen foods inc., prepared dinners, frozen chicken (added broth) and ice cream, bottled and canned foods, pretty much everything you don’t make from scratch has some of it in there. MSG can also make you feel like you’ve taken a handful of antihistamines, ie jumpy.

MSG gave me stomach fits for 30 years - didn’t have a clue for decades why - finally my gall badder was was removed but for about the last 6 years I knew that a large, inadvertent intake of MSG caused an attack.

Other ear ringing triggers: noise and pressure (loud audio and/or with too base), road noise in car, on plane and the accompanying pressure of moving in a car or plane, and neck pinching from my deteriorating discs that get worse and or better for whatever reason.

My “cures” are avoid MSG (eat out as little as possible), avoid noise and air pressure, stretch my neck, relax, wait it out and tune it out (success with that depends on the level of ear ringing and whether or not “aching” in my spine and neck is also involved during a bad “spell”), drink enough water. I’ve gotten pretty good at “tuning it out” on low to mild days — it’s like changing the channel, just get busy with something else. And for the bad days, it’s okay because I know I can ride it out (I just let those around me know it’s a bad day, or 2-3 days, so they understand if I’m distracted or a bit edgy and ill tempered).

A positive attitude is good for everything that ails you.

I’ve just started 500mg a day of Niacin supplements (flush-free) to see if it is a good assist in improved circulation and mood boosting. I’ll let you know.
