In-N-Out Burgers vs. Five Guys
Me | 4/8/11 | Oh, the huge vanity

Posted on 04/08/2011 9:32:29 PM PDT by Mike Darancette

5 guys just moved into town which is better In-N-Out Burgers or Five Guys?

From what I hear 5 Guys is better but for fries, shakes, burger taste and prices. What say you all.

Five Guys is the most overrated, overpriced burger joint around. I don’t care much for burgers anyway. I do prefer In-N-Out and Freddy’s (a small Kansas based burger and Custard chain)

Wow. You may get the ZOT over a fast food burger thread.

That's hardcore.

In-N-Out - fresh ground beef, crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes. The fries taste home-made. The shakes are made with real ice cream, not some synthetic glop. I’m not a fan of hamburger buns so I take my Double Doubles protein-style. Great stuff.

I eat things like BBQ, Gyros, tacos, etc, but don’t much like hamburgers for some reason.

The eldest son was the Company CEO. He and the Company CFO were killed when their Private Jet flipped over on approach to John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The plane crashed in a vacant lot between two Car Dealerships in Santa Ana.

The NTSB ruled that the crash was caused by Wake Turbulence from a 757 that was on approach just ahead of them. I think the crash caused the FAA to require more distance between Commercial and Private Aircraft on approach.

When I was flying into JWA with my Boss in his Beechcraft, it was all I could think about. We were following a twin engine Continental Express Commuter Jet in the pattern.

If I did live near a big city I'm pretty sure I would rarely try chain restaurants choosing the kind of places you described here.

I remember Hardee's way-back-when, very good burgers, several years back Hardee's and Carl's Jr. merged or one bought the other (IIRC). I'd get Carl's Jr. on the west coast and Hardee's in the southeast, none in Houston. About two years ago they opened a Carl's Jr. in Bastrop, Tx. On my way to Austin, the first time I saw their sign I exited the bypass, U turned and got a bacon cheese burger, good as I remembered it.

Seems to me that there are four kinds of burger places:

> Fast food chains - McDonalds, Burger King, Hardees/Carl's Jr., Dairy Queen, Whataburger, Jack in the Box, etc.

> Burger chains - In and Out Burger, Fat Burger, 5 Guys, Fuddruckers, White Castle, etc.

> Restaurant burgers - Chili's, TGI Fridays, Denny's, etc.

> Unique mom-n-pop shops - everywhere in every quality and price

I'd have to go with Hardee's/Carl's Jr., Fuddruckers, Chili's and the long-closed Burger Haus on Park Place in Houston as my favorites in those categories.

In and Out hands down. Nothing like a double double, fries and a chocolate shake. Everything is fresh. People who work there are polite. Once I had asked the girl at the window what was the best time to beat the crowd. She said from about 4:10 P.M. to about 4:25 P.M. I took her advice and she was right.

Texas still has the best chicken fried steak in the world.

Have you ever had a Dot Coffee House CFS? Dot is part of the Pappas restaurant empire and they have the second best CFS on the planet, they're so big that they're nicknamed saddle blankets. Someone's grandmother in Texas makes THE best CFS, hope to meet her some day ;-)

when I was a Kid I used to spend my Summers working at my cousin’s speed shop in Baldwin Park, a block from the first In-N-Out. It was the best then and it’s the best now.

I don’t like Five Guys, however I’ve not had an In-N-Out burger.

Five Guys is over hyped, IMO.

I live in Oregon, and prefer Sonic to Five Guys...except that you have to eat in your car. lol

My personal favorites are Dick’s Hamburgers and Zip’s Drive In in Spokane, WA. Dick’s best burger is the Whammy (2 meat, 2 cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion) and some fresh-cut fries with their home-made tartar sauce. Zip’s best burger is the Belly Buster with beef, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Their fries are okay and their tartar sauce is to die for.

Hardee’s bought Carl's Jr. Used love CJ’s Bullseye BBQ Burger. I liked CJ’s better. Hardee’s also bought Roy Rodger's Chicken and tried to close the chain. Customer outrage kept it open.

In & Out is a family owned business and is Not a franchise. Every restaurant is owned by the Snyder Family and the are committed Christians. Their drink cups all have Bible verses on the inside of the bottom of the cup. Their food quality is always the best and their employees are paid well.

I’ve never tried Five Guys, but I am told they are an In & Out copycat. You can’t do better than perfect, so I don’t think Five Guys could match up.

True story, when my son was returning to Ghana (Peace Corps) from a visit home, he made me stop at In & Out on the way to the airport and bought a burger to hand-carry all the way back to Africa for his roommate (who actually ate it and survived).
