WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama is getting ready to make one of Washington's worst kept secrets official: He wants a second term.
Democratic officials familiar with the plan say Obama will file 2012 campaign papers with the Federal Election Commission as early as this coming week.
It's a long-anticipated but formal step that will allow him to start raising money for the campaign, which will be based in Chicago.
The fundraising effort has begun. Obama raised $1.5 million at a Democratic fundraiser in New York City this past week and he'll headline events in the coming weeks in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Obama raised an eye-catching $750 million for his 2008 campaign.
The officials asked not to be identified in order to speak before the re-election papers are filed.

Thank you for the info. I have a feeling that Obama is going to be the new LBJ.
Not that Obama cares about the Constitution, but trying to ignore the clear language of the amendment may be too much even for a lot of Democrats. It isn't likely that the Democrats after 2012 would have the votes in Congress and in the state legislatures to ram through a repeal of the 22nd amendment.
Ironic considering Bill Clinton complained about the 22nd amdendment.
Any people who would vote for him now must have something wrong with them.
Your words are marked, BobL. Your words are marked. But, for the sake of all of mankind, they sure as h*ll better be true!
The money post of the week! Brilliantly simple yet says it all!
The GOP turned its back on Calvin Coolidge in 1928 and nominated Herbert Hover, Coolidge's Secretary of Commerce. That, of course, led to the election of FDR, America's First Communist President in 1932. By 1933 it was illegal for American Citizens to own gold...
Coolidge made a clear statement of his intentions -- I do not choose to run for president in 1928. (August 2, 1927).
In the modern era, which I guess started with Theodore Roosevelt, it's been vice presidents who ascended to the presidency who were denied the nomination: Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson.
If they'd been elected, they'd have served longer than eight years, since they'd already served their predecessor's uncompleted term and a four year term of their own.
It's like there's a time clock running that only allows a president at most eight years, though Korea and Vietnam were the main reasons why Truman and Johnson were rejected.
You might add Theodore Roosevelt, who left office, and tried unsuccessfully to win his party's nomination four years later.
Since 1900 presidents who got their party's nomination were rejected: Taft, Hoover, Ford, Carter, and Bush Sr. You could also add TR here as well, since he ran on a third party ticket after losing the Republican nomination and lost.
Since even Jimmy Carter got his party's nomination, I'd say it's there for Obama if he wants it. Four years on the party still has the hunger. After that, boredom and frustration set in.

Thanks, but I don’t know if I want them to be true. Hillary would be MUCH TOUGHER to beat than Obama in 2012. People actually respect her (I know, sickening, but that is the case). Obama, no, not anymore. He was an unqualified clown that got in there and the sooner he’s dispatched, the better.
Similar to what happened in Connecticut last year. Chris Dodd knew he was damaged, so he didn’t run again. The Dem who did run had a nice clean slate, and was able to win.
Not good for us...but politics is politics.
“It must be battle fatigue but, I sometimes think, that the witch Hillary would have made a better president than this nightmare... “
It is battle fatigue, because they’re virtually identical when it comes to policy and the ability to misjudge the role of America in the world.
But they’re counting on it...maybe not from you, but from millions of fence sitters that think Hillary may well have been a better president...so why not give her a chance?
The number will go down while the actual Unemployed increase exponentially....What is 5 is 2 what is 2 is 1 and what is 1 is NOTHING.....Now I am going to repeat that for those of you on drugs....
Trust me on this comrade... I shall never vote for a Liberal. Ever!
“He wants a second term. “
In America, you can want anything you want.
The United States has not been utterly destroyed yet, so obviously he feels his job is not yet done.
If you don’t succeed in toppling the mightiest country in the world in 4 short years, try, try another 4.
You’re certainly not the target - it’s the people that voted for Obama and now realize that was a mistake. Their plan, then, is to give them Hillary in 2012.
I don’t care if Obama runs for re-election. I just hope that everyone here on Freerepublic along with the Patriots in this country embarrass this man next November. I hope he loses this election so badly that he’ll remove himself from politics one and for all.
I just don’t get why people “like” this guy! And he’s not eloquent imo. His speaking is clipped, arrogant sounding and somewhat monotone.
Why couldn’t a conservative or independent get behind Donald Trump or Herman Cain? I don’t care much for Huckabee but a lot of people like him as well. I’ll admit, I don’t want to think in terms of doom and gloom when it comes to the 21012 election. My mental health depends on the defeat of Obama:) and we need our base to be energized not defeated.
