Republican Budget Plan to Eliminate National Debt: Ryan (CNBC)
CNBC ^ | April 5,2011 | Jeff Cox

Posted on 04/05/2011 5:51:12 AM PDT by Hojczyk

The Republican budget proposal will eliminate the national debt while still preserving costly entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, Rep. Paul Ryan told CNBC.

Speaking just hours before the spending plan gets its formal introduction before Congress, Ryan, head of the House Budget Committee, said the debt will peak at 74.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2014 and then drop from there.

"We've got to show the country that we can get this situation under control and grow the economy, and that's what we're doing," he said. "So whether (Democratic Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid is willing to pass this bill or Barack Obama is ready to sign it, I don't know the answer to that question.

"What I do know is I can't look my kids and my constituents in the eyes with my conscience being clear and not know that I didn't do everything I could to try and fix this problem before it got out of control."

Among the key tenets in a budget resolution to be presented are fundamental changes to the way Medicare and Medicaid are financed. The resolution forestalls action on Social Security, though Ryan said he expects a bipartisan agreement on that issue later this year.

More broadly, the plan contains provisions that Ryan has said will slash $4 trillion from federal spending over the next decade.

The resolution is necessary as a potential shutdown looms over Washington and Congress must approve raising the national debt limit.

Ryan acknowledged the political obstacles he will face both from Democrats and some members of this own party who may bristle at the aggressive spending cuts involved.

"The problem in Washington is, they take any honest and sincere attempt to fix this problem and use it as a political weapon against you in the next election," he said. "We can't let that deter us."

At this point, based on the recent inaction by the GOP, this is all talk and talk is cheap. Boehner is a sleaze ball, damn Pelosi had bigger nads that he does. Neither party is serious. time to PUT UP OR SHUT UP

The Republican proposal is all smoke and mirrors. If Ryan were serious he would reduce excessive federal spending by eliminating all federal agencies not in compliance with any of the enumerated powers granted to Congress in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution.

There are no enumerated powers to regulate the environment, communications, education, food, drugs, health, agriculture, alcohol, tobacco and firearms. These powers are reserved to the states or to the people per the 10th Amendment. Consequently agencies that are Unconstitutional include but are not limited to the EPA, FCC, Department of Education, FDA, DHHS, Department of Agriculture and the BATFE and must be abolished!

Congress will never balance the budget so long as they continue to have powers beyond those permitted to them in Article 1 Section 8 thereby usurping those powers delegated to the people in the 10th Amendment. Congress must comply with the Constitution in order balance the budget.

Why does the debt have to peak in 2014?

There is another election in 2012.

Shut’er down!

” said the debt will peak at 74.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2014 and then drop from there. “

Does anybody believe that we have that much time left to resolve this??

Has anyone heard how long we would have to wait for the “slashing” to start? Are real reductions “backloaded”, so the current congress critters will have time to get their time in and retire before the rubber hits the road on Ryan’s plan? Or, if passed, would there be deep reductions starting next year?

If you will notice the GOP never can quite bring itself to actually cut the size of government. They love the big government and the regulatory power over us as much as the Dems. They will never close up these unecessary agencies. I have been waiting to give them the benefit of the doubt but its not going to happen.

But they will cut your Soc Sec and your Medicare and all your tax breaks. Count on it.

Did the man say slash or did he say cut or perhaps reduce

Not much point in getting your time in to retire, when the money they pay you with will be nothing more than kindling. Umless of course they write a law, in which ex-government employees get paid in gold, silver and platinum.

Look at the comments/replies on this thread and imagine how hopeless it is to be Paul Ryan trying to address this crisis. I would have thought Freepers would be allies in this -- but no, they call Ryan a socialist! And I assume that's serious.

Shame on us if we don't have the principles to support the good fight he is trying to take on. This has been building for 90 years; it can't be solved in 2, 4, or even 10. But Ryan is showing us all a Roadmap to restoring our America.

Reagan was a leader and a visionary, but he wasn't able to slow the growth of government spending and entitlements. Now that job has fallen to Paul Ryan and the Republican House caucus -- hopefully this becomes the platform that Republican presidential candidates will rally around and get elected on, so that we can get on with the business of putting this vision into place and actually start making progress toward that goal.

In the meantime, Freepers, I would suggest getting behind this or shut the blank up.
