WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jim Brady, President Ronald Reagan's smooth-talking press secretary, hasn't stopped speaking his mind, forcefully and poignantly, and that was clear Wednesday on the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt that paralyzed him.

"I wouldn't be here in this damn wheelchair if we had common-sense legislation," he said Wednesday at a Capitol Hill news conference, joined by his wife, Sarah, and lawmakers in calling for gun control legislation.

One strange face is that Hinkley is a distant cousin of Ronald Reagan.

"I wouldn't be here in this damn wheelchair if we had common-sense legislation,"

Mr. Brady, I am very sorry for your situation, but it is more likely that you would still be there in the damn wheelchair because Hinckley would have gotten a gun illegally.

"I wouldn't be here in this damn wheelchair if we had common-sense legislation,"

This kind of thinking is like saying thermometers cause heat.

We have common sense legislation created to control drunk driving, yet thousands are killed and maimed every year.

I will cut Jim Brady some slack because he suffered serious brain damage. His wife is another story.

Better yet, we have common sense legislation against shooting people and it still happened.

There it is again, that phrase "Common Sense Gun Control" that the control freaks want to cram down the throats of the peasants.

The only good gun control is 10 of 10 in the X ring.

Mr Brady, I’m sorry you were shot and suffer so... however it was a mentally unbalanced man who shot you, not an everyday guy who works all day and has a family at home to protect. Taking guns away from that guy won’t prevent a criminal or an unbalanced man from obtaining one illegally.

I recall in the late 90s when the Clinton regime was going all-out on gun control, and how Brady was referred to as the "push toy". Seems he only hops in the wheelchair for photo ops, or so it was noted at the time.

We must note how the proponents for civilian disarmament typically have to resort to the lie, the deception, and the closed-door deal at midnight to accomplish their goals.

By their deeds shall you know them...

"I wouldn't be here in this damn wheelchair if we had common-sense legislation"

If the legislation that we have right now had been enforced, the sad case of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords could have been avoided. How will passing even more laws that can be broken change anything?

I'm sorry for what happened to him but him and his wife are now responsible, through their idiotic legislation, for more innocents dying or going to jail.

Nothing like having your bills paid for by being a shill for the Commie gun-grabbers.

Constitution? Freedom? Logic? Who cares as long as he gets his 15 minutes of fame and payola.

It was already illegal to have a handgun in DC when he got shot. In fact DC had some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. Those laws did not stop Hinckley. Gun control laws do not stop criminals and Brady is an idiot for believeing they will.
