Marni Adams was driving down Clifton Road at 7:30 a.m. last Sunday on the way to meet a group of her friends for their regular run.
But her otherwise routine morning took a decided twist when she was confronted by a coyote walking across Clifton near Caldow Street with a cat in its mouth.
Call it a maternal instinct. Or a passion to help an animal in need. Whatever it was, it motivated Adams to stop her car, jump out from behind the wheel and attempt to rescue the cat.
Adams quickly caught up to the coyote and began screaming at the startled animal in hopes it would release its grip on the feline.
I was making wild sounds, trying to scare the coyote, Adams recalled. I could see by the erect cats claws that it was alive, trying to fight free. The coyote came to a stop, dropped the cat, proceeded to run up the hill, stopped once to look back and then left.
Adams was aware of recent complaints from local residents about coyotes snatching pets that were running loose, and she has seen coyotes often as she lives near Knox Mountain.
She said the protocol for what to do if confronted by a coyote with a pet cat in its mouth didnt enter her mind, as her first instinct was to help the cat.
Other than being angry and hissing, Adams said the cat amazingly didnt suffer any wounds.

Hi GG. Around here coyotes kill the raccoons too. They’ll kill anything that walks if they can bring it down. They got a deer up by the pond in back. A little black dog too. Nasty sight.
Protocol:
1) Aim firearm-of-choice at coyote
2) Fire.
3) Prepare for the cat’s fear and indignation after hearing the loud “BANG”.
4) Dispose of coyote carcass and send the annoyed, frightened (but hopefully grateful) cat on its way. :-)
We didn’t want Boots eating anything but mice and rats. ;-)
HA! Tell that to the next Non-Domestic sparrow your cat brings home in its mouth, plays with until it kills it, then eats.
Predators are predators. The natural diet of cats are rodents and birds. NOT Special Kitty and Meow Mix...
IMHO... ;-)

I had an identical situation in my yard. I had to literally pry a chipmunk from the mouth of a very angry neighbors cat .
Cats are wild predators who choose to live in the company of Humans
Of course you are correct, as far as you go. But it isn't necessarily just the ones that "go feral". If allowed complete "wandering freedom", even good "live at home" dogs can and do "pack up", and even the singleton aggressive mutt can be a problem. I've seen WAY too many stories (even in the local weekly paper) of a person out walking their pooch, and an aggressive hound attacking the dog and/or the person.
Again. Cats don’t hunt livestock and children. Coyotes do. And my cats don’t eat the birds I feed. But they DO keep down the mice and rats. And on 80 acres there’s a lot of them.
Chipmunks are a small nuisance animal and a good reason to have cats. So are mice and rats. Btw, cats usually don’t eat chipmunks as they taste bad but they will kill them. Farm cats are useful. Coyotes are not.
OhhKkkk....
Ammo conservation. I like it!!!
Jamie Johnson loves his cat. That’s how I hold my Rocket. He loves a cuddle.
Although allergic to cats, I like them alot. However, coyotes eating a cat is not the end of the world. The country is overun with excess cats and dogs. In Wisconsin one can hunt cats there are so many.
Coyotes have to eat too. The cats are also killing off many species. Here in Michigan warblers are at risk. We have 50,000 stray dogs in Detroit. Postal workers are being attacked.
Who says coyotes don’t have a right to live.
Every farmer with dead livestock.
Now I have to hug my brood. BRB.
My neighbor almost lost her little Chihuahua last week to a coyote...she let the little nervous rat out without a leash OR supervision. I bet she doesn’t do THAT again!
Only if its a dingo.
Well played, sir!
***D, I, N, G, O...and Dingo was his name-o***
Happy to be home with its owners is Indica, an 11-month-old Bengal Tabby cat, joined here by Marni Adams, Jamie Johnson and Emelia Templeton
I got the impression that they were running (driving) towards each other.
